Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Color: In Its Relation to Art and Art-Industry There is one point, however, which I should here like to dwell upon somewhat more at length, i. E. The choice of terms for the designation of some of the colors. Peculiar difficulties had to be overcome in this respect, even in the German language, since several of the names, which are familiar to the physicist, are entirely unknown to the artist, while dyers and weavers employ still other designations, which are again different from those used by either of the two classes first named. I therefore resolved to depart from the usages of physical terminology in a few instances in which this terminology would be likely to give rise to decided misunderstandings, and I cannot refrain from expressing a strong hope, that these changes may be sanctioned and adopted by my colleagues in the profession. It seems well, at all events, to call attention to these changes here, and to give a concise statement of the reasons which induced them. Book Color Theory and Its Application in Art and Design

Download or read book Color Theory and Its Application in Art and Design written by George A. Agoston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim in this introductory text is to present a comprehensible discussion of certain technical topics and recent developments in color science that I believe are of real interest to artists and designers. I treat a number of applications of this knowledge, for example in selection and use of colorants (pigments and dyes) and light. Early in the book I discuss what color is and what its characteristics are. This is followed by a chapter on pertinent aspects of light, light as the stimulus that causes the perception of color. Then the subject of the colors of opaque and transparent, nonfluorescent and fluorescent materials is taken up. There are sections on color matching, color mixture, and color primaries. Chapter 6 introduces the basic ideas that underlie the universal method (CIE) of color specification. Later chapters show how these ideas have been extended to serve other purposes such as systematic color naming, de termining complementary colors, mixing colored lights, and demonstrating the limitations of color gamuts of colorants. The Munsell and the Ostwald color systems and the Natural Colour System (Sweden) are explained, and the new Uniform Color Scales (Optical Society of America) are described. Color specification itself is a broad topic. The information presented here is relevant in art and design, for those who work with pigments and dyes or with products that contain them, such as paints, printing inks, plastics, glasses, mosaic tesserae, etc.

Book Color Facture Art and Design

Download or read book Color Facture Art and Design written by Iona Singh and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color, Facture, Art and Design seeks to understand art and design from the aspect of materials, construction and the senses. It contends that this element is omitted from art and design theory as a product of the division of labour and alienation as it operates within the realms of theory and art history. It investigates the "beauty" of art based on the somatic "magic" of the physical body and its relationship to nature, arguing that the sensual affect of expert artistic combinations of art materials in some paintings exploits a bridge between the intricacies of human sentience and the external world. Art is thus more accurately located next to the sciences of language, mathematics, physiology and psychoanalysis. As the "pure mathematics" of the discipline, this materialist definition of fine-art develops guidelines for architecture, design, cultural-studies and ultimately social change. ,

Book The Road to Parnassus Artist Strategies in Contemporary Art Premium Color

Download or read book The Road to Parnassus Artist Strategies in Contemporary Art Premium Color written by Diego Mantoan and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can one become a successful artist? Where should one start a career in the art world? What are useful strategies to achieve recognition in the art system? Such questions hoard in students' minds ever since entering art school and they probably chase every kind of art professional who is at an early career stage. “The Road to Parnassus” tries to understand what makes a good start in today's art world, who are influential players in the field and which strategies might apply. The swift career ascension of Glasgow artist Douglas Gordon – one of today's leading visual artists – and of the broader YBA generation that rose into worldwide prominence in the 1990s – Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas among the best known – serves as a convenient case to analyse contemporary artist strategies. This book takes a multidisciplinary approach – spanning from traditional art history, to sociology and economics – pursuing the reconstruction of the field of forces in art as intended by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Compared to previous publications on art system dynamics, such as Thompson's “The $12 Million Stuffed Shark”, this book offers an enhanced understanding of the factors that allow a young artist to enter the arena of contemporary art. The present research should help uncover the art system logic – which appears enigmatic to non-experts – revealing that artists are aware they need to consider global trends, beat competitors and meet the demands of dealers, collectors, curators and museums. This book furthers existing contributions on the YBAs (for example Stallabrass' “High Art Lite”), offering innovative conclusions on recent British art, such as on the duality between London and Glasgow, the gender opposition among emerging artists and the predominance of resourceful authors.

Book Color Harmonies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Augusto Garau
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1993-05
  • ISBN : 9780226281964
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Color Harmonies written by Augusto Garau and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because theories of visual perception have traditionally concentrated on form, artists have generally dealt with the problem of color through their own observation and intuition. In Color Harmonies, Augusto Garau systematically investigates the role of both color and form in visual perception and presents an original theory of the aesthetic relations among colors. Garau, a painter who teaches the psychology of form, pays particular attention to the way colors behave when organized in patterns. His theory of color combination addresses two principal compositional elements: the relations between figure and ground and the phenomenon of transparency. Garau meticulously analyzes the use of color in paintings by masters such as Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse to show how his theory applies to actual works of art. Containing many full-color examples, his introduction to the workings of color relations is of great practical use to art historians and critics, artists, interior decorators, fashion and set designers, and anyone who works with color to display information or convey emotions. "In an area of the psychology of art where reliable guidance is still so hard to come by, [Garau's] well-supported contributions to the theory of color composition ought to be welcomed by practitioners and scholars alike."—from the Foreword by Rudolf Arnheim

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and updated third edition offers students and artists valuable insights into traditional color theory and its practical application using todayʼs cutting-edge technology. The text is lavishly illustrated, stressing issues of contemporary color use and examining how today’s artists and designers are using color in a multitude of mediums in their work. It is the only book that has parity between the male and female artists and designers represented, while containing more multicultural and global examples of art and design than any other text. This book begins with how we see color and its biological basis, progressing to the various theories about color and delving into the psychological meaning of color and its use. There are individual chapters on color use in art and design, as well as global and multicultural color use. One chapter investigates cross cultural life events such as marriages and funerals, while examining the six major religions’ conceptual and psychological underpinnings of color use. The final chapter explores the future of color. Contemporary Color is the ideal text for color theory courses, but also for beginning art and design students, no matter what their future major discipline or emphasis may be. It provides the foundation on which to build their career and develop their own personal artistic voice and vision.
