Book excerpt: The Theory and Policy of Labour Protection is a classic work of labor economics that explores the role of government in protecting workers and regulating labor markets. Schäffle argues that government intervention is necessary to mitigate the negative effects of economic inequality and to ensure that workers are treated fairly and with dignity. This book is an important contribution to the development of labor policy in Europe and remains relevant to contemporary debates about labor rights and social justice. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Policy of Labour Protection His plea for more international exchange of Opinions and international uniformity of practice is one which must be echoed by all who have the cause of Labour at heart. To that larger sense of brotherhood which ex tends beyond the bounds Of country we must look for the accomplishment of the Social Revolution which is surely on the way. On a task SO large, and involving such far reaching issues to the progress of the world, the nations must take hands and step together if the results are to be of permanent value. The paralyzing dread of war, the competition of foreign workmen, the familiar Capitalist weapon that trade will leave the country if the workers' claims are conceded all these dangers in the way can only be met by the drawing closer of interna tichal bonds, by the intercommunication of those in all countries who are fired by the new ideals, and are making towards an ordered Social peace out of the chaos Of con flicting and competing energies and interests in which we live. It cannot but be well to be reminded, as Dr. Schaffie reminds us, of the strong expression of Opinion uttered by the Berlin International Labour Conference as to the beneficial results which might be looked for from a series of such gatherings, or to ask ourselves, why should not England be the next to convene a Labour Conference to gather up the experiences of the last few years, which have been so full of movement and agitation in the Labour world, as well as to give to other nations the benefit of the earnest and strenuous investigations, now. Download or read book Theories of Choice written by Stefan Grundmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice is a key concept of our time. It is a foundational mechanism for every legal order in societies that are, politically, constituted as democracies and, economically, built on the market mechanism. Thus, choice can be understood as an atomic structure that grounds core societal processes. In recent years, however, the debate over the right way to theorize choice - for example, as a rational or a behavioral type of decision making - has intensified. This collection provides an in-depth discussion of the promises and perils of specific types of theories of choice. It shows how the selection of a specific theory of choice can make a difference for concrete legal questions, in particular in the regulation of the digital economy or in choosing between market, firm, or network. In its first part, the volume provides an accessible overview of the current debates about rational versus behavioral approaches to theories of choice. The remainder of the book structures the vast landscape of theories of choice along with three main types: individual, collective, and organizational decision making. As theories of choice proliferate and become ever more sophisticated, however, the process of choosing an adequate theory of choice becomes increasingly intricate. This volume addresses this selection problem for the various legal arenas in which individual, organizational, and collective decisions matter. By drawing on economic, technological, political, and legal points of view, the volume shows which theories of choice are at the disposal of the legally relevant decision-maker, and how they can be operationalized for the solution of concrete legal problems. The editors acknowledge the kind support of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for an exploratory conference on the subject of the book.

Book Labour Law and Worker Protection in Developing Countries

Download or read book Labour Law and Worker Protection in Developing Countries written by Tzehainesh Teklè and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new study shifts the focus of scholarly and policy debates on the role of labour law in an era of globalization away from the countries and labour law systems of the North to those of the global South. Placing its analysis within the context of the current scholarly debates on the challenges and future of labour law, the book critically reviews the relevant literature and reflects upon the way in which workers' protection tends to be conceptualized, as well as on the adequacy of the legal categories and tools used to further it, with special attention given to the effectiveness of labour legislation in promoting gender equality. The book argues that, in addition to problems in the application of labour law, there is a mismatch between the realities of the developing world and the social, economic and political underpinnings of labour law. This dates back to its development in post-colonial African and South Asian countries and, to a lesser extent, in Latin American ones. The divergence persists, while new manifestations have appeared due to globalization, leaving a significant number of workers outside the scope of labour law and in need of protection. Against this background, the book explores regulatory and policy response at different governance levels to enhance the scope and application of labour regulation in Latin America, South Asia and southern Africa.
