Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Hygiene (Notter and Firth) The analysis Of water and air has necessarily been considered in some detail, not only from the chemical but also from the biological point Of view; this latter aspect of the question has been so much developed during recent years as to constitute almost a distinct branch of study. In endeavouring to give explanations of methods for the bacteriological examination of water and air, we have adhered to the principle of advocating only such methods of research as come within the possibilities Of the duties of a Medical Officer of Health, and which, in our hands, have been found to be practically useful. The subjects of Ventilation and Heating have been considered at some length, and advisedly so, because experience has indicated to us that these are matters usually imperfectly treated in the majority of text-books, and are subjects, too, upon which students and others are inadequately informed. The accounts Of Scurvy and the dietetic value of Alcohol are given, with the exception of some minor verbal alterations, in much of the original language of Dr Parkes. Our knowledge upon these matters has been so little changed during recent years that it was felt that very little improvement could be made upon the original statements. Similarly, the chapters upon Exercise and Clothing have been but slightly altered by us. One matter of great difficulty has been the question of Sanitary Law. While fully recognising the importance of every sanitary officer studying the various legislative enactments bearing upon the Public Health in their original form, and the difficulties in the way of either making a legal chapter interesting or profitable reading, we have endeavoured, in the section which deals with sanitary legislation, to overcome these objections and to construct a chapter which may be not only interesting but useful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Hygiene The chapters dealing with foods and beverages have been strengthened by the incorporation of more modern conceptions as to the theory of diets and values of the various food-stuffs. The same idea has dominated the handling of such subjects as habitations, schools, hospitals, drainage, and the disposal of sewage. The chapter dealing with this latter topic has been rewritten, and it is hoped will be found sufficiently Clear both as to theory and practice. The chapter on the disposal of the dead is new, and that on the offensive trades has been extended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hygiene: Specially Intended for Those Studying, for a Diploma in Public Health This little book is an attempt to epitomise the views of accepted authorities and the most recent work in the huge subject of Hygiene. It is really a carefully edited collection of the notes used by the authors for teaching purposes at University College. Those sections dealing with purely practical subjects have been cut down to make room for more theoretical material, and it is hoped in consequence that the manual will prove useful for rapid revision of d.p.h. Examination work. A good many references to literature will be found in the text, and a list of standard books is inserted on p. 389. Grateful acknowledgment is now made for the assistance given us by these works, not only in the somewhat strenuous task of pre paring candidates for the various Public Health Diplomas, but also in the writing of this Synopsis. We are indebted to the publishers for permission to reprint various diagrams from Notter and Firth's Theory and Practice of Hygiene, and Hamer's Manual of Hygiene. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hygiene One of the most remarkable features in the educational move ment of the present day has been the increased effort to diffuse a knowledge of the relations which exist between our health and the air we breathe, the water and food we consume, the soil we tread and the buildings we occupy. Known under the various current names of Sanitary Science, Public Health or Hygiene, this subject involves an acquaintance with such diverse sciences as physics, chemistry, geology, engineering, architecture, meteoro logy, epidemiology, bacteriology and statistics. To these, strictly speaking, may be added the study of the law or those legal enactments which concern the sanitary well-being of communities.
