Book Theory and Practice of Commercial Policy

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Commercial Policy written by Anne O. Krueger and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the evolution of thought regarding protectionist trade policies in developed and in developing countries is examined and contrasted. In the developing countries distrust of markets and a belief in the infant industry argument led to highly protectionist trade regimes. The consequences were so negative that thinking about interventions has changed markedly. The lessons from this experience for the policy implications of the "new trade theory" are then examined.

Book Public Finance in Theory and Practice Second edition

Download or read book Public Finance in Theory and Practice Second edition written by Holley H. Ulbrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of the last decade have challenged the contemporary neo-classical synthesis in all branches of economics, but particularly public finance. The most notable feature of the 2nd edition of Public Finance in Theory and Practice is the infusion of behavioral economics throughout the text, with an end of chapter question inviting the student to apply a behavioral lens to some question or issue. There continues to be an emphasis on the importance of the institutional context, drawing on examples from many countries and emphasizing the role of lower level governments in a federal system. The first five chapters establish this context by reviewing the role of government in a market system, the description of government structure from an economic perspective, the basic data about revenue and expenditures, the elements of public choice, and the distributional role of government. The book has been substantially reorganized to put more emphasis on public expenditure. Expanded treatment of public goods includes common property resources and congestible or club goods. Expanded discussion of budgeting and cost-benefit analysis provides some practical application of the theory. Updated discussions of social security, public education and health care address these three major contemporary public finance issues. The traditional emphasis on revenue (taxes, fees and grants) has been retained but follows rather than precedes the discussion of expenditures.

Book Money Trade and Competition

Download or read book Money Trade and Competition written by Herbert Giersch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 1, 1990, Egon Sohmen would have reached the age of 60 had he not suffered from a fatal illness. It demanded his death at the early age of 46. If he were still with us, he would playa prominent role in the current debate on monetary arrangements and on allocation theory, perhaps in cluding environmental issues and urban economics. His contributions are well remembered by his colleagues and friends, by his former students, and by many in the economics profession on both sides of the Atlantic. In extrapolating his great achievements as a scholar and teacher beyond the time of his death, one is inclined to suppose that Egon Sohmen's name would figure high on many a list of candidates for honors and awards in the field of international economics. For the reconstruction of economics in the German language area Egon Sohmen was invaluable. Born in Linz (Austria), he studied in Vienna at the Business School (Hochschule fUr Welthandel, now Wirtscha!tsuniversitiit), then went to the US as a Fulbright scholar (1953), returned to Europe to take his doctorate in Tiibingen, Germany, (1954) and crossed the Atlantic again to teach at MIT (1955-58) where he obtained a Ph. D. (1958) under Charlie Kindleberger. He might have stayed permanently in the US, con tinuing a career that he started as Assistant Professor at Yale University (1958-61), if the US visa provisions had been applied in a more liberal fashion.

Book Trading Blocs

Download or read book Trading Blocs written by Jagdish N. Bhagwati and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent proliferation of free trade areas and customs unions in the world trading system has led to a revival of interest in the economic analysis of Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs). The principal theoretical question of the 1950s and 1960s (Viner) was whether PTAs encourage or discourage the worldwide nondiscriminatory freeing of trade. The essays in this volume present the central contributions to the analytical approaches developed to examine these questions. -- Provided by publisher.

Book The Theory of Trade Policy Reform

Download or read book The Theory of Trade Policy Reform written by Carsten Kowalczyk and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While its treatment of the effects of policy changes on key economic indicators is academic, the literature on theory of trade policy reform "is motivated by concrete policy challenges ... and has informed policy." Kowalczyk (international economics, Tufts U.) introduces two types of reform (concertina and radial), the main policy and analytic issues, and how these 32 articles contribute to their understanding. Reprinted from economic journals and books from 1953-94, they address eight themes: early contributions to the theory of reform; welfare effects of tax and price changes; results of reform and national welfare; world welfare and trade reform; coalitions, welfare, and trade reform; quotas, tariffs, and reform; reform of government production and revenue; and reform in multi-household economies. Book The Free Trade Adventure

Download or read book The Free Trade Adventure written by Graham Dunkley and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2000-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free trade lies at the heart of the new era of globalization. This is a review of the history of 20th-century trade agreements, tracing what happened to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) before the USA pushed the world into the Uruguay Round. This renegotiation of the rules of international trade, enshrined in the World Trade Organisation agreements, is now taking free trade much further than ever before. The author examines the benefits and hidden costs of the WTO Agreements, their implications for weaker economies and their likely consequences in terms of environmental protection, labour standards and political sovereignty. Alternatives do exist, he argues, to an over-reliance on free trade. These include managed trade, fair trade and self-reliant trade. He also sets out a series of innovative proposals for reforming the WTO, IMF and World Bank.

Book Handbook of Environmental Economics

Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Economics written by Karl-Goran Maler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists.
