Download or read book The Message of Genesis 1 11 written by David J. Atkinson and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do we come from? What is our purpose? The key to how and why we are is found in the early chapters of Genesis. In The Message of Genesis 1–11, David Atkinson explores how the first eleven chapters serve as an overture to the rest of the Bible. They evoke wonder as God is portrayed in his creative power and beauty. They reveal God's loving mercy and salvation, even in his terrible judgment of those who turn from him and despoil the harmony of creation. With vivid insight, this Bible Speaks Today commentary illuminates how the meaning of Genesis is still resonant today—helping us understand both the greatness and the tragic flaw inherent in human beings. Although it was written thousands of years ago, the message of Genesis is one of timely urgency for the modern world: we are responsible participants in God's creation who must, like Noah, confront the possibility of global catastrophe. Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Genesis 1–11 offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, The Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. This beautifully redesigned edition has also been sensitively updated with more current references and the NRSV Bible text.

Book excerpt: The opening chapters of Genesis tell the story of how humans relate to the world— and to God. Genesis 1-11 is a parade of humanity's stories intertwined with the most intriguing subjects wrestled with today: the beginning of the cosmos, the nature of humanity, family, sex, deceit, death, murder, mass murder, ecology, agriculture, urbanization, and more. In The Universal Story, Dru Johnson shows how Genesis 1-11 is written in a way that informs the rest of biblical history—including the exodus, the kings of Israel, the exile, the Gospels, and early church. Genesis 1-11 presents a story of humanity that seeks to explain the background of every human endeavor. It is the universal story—the story of stories—because it is a story about how all of these things came to be the way the Hebrews understood them to be. These bizarre and ancient stories frame the story of God and His plan for earth and humanity.

Download or read book Be Fruitful and Multiply written by Andrew J. Schmutzer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Andrew J. Schmutzer puts his hand to an in-depth study of the Creation Mandate, known within Reformed theology as the Cultural Mandate. His analysis focuses on key texts of God's blessing in Genesis 1-11. In particular, Schmutzer explores the theological significance of Genesis 1:28 using a biblical-theological approach sensitive to the biblical literature. Delving into such issues as the nature of divine blessing, humankind's royal stewardship, and the role of the image of God, this study draws the reader back to the biblical text as the "lead carriage" for foundational questions in contemporary faith. The result is theological "grist," primed to address the related issues of ecological crisis, social oppression, gender studies, and eco-theology. How one understands the Creation Mandate has serious implications. Be Fruitful and Multiply provides a sharp tool to help address these serious issues.

Book The Text of Genesis 1 11

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book The Text of Genesis 1 11 written by Ronald S. Hendel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ronald S. Hendel offers a careful and thorough re examination of the text of Genesis 1 11. He takes a strongly positive position on the value of the Septuagint as a reliable translation of its Hebrew parent text. This position is contrary to that taken in most existing studies of the text of Genesis, including some in standard editions and reference works. Nevertheless, Hendel shows, there is an accumulating mass of evidence indicating that his position is correct.Hendel begins with a discussion of theory and method, and points out the lessons to be learned from the new biblical manuscripts discovered at Qumran. He goes on to argue for the preparation of eclectic critical editions of books of the Hebrew Bible a task long pursued in Classical, New Testament, and Septuagint studies, but still highly controversial with respect to the Hebrew scriptures. The critical edition of Genesis 1 11 which follows is Hendel's first step toward such a comprehensive task.

  • ISBN : 9004493522
  • Pages : 231 pages

Download or read book Words become Worlds written by Ellen van Wolde and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By carefully analyzing the text-semantic features of the texts of Genesis 1-11, this book offers a quite new perspective on the primaeval history. The first part of the book examines Genesis 1-11, which is usually read as a creation story concerning the human being in relation to God, in which the human being falls from bad to worse. In these text-semantic studies it is shown that such is not the case, especially in the rather exciting analysis of the story of the Tower of Babel. In the second part of the book the methodological framework of these text-semantic studies is presented.

Book Studies in the Personal Names of Genesis 1 11

Download or read book Studies in the Personal Names of Genesis 1 11 written by Richard S. Hess and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Genesis 1-11 is a text that may well have received more attention than any other in the history of literature. Nevertheless, what do we know about the personal names that occur in these chapters and whose influence has permeated all of Western literature? Hess provides a thorough investigation of the ancient Near Eastern background of these names and discusses how each played a key role in adding significance to the stories and genealogies in which they are found. By studying both the linguistic contexts in the surrounding cultures and the wordplay in the biblical texts, the author provides the first comprehensive study of the importance of these names and traces the implications of his results for the antiquity and power of the familiar stories in which they appear." -- Publisher description.
