Book The Theory of Electricity and Magnetism

Download or read book The Theory of Electricity and Magnetism written by Arthur Gordon Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Electricity and Magnetism: Being Lectures on Mathematical Physics The theoretical writings of Hertz, Heaviside, Cohn and others have resulted in the systematization of Maxwell's theory and have made possible improvements in the mode of its presentation and nomenclature not contemplated by him. The extremely important and original contributions of Mr Oliver Heaviside are unfortunately but little adapted to the use of the student on account of their very voluminous character as a whole, as well as of an extreme conciseness of expression in individual parts. The few brilliant chapters on theoretical matters left by Hertz are hardly by way of exposition, but rather of a summing up of the conclusions of the theory. It has been my aim in the preparation of this volume to present to the student the results of the theory as it stands today after the labors of Faraday, Maxwell, Helmholtz, Hertz and Heaviside. Here it may be convenient to state what I consider to be the essentials of Maxwell's theory as distinguished from the old theories. To this question may very well be made the answer of Hertz: "Maxwell's theory is Maxwell's system of equations." But to specify more fully the points of difference, they are in the opinion of the writer: 1°. The localization of the energy in the medium. 2°. The magnetic action of displacement currents. While starting from the standpoint of Energy, I have not thought it advisable to abolish the usual terms repugnant to so many writers, who assuming the attitude of Maxwellians par excellence, deny the existence of Electricity. Book Advanced Electromagnetism Foundations Theory And Applications

Download or read book Advanced Electromagnetism Foundations Theory And Applications written by Terence William Barrett and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-11-16 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Electromagnetism: Foundations, Theory and Applications treats what is conventionally called electromagnetism or Maxwell's theory within the context of gauge theory or Yang-Mills theory. A major theme of this book is that fields are not stand-alone entities but are defined by their boundary conditions. The book has practical relevance to efficient antenna design, the understanding of forces and stresses in high energy pulses, ring laser gyros, high speed computer logic elements, efficient transfer of power, parametric conversion, and many other devices and systems. Conventional electromagnetism is shown to be an underdeveloped, rather than a completely developed, field of endeavor, with major challenges in development still to be met.

Book Mathematical Methods of Electromagnetic Theory

Download or read book Mathematical Methods of Electromagnetic Theory written by Kurt O. Friedrichs and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a mathematically precise but intuitive introduction to classical electromagnetic theory and wave propagation, with a brief introduction to special relativity. While written in a distinctive, modern style, Friedrichs manages to convey the physical intuition and 19th century basis of the equations, with an emphasis on conservation laws. Particularly striking features of the book include: (a) a mathematically rigorous derivation of the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter, (b) a straightforward explanation of how to use variational principles to solve problems in electro- and magnetostatics, and (c) a thorough discussion of the central importance of the conservation of charge. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate students in mathematics and physics with a background in advanced calculus and linear algebra, as well as mechanics and electromagnetics at an undergraduate level. Apart from minor corrections to the text, the notation was updated in this edition to follow the conventions of modern vector calculus. Titles in this series are co-published with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
