Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deuteron induced reactions serve as surrogates for neutron capture into compound states. Al- though these reactions are of great applicability, no theoretical efforts have been invested in this direction over the last decade. The goal of this work is to establish on firm grounds a theory for deuteron in-duced neutron capture reactions. This includes formulating elastic and inelastic breakup in a consistent manner. We describe this process both in post and prior form distorted wave Born approximation following previous works and discuss the differences in the formulation. While the convergence issues arising in the post formulation can be overcome in the prior formulation, in this case one still needs to take into account additional terms due to non-orthogonality. We apply our method to the 53Nb(d, p)X at Ed =15 MeV and 25 MeV, and are able to obtain a good description of the data. We look at the various partial wave contributions, as well as elastic versus inelastic contributions. We also connect our formulation with transfer to neutron bound states. In conclusion, our calculations demonstrate that the non-orthogonality term arising in the prior formulation is significant and is at the heart of the long-standing controversy between the post and the prior formulations of the theory. We also show that the cross sections for these reactions are angular momentum dependent and therefore the commonly used Weisskopf limit is inadequate. Finally we make important predictions for the relative contributions of elastic breakup and non-elastic breakup, and call for elastic breakup measurements to further constrain our model.

Book Deuteron Induced Reactions on superscript 28 Si

Download or read book Deuteron Induced Reactions on superscript 28 Si written by David Preston Gurd and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absolute cross-sections for the elastic scattering reaction [superscript 28]Si(d,d)[superscript 28]Si have been measured from 25° to 140° at seven energies in the range E[subscript d] = 4.74 MeV to E[subscript d] = 5.26 MeV. The distribution of protons from the ln = 0 reaction [superscript 28]Si(d,p)[superscript 29]Si[subscript gs] and the ln = 2 reactions [superscript 28]Si(d,p)[superscript 29]Si* 1.28 and 2.03 has been obtained at E[subscript d] = 5.0 MeV, as well as the polarization of the ground state proton group. This data has been compared with predictions of D. W. B. A. theory using several deuteron optical model parameter sets obtained by fitting the elastic distributions. The theory is unable to explain the polarization data, but some of the deuteron potentials provide fair agreement with the measured stripping distributions. Spectroscopic Factors have been extracted, and compared with predictions of the Nilsson Model for [superscript 29]Si.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last twenty years have witnessed an enormous development of nuclear physics. A large number of data have accumulated and many experimental facts are known. As the experimental techniques have achieved greater and greater perfection, the theoretical analysis and interpretation of these data have become correspondingly more accurate and detailed. The development of nuclear physics has depended on the development of physics as a whole. While there were interesting speculations about nuclear constitution as early as 1922, it was impossible to make any quantitative theory of even the simplest nucleus until the discovery of quantum mechanics on the one hand, and the development of experimental methods sufficiently sensitive to detect the presence of a neutral particle (the neutron) on the other hand. The further development of our understanding of the nucleus has depended, and still depends, on the development of ever more powerful experimental techniques for measuring nuclear properties and more powerful theoretical techniques for correlating these properties. Practically every "simple," "reasonable," and "plausible" assumption made in theoretical nuclear physics has turned out to be in need of refinement; and the numerous attempts to derive nuclear forces and the properties of nuclei from a more" fundamental" approach than the analysis of the data have proved unsuccessful so far. Nuclear physics is by no means a finished edifice.

Book Polarization Theory of Nuclear Reactions

Download or read book Polarization Theory of Nuclear Reactions written by Qing-Biao Shen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with a modern and comprehensive overview of nuclear polarization theory. The understanding of polarization phenomena greatly enriches data obtained from scattering and nuclear reactions by providing information on the interaction that can change spin orientation as well as important verification data for the study of nuclear structures and reaction mechanisms. The author methodically derives the polarization theory of nuclear reactions for various types of elastic scattering and two-body direct reactions between particles of different spin and unpolarized target nuclei with arbitrary spin, as well as the reactions between two polarized light particles and the polarization theory for photon beams. In addition, the polarization theories of relativistic nuclear reactions are rigorously covered in great scope and detail. A chapter on polarized particle transport theory presents the Monte-Carlo method for describing the transport of polarized particles and formalizes the polarized particle transport equation. Here, the author also illustrates a novel and concrete scheme for establishing a polarization nuclear database. Nuclear polarization is important not only for microscopic nuclear structure and reaction studies but also for nuclear engineering, applied nuclear physics, and medical physics. With the development of radioactive beam facilities and, on the theoretical side, the development of consistent microscopic nuclear reaction and structure theories, this book on the polarization theory of nuclear reactions serves as a timely source of reference for students and researchers alike.
