Book Selling With Color Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selling With Color Classic Reprint written by Faber Birren and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selling With Color This is a book about color and people. It has been written to be of practical benefit to modern business, to assure the effective development of consumer products, merchandising, advertising, packages, displays. Most books on color will be found long on theory and short on practice. This, perhaps, is because color is emotional in its appeal and tends to inspire a personal and subjective viewpoint. Yet while the so-called artistic aspects of color may be elusive, the facts of mass human reaction are otherwise. For color in industry today may be "engineered" with remarkable certainty, once the methods are known and applied with intelligence and care. It is evident that when you pick the right colors you sell a lot of merchandise or influence a lot of people; when you pick the wrong colors you pile up unsold inventories and see the public turn its back. To management this means that color problems must be rightly analyzed and estimated, that customers and markets must be known. To those charged with the details of styling, the creative "hunch" must be supported by a real understanding of human wants and desires. It is the intent of this book to present facts rather than opinions and to set forth principles that have the support of extensive research and sales record. To accomplish this it has been necessary to gather all possible data from the scientific investigator and to study the sales experience of numerous industries. With such evidence at hand the more temperamental aspects of color may be thrown into clearer light and a better and surer control realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Enjoyment and Use of Color In presenting an introduction to the study Of color as used in the arts, this book takes account Of the close rela tion that exists between the laws Of color in physics and the quality Of color tones and combinations in art. It makes use Of the principles Of light and optics as furnishing a sys tematic approach to an otherwise bewildering realm, in sc far as an evident correlation exists between the external physical causes Of color and the subjective aesthetic experi ences. On the basis Of these it presents a progressive series Of experiments with actual colors in order that the studen1 may become familiar by direct personal experience, witl certain typical color effects. A few modifications and com binations Of colors are representative Of nearly all tha commonly occur, so that actual experiment with these fey helps to interpret a wide range. The purpose Of the bool is not primarily to present a new or original theory Of 0010] but to Offer some analyses Of color effects, and to give series Of typical and interpretative experiments, togethe with references to examples in nature and art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Color The harmony of color is a visible expression of one's mental joy. In music it is an established fact that certain notes used in combination produce harmonious sounds. The moment that more than one note is struck, there is danger of discord, and when ten notes resound to the touch of the player, they must be the right notes, or the sounds jar upon the sensibilities. Book Color and Meaning

Download or read book Color and Meaning written by Marcia B. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent restoration campaigns, particularly to the Sistine Chapel, have focused attention on the importance of colour in our experience of paintings, but until recently it has been neglected by art historians. The author believes that the work of art can only be fully appreciated when it is regarded as the product of both the artist's hand and mind. This study utilizes the traditional sources, such as contemporary theoretical writings and iconographical analysis, but in addition draws on the scientific findings of the conservation laboratories. This is a new body of data assembled in large part since World War II, which art historians are only beginning to exploit to fill out the history of technique. Rather than writing merely a history of technique, however, the author has integrated this material with traditional approaches to cultural history. She undertakes to examine twenty major paintings of the period from Giotto to Tintoretto to elucidate how colour and technique contribute to their meaning. She gives us then, the first modern consideration of Renaissance paintings both as physical objects and as monuments of cultural history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Color Study: A Manual for Teachers and Students The public-school teacher should not attempt to present color theories to primary or grammar-school pupils, but she will not be able to present the subject in a simple and interest ing manner if she does not possess general information beyond the facts she may state to her pupils. The first part of this book briefly explains some of the most important facts relating to color, which will assist teachers to awaken in their pupils the idea that Nature's colors are always changing. It is not claimed that the work here suggested for the public schools is the best possible course, but only that it forms a good basis for experiments, which will lead to more satisfactory results in color work. Those who wish more than the brief outline of the two lead ing color theories given here, should consult Rood's Modern Chromatics, The Theory of Color, by von Bezold, and George Field's works on color.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Color Problems: A Practical Manual for the Lay Student of Color From a scientific standpoint admirable works on color have been written, but they demand more time and study than many can give to them, and are too theoretical to be easily understood; while those written from an artistic standpoint may be useful to those who paint pictures but are not of much benefit to larger classes of people who are artists in other occupations. Painters of pictures must study color as well as lines and composition; but a better understanding of color would also be of great value to decorators, designers, lithographers, florists, dressmakers, and milliners; women in their dress and home decoration, and many others. For such, to combine the essential results of the scientific and artistic study of color in a concise, practical manual, and to classify the study of color in individual eyes, in light, in history and in nature, has been the aim of the author of this book.
