Book The Text of the Targum of Job

Download or read book The Text of the Targum of Job written by Stec and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centrepiece of this book is a critical edition of the Targum of Job which notes all variants from a total of 14 manuscripts and 2 printed editions. In the introductory section the first two chapters give a description of the principal printed editions and the manuscripts. A chapter on "The Stemma" considers how the various strands of textual tradition relate to each other. There is also a chapter on "Multiple Translation", a phenomenon particularly associated with the Targum of Job whereby more than one translation is often given to whole verses or to individual words and phrases. A final chapter describes in detail the methods underlying the critical edition. This book will provide a useful tool for those working on the textual criticism of the Old Testament and for those interested in the history of Jewish biblical exegesis.

Book The Targums of Job Proverbs and Qohelet

Download or read book The Targums of Job Proverbs and Qohelet written by and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Targum of Job is regarded as one of the most enigmatic of targums. The translation used is based on the Cambridge University MS Ee. 5.9, widely regarded as the most important of known manuscripts. This manuscript is followed as closely as possible, including the marginal readings and the Variant Targum[s] incorporated in the text. The primary aim of the Proverbs Targum is to provide an English translation, none having yet been published. A secondary aim is to give an account of the relationship of this targum to the Hebrew text and the other ancient versions, especially the Syriac. Targum Qohelet is a blend of literal translation and midrashic paraphrase. The purpose is didactic, seeking to convey the meaning which is implicit in the text. Thus Qohelet becomes a vehicle to emphasize the importance of Torah study, repentance, prayer, and charity.

Book Targum and Translation

Download or read book Targum and Translation written by David Shepherd and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly half a century, the Aramaic version of Job found amongst the scrolls at Qumran has been celebrated as the earliest example of that unique genre of Jewish bible translation known to the Rabbis as targum. In this groundbreaking study, the author challenges this assumption by re-evaluating this significant Qumran text in light of other ancient Aramaic versions of Job, including the Peshitta and Targum. After a fresh review of five decades of research on the Qumran text, the author draws on recent work in the study of the ancient Aramaic versions to chart a new course in its exploration. While both similarities and differences of approach among the respective Aramaic translators are illuminated by a series of examples drawn directly from the texts, the rigorous scrutiny of each version's re-presentation of its source text provides a firm basis for a reassessment of the relationship between the Qumran Aramaic version of Job and its Syriac and Targumic counterparts. By situating the Qumran version within the broader context of other ancient Aramaic versions, the author makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Aramaic idiom and style in the time of the Second Temple. More importantly, however, he offers a radical revision of the Aramaic version of Job's classification and a new and innovative perspective on its place in the panoply of ancient bible versions originating in this crucial period.

Book excerpt: "Tg1 has unfortunately come down to us in a rather fragmentary state. The text is made up of one roll 109 x 4-6cm in size, 27 large fragments of various sizes, and a number of small fragments containing only a few letters or words. Nothing has remained of the first 16 chapters of Job. The large fragments contain the remains of 28 columns (cols. 1-28) and cover portions of chaps. 17-36. The connected scroll has ten columns (cols. 29-38) and contains portions of chaps. 37-42. The text ends at 42, and while there is a blank column following col. 38, it is now impossible to determine whether anything followed at the bottom of col. 38 or at the top of col. 39, now both lost ..."--Description of Tg1 pg. Book excerpt: "While any translation of the Scriptures may in Hebrew be called a Targum, the word is used especially for a translation of a book of the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic. Before the Christian era Aramaic had in good part replaced Hebrew in Palestine as the vernacular of the Jews. It continued as their vernacular for centuries later and remained in part as the language of the schools after Aramaic itself had been replaced as the vernacular. Rabbinic Judaism has transmitted Targums of all books of the Hebrew Canon, with the exception of Daniel and Ezra-Nehemiah, which are themselves partly in Aramaic. From the Qumran Library we have sections of a Targum of Job and fragments of a Targm of Leviticus, chapter 16, facts which indicate that the Bible was being translated in Aramaic in pre-Christian times. From the editors' foreword to The Targum Onkelos to Genesis, this series represents the first time all the extant Targums will have been translated into English. Scholars of both Jewish and Christian communities of the English-speaking world have given a warm welcome to the series, which is filling a large gap in the body of Targums available in English" -- Editors' forward.

Book The Book of Job in Jewish Life and Thought

Download or read book The Book of Job in Jewish Life and Thought written by Jason Kalman and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its general absence from the Jewish liturgical cycle and its limited place in Jewish practice, the Book of Job has permeated Jewish culture over the last 2,000 years. Job has not only had to endure the suffering described in the biblical book, but the efforts of countless commentators, interpreters, and creative rewriters whose explanations more often than not challenged the protagonist's righteousness in order to preserve Divine justice. Beginning with five critical essays on the specific efforts of ancient, medieval, and modern Jewish writers to make sense of the biblical book, this volume concludes with a detailed survey of the place of Job in the Talmud and Midrashic corpus, in medieval biblical commentary, in ethical, mystical, and philosophical tracts, as well as in poetry and creative writing in a wide variety of Jewish languages from around the world from the second to sixteenth centuries.
