Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Terrible Mysteries of the Ku-Klux-Klan Coming silently and swiftly into the most populous tracts Of the Southern country, it has taken the administration Of justice into its own hands, and made itself a terror to all evil-doers. It is especially the dread Of the Emancipated Slaves Of the Loyal Leagues, who attribute to it a supernatural origin and aid, believing that the dead soldiers Of the war rise at midnight and ride forth to slay. It is only positively known Of the eco-elna: K lam that it had its origin in Middle Tennessee some three months since; and thence it spread its branches, in various directions, through the South - some say wherever a Loyal League has been organized among the Freedmen. It is only necessary to read the terrible confession that follows, to be convinced Of its perfect truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER HI. THE WILD AND FROZEN PATH. When I woke, I was moving rapidly through the night air, supported on my horse by a strong hand on either side. My eyes were still tightly bandaged; but the cold rain driving in my face refreshed and steadied me. I gave a gasp of relief. The hands supporting me were removed; but we still rode rapidly on, the trot of three horses over a wet road, the splash of the fearful rain, and the near roll of the loud thunder. On we went in dead silence, the road getting rougher and wilder, the streams more frequent and broader, and the great rocks obstructing the way. I should think we had ridden some six miles when we suddenly stopped. I heard the right and left hand horsemen dismount, and by a sort of magnetism knew I was to do the same. By the same intuition I floundered after them up a steep and narrow path, guided only by the sound of their feet. Great rocks were piled in the pathway which seemed to be the dry bed of a stream. Huge boughs crossed the path and struck and bruised me; and great spikes of the mountain-thorn tore my clothes and lacerated my flesh. I was burning with fever; and my head split, almost, from the wound in my forehead and the fearful pressure of my blindfold. Often I fell, cutting myself on the hard rocks--sometimes 1 almost lost the sound of the tread before me. But I felt only one desire in my heart--one object burning in my brain--one wish in my soul!--and that was to go on--on--ever on! To solve the great mystery before my brain burst with the strain. Upward and onward I toiled. My breath grew short--cold sweat stood on my limbs--and the drenching rain grew colder, and the storm wilder and more fierce as we ascended. Suddenly we stopped. I heard the two voices I knew so well, on...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Ku Klux Klan It seems strange that, in narrating events and analyzing an organization existing in the United States of America in the year 1921, the most appropriate introduction to the subject consists of a few pages from the history of Germany during the Middle Ages. There existed in mediaeval Germany a secret organization, which, in its highest stage of development is said to have numbered over 200,000 members - the Vehmgericht, or secret tribunal. Its origin is clouded in obscurity, some authorities claiming that the system was first founded by Charlemagne, while others say that it was handed down from the most remote pre-historic Germans, but is understood generally to have first appeared in the year 1180 in Westphalia, after which it scattered all over Germany. Its head was the Emperor, assisted by the nobles of his court, and with them men of all ranks, associated together for the formation of "free courts," to try persons accused of crimes against persons and property. The members of the organization were known as "Wissende" or initiated ones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ku Klux Klan: Its Origin, Growth, and Disbandment It is the summer or 1865. The fires of fratricidal war, blazing iiercely and incessantly ior four long and awful years, have at length burned themselves out, and only a bed of smoulder ing, blood-red embers remains to mark the Spot of the terrible conflagration. For the first time in half a decade, the clang of the anvil and the sharpening of the ploughshare is heard above the roar of the cannon and the tread of marching tr00ps. The musket has been exchanged for a plough, and the arts of peace have replaced the feverish activities of war. But all is not yet quiet and settled. To one Who understands their flickerings and rapid alternations of light and shadow, the dying embers reveal a remarkable story oi the sad and deplorable condition or the South at this time. They tell a tale of violence and corrupt ion, of unrest and misunderstanding, of blighted hopes and bitter disappointments, of economic ruin and humiliating poverty, of insuperable tasks and perplexing problems, of ruined homes and abaect misery, of stifled resentment and profound sorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ku Klux Klan in American Politics Dr. Rice, whose book is economical yet inclusive, offers up several reasons why men did don silly robes and masks and burn crosses on the hillside. They are all cogent and I do not wish to anticipate his way of telling his story, but, in conclusion, I would like to touch on one reason he does not mention. Book Ku Klux Klan N0 40 Vol 40

Download or read book Ku Klux Klan N0 40 Vol 40 written by Thomas J. Jerome and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ku-Klux Klan N0; 40, Vol. 40: A Novel Ku-Kluxism is dead, and I have no desire to re-open the wounds inflicted by its bloody hands. I would to God that the very recollection of the existence of such an organization could be lost, and that all record of its deeds could be effaced. "Secret political societies are dangerous to the liberties of a free people, and should not be tolerated." - Constitution of North Carolina (1875). But while the hand of Ku-Kluxism is stained with blood, yet, considering the sufferings the South endured during the brief existence of that organization, it is the purest and whitest hand ever raised by an outraged people to repel the assaults of their oppressors. Under the reconstruction laws of Congress the people of the South were required to overthrow their own State governments; to repudiate, not only their State debts, but their own private contracts, as well; to ratify the taking from them by force, and without remuneration, almost their entire property, and to adopt Constitutions for their government which stripped them of the right dearest to every citizen - the right 10 vote and hold office, while the ignorant black man was clothed with all the rights and immunities of citizenship. Is it any wonder, then, that the people took refuge in Ku-Klux Klans, that they might strike against the ruin and desolation, peculation and violence that threatened to destroy them?
