Book A History of Ancient Near Eastern Law 2 vols

Download or read book A History of Ancient Near Eastern Law 2 vols written by Raymond Westbrook and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 1235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive survey of the world's oldest known legal systems, this collaborative work of twenty-two scholars covers over 3,000 years of legal history of the Ancient Near East. Each of the book's chapters represents a review of the law of a particular period and region, e.g. the Egyptian Old Kingdom, by a specialist in that area. Within each chapter, the material is organized under standardized legal categories (e.g. constitutional law, family law) that make for easy cross-referencing. The chapters are arranged chronologically by millennium and within each millennium by the three major politico-cultural spheres of the region: Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia and the Levant. An introduction by the editor discusses the general character of Ancient Near Eastern Law.

Book In the Cool of the Evening I Walked with Jesus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For me, the most fascinating and informative journey back in history would be AD 33, along an old dirt road winding toward the small unremarkable town by the name of Emmaus, nearly seven miles northeast of Jerusalem. Journey with me as we investigate the imagined words of Jesus of Nazareth as he spoke to Cleophas and Mary, encouraging them not to give up hope because the Messiah was, after all, predetermined to suffer and be a sacrifice according to the prophecies of their Torah! Jesus says to us, as he said to that couple, aEURoeHow foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah, the Christ, have to suffer thus before entering into His glory?aEUR (Luke 24:25aEUR"26). Jesus began with Moses (the author of the first five books of Scripture, the Pentateuch), then followed with all the prophets and psalms, enlightening the couple about the passages throughout the Scriptures that refer to ChristaEUR"the Messiah! This is where we will spend the remaining chapters or vignettes of In the Cool of the Evening I Walked with Jesus.

Book iGen

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean M. Twenge
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-08-22
  • ISBN : 1501152025
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book iGen written by Jean M. Twenge and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen in Time, USA TODAY, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and on CBS This Morning, BBC, PBS, CNN, and NPR, iGen is crucial reading to understand how the children, teens, and young adults born in the mid-1990s and later are vastly different from their Millennial predecessors, and from any other generation. With generational divides wider than ever, parents, educators, and employers have an urgent need to understand today’s rising generation of teens and young adults. Born in the mid-1990s up to the mid-2000s, iGen is the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone. With social media and texting replacing other activities, iGen spends less time with their friends in person—perhaps contributing to their unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. But technology is not the only thing that makes iGen distinct from every generation before them; they are also different in how they spend their time, how they behave, and in their attitudes toward religion, sexuality, and politics. They socialize in completely new ways, reject once sacred social taboos, and want different things from their lives and careers. More than previous generations, they are obsessed with safety, focused on tolerance, and have no patience for inequality. With the first members of iGen just graduating from college, we all need to understand them: friends and family need to look out for them; businesses must figure out how to recruit them and sell to them; colleges and universities must know how to educate and guide them. And members of iGen also need to understand themselves as they communicate with their elders and explain their views to their older peers. Because where iGen goes, so goes our nation—and the world.

Book Dreams Visions Imaginations

Download or read book Dreams Visions Imaginations written by Jens Schröter and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume are focused on the historical origins, religious provenance, and social function of ancient Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, including so-called ‘Gnostic’ writings. Although it is disputed whether there was a genre of ‘apocalyptic literature,’ it is obvious that numerous texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come. Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine) revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel) to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism, ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most characteristic features of these texts is their specific interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come. Against this background the volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different periods and various religious backgrounds.
