Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outlines of AEsthetic Theory This little work contains the chief ideas gathered together for a course of lectures on the theory and history of aesthetics given at Harvard College from 1892 to 1895. The only originality I can claim is that which may result from the attempt to put to gether the scattered commonplaces of criticism into a system, under the inspiration of a naturalistic psychology. I have studied sincerity rather than novelty, and if any subject, as for instance the excellence of tragedy, is presented in a new light, the change consists only in the stricter application to a complex subject of the principles acknowledged to obtain in our simple judgments. My effort throughout has been to recall those fundamental aesthetic feelings the orderly extension of which yields sanity of judgment and distinction of taste. The influences under which the book has been written are rather too general and pervasive to admit of specification; yet the student of philosophy will not fail to perceive how much I owe to writers, both living and dead, to whom no honour could be added by my acknowledgments. I have usually omitted any reference to them in foot-notes or in the text, in order that the air of controversy might be avoided, and the reader might be enabled to compare what is said more directly with the reality of his own experience. Book Aesthetics Or the Science of Beauty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Aesthetics Or the Science of Beauty Classic Reprint written by John Bascom and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aesthetics, or the Science of Beauty The following Lectures were written with a desire to supply the want of an exclusive and compact treatise on the principles of taste. So many principles have been established in the department of beauty, so much of the mind's action in this direction is understood, as to entitle the subject to distinct consideration; and, at the risk of some offence, we have ventured to style our work AEsthetics; or, The Science of Beauty. It has been our aim to combine and present in a systematic form those facts and principles which constitute the department of taste, and, as far as may be, to make good its claim to the rank of a distinct science. In so doing, we have striven to render a service to the general reader, and yet more to this branch of instruction. The present edition is corrected and enlarged as the result of further thought, and new opportunities of observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Beauty: As Developed in Nature and Applied in ArtMY theory of beauty in form and colour being now admitted by the best authorities to be based on truth, I have of late been often asked, by those who wished to become acquainted with its nature, and the manner of its being applied in art, which of my publications I would recommend for their perusal. This question I have always found difficulty in answering; for although the law upon which my theory is based is characterised by unity, yet the subjects in which it is applied, and the modes of its application, are equally characterised by variety, and consequently occupy several volumes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He also shows how Greek notions of art and beauty are not merely primitive steps in the advance to modern ideas but have a direct relevance to modern critical controversies.

In this volume we have delved deeply into the matter and endeavored to make perfectly plain the rock upon which the structure of true and lasting beauty must be erected. In developing our aim, we have not lost sight of the practical, nor have we placed it beyond the power and circumstances of the children of toil to become as beautiful and lovely as those who know no want. To teach all the pathway lead ing to the acquirement of beauty has been our main object, and we feel we have accomplished a purpose not hitherto attained. The reader should understand from the beginning that the best authorities agree in the belief that there is no method whereby a woman may gain, preserve, or regain beauty solely from the outside While there are certain things which will enhance the physical charms, there must always be a foundation of sound physical condition underlying the outside treatment and supporting it. All beauty comes from within, says a well-known French writer, and this axiom is heartily agreed to by the present writer.
