Book The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737 1832

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737 1832 written by Julia Swindells and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre 1737-1832 provides an essential guide to theatre in Britain between the passing of the Stage Licensing Act in 1737 and the Reform Act of 1832 — a period of drama long neglected but now receiving significant scholarly attention. Written by specialists from a range of disciplines, its forty essays both introduce students and scholars to the key texts and contexts of the Georgian theatre and also push the boundaries of the field, asking questions that will animate the study of drama in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries for years to come. The Handbook gives equal attention to the range of dramatic forms — not just tragedy and comedy, but the likes of melodrama and pantomime — as they developed and overlapped across the period, and to the occasions, communities, and materialities of theatre production. It includes sections on historiography, the censorship and regulation of drama, theatre and the Romantic canon, women and the stage, and the performance of race and empire. In doing so, the Handbook shows the centrality of theatre to Georgian culture and politics, and paints a picture of a stage defined by generic fluidity and experimentation; by networks of performance that spread far beyond London; by professional women who played pivotal roles in every aspect of production; and by its complex mediation of contemporary attitudes of class, race, and gender.

Book excerpt: The Poetic Plays Of Wordsworth, Coleridge And Southey Convey Both Assurance And Anxiety - Balancing And Counterpointing Each Other And The Object Of The Present Study Is To Show How This Balancing And Counter-Pointing Enrich The Texture Of Their Plays. Truly, Their Creative Energy Was Considerably Cramped By The Condi¬Tions Prevailing In The Contemporary Theatre, And It Is Also True That They Show An Inadequate Grasp Of Dramatic Art And Dramatic Dialogue; But What Is Remarkable In Their Dramatic Works Is Their Capacity To Seize And Analyse The Spiritual Dilemma Of The Age; Their Persistent Moral Ardour Exposes The Ailments And Iniquities Afflicting The Social Order And Also Questions And Scrutinizes The Possible Modes Of Freedom. In Fact, This Is Mainly A Study Of The Moral Concerns In The Plays Of The Three Elder English Romantic Poets Their Anxiety About The Mystery And Potency Of Evil And How To Com¬Bat It, The Issues Of Ends And Means That Have Disturbed The Sensitive Rebels Throughout Ages. The Embivalent Poetical Characters, Their Gravitation Towards Drama, Struggle For Stage Success, The Contem¬Porary Theatrical Condition, The Un-Realized Projects, The Dramatic And Stylistic Qualities, Literary Issues, Etc. Book British Romantic Drama

  • Author : Terence Allan Hoagwood
  • Publisher : Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780838637432
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book British Romantic Drama written by Terence Allan Hoagwood and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume attempts a systematic explanation of various dimensions of Romantic drama by foregrounding both the theoretical and practical questions bearing on Romantic drama in its historical situation. In this effort, the volume intentionally gravitates toward discussion of lesser-known works of the period, rather than such major dramas as Manfred or Prometheus Unbound. This is because the poetic dramas by Byron and Shelley have already been the subject of many useful historicist investigations, and also because lesser-known works - for instance, the dramas of Scott, Wordsworth's Borderers, and the many revolutionary and counter-revolutionary dramas of the period - provide avenues into historical and ideological issues that cannot be adequately addressed by exclusive attention to dramas long recognized as canonical.

Book The Poems of Shelley Volume Five

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Five written by Carlene Adamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was one of the major poets of the English Romantic period. This is the fifth volume of a six-volume edition of The Poems of Shelley, which aims to present all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between late summer 1821 and late January 1822. They include Hellas, a lyrical drama written in support of the Greek War of Independence, composed in September–November 1821 and published in February–March 1822, his unfinished tragedy Charles the First which he had been planning for several years, as well as important shorter poems such as ‘The Indian Girl’s Song’, ‘Autumn: a Dirge’ and his ‘Epitaph’ for John Keats. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. Now completed, this is the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

Book The Romantic Theatre

Download or read book The Romantic Theatre written by Richard Allen Cave and published by Colin Smythe. This book was released on 1986 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was first delivered as a series of lectures in Rome arranged under the auspices of the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association and the British Council. The aim was very much to interpret the drama created by the English Romantic poets from the perspective of the modern theatrical tradition. The four essays included here investigate the relationship between the Romantics and the theatre of their own time, assess the considerable body of dramatic works composed by Byron and Shelley, and explore the history of plays by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley and Byron in performance on the British stage. All argue that, though the Romantic poets were out of sympathy with the theatre of their day, they wrote forms of drama that to a considerable degree anticipate the theatre of the present century.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Drama written by Jeffrey N. Cox and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-02-05 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London theatres arguably were the central cultural institutions in England during the Romantic period, and certainly were arenas in which key issues of the time were contested. While existing anthologies of Romantic drama have focused almost exclusively on “closet dramas” rarely performed on stage, The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Drama instead provides a broad sampling of works representative of the full range of the drama of the period. It includes the dramatic work of canonical Romantic poets (Samuel Coleridge’s Remorse, Percy Shelley’s The Cenci, and Lord Byron’s Sardanapalus) and important plays by women dramatists (Hannah Cowley’s A Bold Stroke for a Husband, Elizabeth Inchbald’s Every One Has His Fault, and Joanna Baillie’s Orra). It also provides a selection of popular theatrical genres—from melodrama and pantomime to hippodrama and parody—most popular in the period, featuring plays by George Colman the Younger, Thomas John Dibdin, and Matthew Gregory Lewis. In short, this is the most wide-ranging and comprehensive anthology of Romantic drama ever published. The introduction by the editors provides an informative overview of the drama and stage practices of the Romantic Period. The anthology also provides copious supplementary materials, including an Appendix of reviews and contemporary essays on the theater, a Glossary of Actors and Actresses, and a guide to further reading. Each of the ten plays has been fully edited and annotated.

Book Romanticism and Theatrical Experience

Download or read book Romanticism and Theatrical Experience written by Jonathan Mulrooney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together studies in theater history, print culture, and literature, this book offers a new consideration of Romantic-period writing in Britain. Recovering a wide range of theatrical criticism from newspapers and periodicals, some of it overlooked since its original publication in Regency London, Jonathan Mulrooney explores new contexts for the work of the actor Edmund Kean, essayist William Hazlitt, and poet John Keats. Kean's ongoing presence as a figure in the theatrical news presented readers with a provocative re-imagining of personal subjectivity and a reworking of the British theatrical tradition. Hazlitt and Keats, in turn, imagined the essayist and the poet along similar theatrical lines, reframing Romantic prose and poetics. Taken together, these case studies illustrate not only theater's significance to early nineteenth-century Londoners, but also the importance of theater's textual legacies for our own re-assessment of 'Romanticism' as a historical and cultural phenomenon.
