Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been educated; and it entered, according to the his usual, of Saturday in the synagogue and he got up to read. The roll of the prophet Isaia was given him; opened it found it the passage. Then it rolled the volume, it delivered it to the attendant and he sat. The brief passage of the Gospel of Luca delineates the correct liturgical practice through which to draw near to the Sacred Writing according to the Jews. A representation that reveals elements and role of the synagogue in relationship to the teachings of Jesus, gone however lost in the routine and in the memory of the Christian churches. A rediscovery and a proposal of renewal of the Christian religion on the base of the Jewish roots, for to find again herself through the gestures accomplished by his founder.

Book The Religion and Worship of the Synagogue

Download or read book The Religion and Worship of the Synagogue written by W. O. E. Oesterley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion and Worship of the Synagogue: An Introduction to the Study of Judaism From the New Testament Period In planning the present volume the writers have endeavoured to keep in view the requirements more especially of Christian readers and students. For long the need of a popular Handbook dealing with Judaism in a comprehensive way, in a manner adequate to the theme and to the attainments of modern research, has been patent. It is becoming more and more widely recognized that in the light of the new knowledge that has resulted from the study of comparative religion, Judaism, particularly in its earlier phases, occupies a position of unique importance, especially for the elucidation of Christian origins. In such a study, it is true, Judaism not only proves illuminating, but is itself illuminated. But it remains unfortunately true that Judaism has not yet come to its rights in this department of knowledge. Too many students seem still to imagine that the serious study of the Jewish Religion can be left on one side altogether. To Christian theologians, whose interests are absorbed in the investigation of the beginnings of Christianity, the study of Judaism as a living whole - as a vital organism with a soul and genius of its own - is also of supreme importance. We feel bound to express our conviction that the failure to appreciate this aspect of the matter has been responsible in the past for much one-sided and defective exegesis of the New Testament. It is true, learned treatises to illustrate particular themes of Christian interest - as, e.g., the various "Lives" of Our Lord - have been written from time to time, and some of these are of great and enduring value in particular ways. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure of Religion: Judaism and Christianity presents a unique approach to understand each religion within its own context by addressing the differences in the ways in which each manifests itself in the world. Because it is frequently the differences in attitudes and behaviors, and not just beliefs, that constitute the major stumbling blocks to improved Jewish-Christian relations today, this book seeks to enhance respect for and appreciation of the other by utilizing a structural approach to both religions.

Book Crossing Boundaries in Early Judaism and Christianity

Download or read book Crossing Boundaries in Early Judaism and Christianity written by Kimberley Stratton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the scholarship of Alan Segal. During his prolific career, Alan published ground-breaking studies that shifted scholarly conversations about Christianity, rabbinic Judaism, Hellenism and Gnosticism. Like the subjects of his research, Alan crossed many boundaries. He understood that religions do not operate in academically defined silos, but in complex societies populated by complicated human beings. Alan’s work engaged with a variety of social-scientific theories that illuminated ancient sources and enabled him to reveal new angles on familiar material. This interdisciplinary approach enabled Alan to propose often controversial theories about Jewish and Christian origins. A new generation of scholars has been nurtured on this approach and the fields of early Judaism and Christianity emerge radically redefined as a result.

Book excerpt: "Within a decade, St. Paul established the Church in the four provinces of Galatia, Macedonia, Achaia and Asia. This informative study focuses on the social background to the Apostle's missionary journeys with comparisons between his methods and those of the modern day. The book divides into five parts; the first examines the social and religious world which the Apostle inhabited in AD 50; the second addresses how St. Paul presented the Christian Gospel and his financial policy of self-support for the newchurches. Here, contrasts are made between St. Paul's financial and missionary principles, which differ alarmingly from those of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The rapidity of the Apostle's appointment of responsible church leaders is sharply contrasted with the slowness of the present in the third part. Part four deals with St. Paul's procedures for authority in churches, where those of the present day fail to address the conscience of the local church. Conclusions are provided in part five andthe clarity and vigour of Allen's style ensures the reader's interest is maintained to the end. 'Many missionaries in later days have received a larger number of converts than St. Paul; [...] but none have so established churches. We have long forgotten that such things could be.' Extract from Chapter One."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this critical point in the history of World Missions, it is imperative for us to take a step back from “business as usual” in our work around the globe and reevaluate the strategies and methods we are implementing. What is working? What isn’t? If we’re honest, there may be more not working than we would care to admit. In this book, written in the early 1900s, Roland Allen invites us to look at the missionary work of the Apostle Paul with fresh eyes and an igniting perspective that is strikingly relevant to the greatest challenges we are facing today in modern missions. He offers a well of insight from the methodology of Paul that will focus and unite us as we draw nearer than ever before to our goal of fulfilling the Great Commission and reaching the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
