Book excerpt: You know them. But do you understand them? The Ten Commandments have become so familiar to us that we don't think about what they actually mean. They've been used by Christians throughout history as the basis for worship, confessions, prayer, even civil law. Are these ancient words still relevant for us today? Their outward simplicity hides their inward complexity. Jesus himself sums up the entire law in a pair of commandments: Love God with all your heart, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Peter Leithart re-introduces the Ten Commandments. He shows us how they address every arena of human life, giving us a portrait of life under the lordship of Jesus, who is the heart and soul of the commandments.

They are not some set of universal rules-they simply offer ways for a certain people to know a certain God-our God. What truths about God can be known through the Ten Commandments? God cares how we treat other people. God cares how we behave in marriage. God cares about the importance of being truthful. God wants people to take a day off from work each week. Readers will encounter Willimon and Hauerwas at their best as they explore the overarching question-What does it mean for people and the way they behave when they know some of these truths about God?

Book excerpt: What if the Ten Commandments were not just a set of ancient rules, but a guide to experiencing the good life today? “Adam Hamilton is a teacher of the highest order, able to bridge the gap between very old divine teaching and very current human reality.”—Barbara Brown Taylor, author of Always a Guest: Speaking of Faith Far from Home Nearly everyone has heard of the Ten Commandments, the list of “thou-shalt-nots” found in the Bible. Jesus saw these commandments not as onerous burdens, but as guideposts to help us experience a good and beautiful life. These ten ancient “words” were given to us by a loving God who longed to set safe boundaries, create order out of chaos, help communities live peacefully, and protect us—often from ourselves. In this book of Scripture and inspiration, bestselling author Adam Hamilton brings modern eyes to the most important set of ethics in history. He considers the commandments in their historical context, considering the meaning of each commandment in Hebrew, unpacking how Jesus reinterpreted them, and showing how every thou-shalt-not was intended to point to a life-giving “thou shalt.” He also explores how the latest research in science and psychology illuminates these commandments, rightly understood, as a way of ordering one's life beautifully in the present day. In a culture marked by workaholism, materialism, and social media-driven envy, God has given us a time-tested path that leads to gratitude, confidence, and peace. A landmark work from one of our most trusted biblical thinkers, Words of Life is an inspiring, thought-provoking read for anyone seeking to live a meaningful and joyful life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ten Commandments are the first direct communication between a people and God. Designed to elevate our lives above mere frantic, animal existence to the sublime levels humanity is capable or experiencing, they are the blueprint of God's expectations of us and His plan for a meaningful, just, loving, and holy life. Each commandment asserts a principle, and each principle is a moral focal point for real-life issues relating to God, family, sex, work, charity, property, speech, and thought. Written in collaboration with Rabbi Stewart Vogel, The Ten Commandments incorporates lively discussion of the Bible and the Judeo-Christian values derived from it. Filled with passion, emotion, and profound insights, it will move, enlighten, inspire, entertain, and educate you on the meaning each commandment has in our daily lives today: I am the Lord, your God, Who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence. You shall not take the Name of the Lord., your God, in vain. Remember the Sabbath day and sanctify it. Honor your Father and your Mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your fellow. You shall not covet.

Book The Ten Commandments in the Life of the Christian

Download or read book The Ten Commandments in the Life of the Christian written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the contemporary church biblical teaching revolving around the Ten Commandments is inconsistent at best. Paul’s statement, misunderstood, is often what Christians will run to, “for ye are not under the law, but under grace,” (Rom. 6:14). Christians often want to divorce themselves from God’s holiness. They frequently do not understand how holiness in life is attached to both God’s character, and God’s commandments. Today's church is very happy to take Christ as Savior, in some instances, as prophet, but not so much as King. Christ says, “If a man love me, he will keep my words.” The man who loves Jesus as he ought, what will the outcome be for him in this act of loving? “…and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him,” (John 14:23). Union and communion with Christ are set on keeping his words. The King commands his people and he expects them to obey. This is not legalism, as if one would work for their justification, but rather, it is obedience, that one would be made more like the King in holiness. Christ says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments,” (John 14:15). This work takes Christ’s Ten Commandments, the commands of King Jesus, and not only expounds their basic teachings, but also how those commands apply to the life of the Christian. First considered is the relationship between the Law and the Gospel. Then each command will be considered, in both their positive and negative aspects (i.e. do not lie, also means, tell the truth). Then three concluding chapters will cover, 1) those people who count the Law of God as a “strange thing;” 2) those people who turn away from the Law and reject it; and 3) how Christ is the “end” of the Law for all believers, and what that actually means in light of his covenant work and merit. This is a practical study of how the “law of Christ” applies to every Christian both in obedience and submission to Christ the King, and for the good of their growth in holiness.

Written by an outstanding group of ethicists, theologians, and Bible scholars from various church traditions -- Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist -- this timely work argues unequivocally for the divine authority and permanent validity of the Ten Commandments in both church and society. Download or read book Ten Commandments written by John C. Williams and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has given us ten simple rules to follow that we may have life and have it more abundantly. From the time He unveiled the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai until now, God's people have been identified by the fact that they follow His commandments. The Ten Commandments are the Christian's code of conduct that separates us from the rest of the world and serves as a barometer of our allegiance to the Creator of the universe. Ten Commandments: The Christian Code of Conduct examines the commandments of God and how they apply to the Christian life. The book also addresses one of the most misunderstood commandments--the fourth commandment and the call to observe the biblical Sabbath. Many Christians differ on their interpretation of this commandment, but through a clear study of the Bible, this book points to the truth of the Sabbath and the importance for Christians to follow all ten commandments. As the end of the world draws near, those who will be ready for Christ's return are "those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Rev. 14:12). May God's followers be found keeping all ten of His commandments!

Book The Ten Commandments

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Hazony
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2010-09-07
  • ISBN : 9781416562511
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Ten Commandments written by David Hazony and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ACROSS THE WESTERN WORLD, the Ten Commandments have become a source of both inspiration and controversy, whether in Supreme Court rulings, in film and literature, or as a religious icon gracing houses of worship of every Christian and Jewish denomination. But what do the commandments really stand for? According to polls, less than half of all Americans can even name more than four of them. Fewer still can name all ten, or have a clear idea of the ideals they were meant to promote. For most of us, agnostics and faithful alike, they have been relegated to the level of a symbol, and the teachings they contain are all but forgotten. In Western life today, the Ten Commandments are everywhere— except where we need them most. In The Ten Commandments, David Hazony offers a powerful new look at our most venerable moral text. Combining a fresh reading of the Old Testament’s most riveting stories and ancient rabbinic legends with a fearless exploration of what ails society today, Hazony shows that the Ten Commandments are not just a set of obscure laws but encapsulate a deeply valuable approach to life—one that is as relevant now as it was when they first appeared more than two millennia ago. The Ten Commandments begins with a daring claim: Although they have become a universally recognizable symbol of biblically based religion, they are not, strictly speaking, a religious text. Rather than making a statement about faith or mystical realms inaccessible to reason, they contain a coherent prescription for how to make a better world. At their core stands what Hazony calls the "spirit of redemption," which he describes as one of the two basic spiritual components of Western civilization. While the Greeks gave us the "spirit of reason," teaching that we should be free to explore and express our views, the spirit of redemption teaches that every individual can, and should, act to improve the world. This spirit reached us from ancient Israel, in the form of the Hebrew Bible, and has stood at the heart of the most important social movements in our history. Going through the commandments one by one, Hazony shows how each represents a poignant declaration about honesty, the self, life, love, freedom, community, and inner peace. Each commandment, we discover, adds another piece to the puzzle of how the redemptive spirit may enter our lives and help us become more caring, world-changing individuals. Part memoir, part scholarship, part manifesto for a vital approach to life, The Ten Commandments tackles some of the most painful human questions that stand at the heart of who we are as modern, thinking people—and offers answers that are sure to start a new discussion about the meaning of one of our most enduring, yet least understood, traditions.

Book The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes

Download or read book The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes written by Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are often considered significant texts for the Christian moral life. However, most interpretations of these passages either focus on the original meaning of the text or how the texts should impact ordinary living today. In The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan brings together biblical studies and Christian ethics to look at these foundational texts in a new way. For each passage Chan asks both what the texts meant and what they mean today. He helps readers to carefully study the text’s original meaning, then interpret the text within a sound ethical framework. The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes is an excellent introduction to key concepts in biblical studies and Christian ethics that combines sound study with warmth and wisdom.
