Book excerpt: The series seeks to contribute to the understanding of the variation and transmission of the New Testament by analyzing quotations of and allusions to passages of it in the work of Christian writers of Late Antiquity, many of which can be more precisely located both temporally and geographically than the earliest New Testament manuscripts. Racine (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) finds Basil (ca. 330-379) a valuable witness in that regard because he quotes abundantly and at length, apparently coping from a written text. A similar study has been conducted on his brother, Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394), so the combination adds much to the knowledge of the New Testament text in use in Cappadocia during the fourth century. The study is slightly revised from his October 2000 Ph. D. dissertation for the University of St. Michael's College. Distributed by Aspen. Devising careful criteria for selecting quotations and following established criteria for analyzing patristic data, Osburn reverses the commonly accepted notion that Epiphanius systematically reflects an early form of the Byzantine text. While his text of the Catholic Epistles was likely Byzantine in character, the Greek text of Acts and the Pauline Epistles used by Epiphanius was common in the Eastern Mediterranean during the fourth century C.E. and is similar to the Later Egyptian text-form found in Codex Alexandrinus and Codex Ephraemi rescriptus. In addition to enriching our understanding of Epiphanius, this volume broadens our knowledge of the New Testament text in the fourth century. Book excerpt: Before the 1960s, the goal of New Testament Textual Criticism was singular: to retrieve the "original text" of the New Testament. Since then, the goalpost has incrementally shifted away from the "original text" to retrieving "any text" or "many texts" of the NT. Some scholars have even concluded that the "original text" is hopelessly lost and cannot be retrieved with any confidence or accuracy. Other scholars have gone a step further to claim that the idea of an "original text" itself is a misconception that needs to be abandoned. If this new approach in NTTC is correct, then the authority of Scripture is weakened or no longer valid. It will be shown in this book that such is not the case. Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the need to return to the traditional goalpost of NTTC, i.e., to retrieve the original text. Without a generally definitive text, the door will be left wide open to recreate any desired text of the NT. An unsettled original text will result in an unsettled biblical theology due to a lack of any authoritative and standard text. Consequently, it will lead to an unsettled Christian faith and practice.
