Book The Theory and Practice of Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Mechanics Classic Reprint written by S. E. Slocum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Mechanics A course in theoretical mechanics often lacks the strength and vitality resulting from practical applications, whereas a course in applied mechanics is likely to be so technical and limited in its range as to obscure the meaning and s00pe of the fundamental principles involved. By properly combining theory and practice the efficiency of instruction is greatly increased, and mechanics also becomes a powerful instrument for coordinating mathematics and physics with technology. In this text the aim is to present the fundamental principles of mechanics in such a way as to emphasize their actual significance and relationship, and at the same time make them a matter of intelligent interest to the average student of junior grade in col leges and universities, and in technical and engineering schools. In each article the explanation is given a body by direct applica tion to some practical problem within the range of the student's experience or understanding. The present work was compiled in this way continually during zhe Author's professional career. It was originally not intended for publication, but had grown so large in manuscript as to be inconvenient for the pocket, which circumstance combined with repeated requests to publish it, placed it before the public, first in the year 1854. Since that time-die has travelled in Europe for nearly five years, collecting such information for the Pocket book as to follow up the progress of Engineering professign, and no expense has been spared in attaining that object. Book Text Book of Mechanics Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of Mechanics Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Louis A. Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Mechanics, Vol. 5 Mechanics may conveniently be divided into three parts: mechanics of solids, Of liquids, and of gases. Mechan ics of solids, when ideal, rigid solids only are considered, forms the simplest part of the subject, and this is the part first studied under the title of theoretical mechanics. When rigidity is no longer assumed the study of the mechanics of solids involves the elastic properties of materials. The rational, rigorously developed theory of elasticity is so complicated and leads to results SO unsatisfactory from the practical standpoint that engineering students are (and all students should be) first taught a simplified theory of elasticity known as mechanics of materials where, whenever the rigorous theory leads too far afield, recourse is had to approximations and reasonable assumptions based upon observation and experiment. The study of the mechanics of liquids is divided into hydrostatics and hydrokinetics. In the first division are studied the effects of liquids at rest; in the second liquids in motion. Book Mechanics of Materials Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mechanics of Materials Classic Reprint written by Mansfield Merriman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: An Elementary d104-Book Theoretical and Practical I believe it to be desirable that a student should commence the study of Mechanics With Kinematics and Kinetics, and 'have therefore arranged the book on this plan. At the same time it Will, I hope, be found that the Statics is in great measure independent of the other part of the subject, though at the cost of some repetition. It will be possible therefore for a teacher to take it before the Kinematics. In the Third Part some of the simple experimental laws of Hydrostatics are discussed and explained. The book has grown considerably beyond the limits of my lectures, though it is by no means a complete treatise on Elementary Mechanics still I h0pe it may prove useful as an introduction to the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Mechanics: An Elementary Text-Book In a first course in Theoretical Mechanics the primary object to be gained by the student is a thorough grasp of fundamental princi ples. In most cases it is impossible to go beyond this object in the time available for the course. In the preparation of this text-book, the aim has been to present the fundamental principles in as clear and simple a manner as possible, and to enforce them by a sufficient number of illustrative examples; The examples are for the most part simple applications of the theory presented in the text, many numerical exercises being included. The solution of exercises in volving numerical data forms a part of the work of the student of which the importance should be emphasized. In the desire to cover as much ground as - possible, such work is too apt to be neglected. The mathematical training required for using the book is that usually implied by an elementary knowledge of Differential and Inte gral Calculus. The most essential portions of Part I (statics) may, however, be read without such knowledge. As regards arrangement, the aim has been to observe the order of difficulty of the different topics treated, so far as this was possible without doing violence to the logical relations. This is one reason for placing Statics first, instead of treating it in its strictly logical position as a special case of Kinetics. Part II may, however, be read before Part I, if any teacher should prefer this order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Author : R. Douglas Gregory
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

Download or read book Classical Mechanics written by R. Douglas Gregory and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory's Classical Mechanics is a major new textbook for undergraduates in mathematics and physics. It is a thorough, self-contained and highly readable account of a subject many students find difficult. The author's clear and systematic style promotes a good understanding of the subject: each concept is motivated and illustrated by worked examples, while problem sets provide plenty of practice for understanding and technique. Computer assisted problems, some suitable for projects, are also included. The book is structured to make learning the subject easy; there is a natural progression from core topics to more advanced ones and hard topics are treated with particular care. A theme of the book is the importance of conservation principles. These appear first in vectorial mechanics where they are proved and applied to problem solving. They reappear in analytical mechanics, where they are shown to be related to symmetries of the Lagrangian, culminating in Noether's theorem.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise of Mechanics, Theoretical, Practical, and Descriptive, Vol. 1: Containing the Theory of Statics, Dynamics, Hydrostatics, Hydrodynamics, and Pneumatics It may, probably, be imagined by some, that considering the advantages for that pu rpose, with which my situation at Woolwich furnishes me, I should insert descriptions of the various kinds of machinery used in the artilleny service. This, however, I have not done: chicfly because such descriptions, by Muller and other re spectable authors, are already easily procured in works appropriated exclusively to that important object, and where the accounts are given with far greater eopiousness than they could be in a perform ance where so many other objects are handled.
