This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veil of the Temple or From Dark to Twilight Mrs. Vernon at intervals would offer up to this deity an elaborately serious observation, as though it were a species of sacrifice, or propose in vain to introduce him to some celebrity. He would always, when this occurred, respond to her with condescend ing deference: but, singular to relate, the conversa tion going on around him, evidently had for him a far more absorbing interest than that which his so licitous friend prepared for his private benefit. Her question, for instance, as to whether the Archbishop, who had once been nearly expelled from the Eng lish Church as a rationalist, could in his old age be really a believer in miracles, he showed a disposition to shelve rather than answer: but he seemed to hang on her syllables when, patting an embroidered knee, she informed two adjoining dowagers of the aston ishing cheapness of her costume, which had, it ap peared, cost only thirty guineas, whereas somebody called Katinka would not have made it for sixty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Stained Glass: A Novel The Reverend Orme Leighton was one of those to whom the war had brought a double portion of bitter ness, for the Leightons of Leighton, Virginia, had fought not alone against the North, but against the North and the Leightons of Leighton, Massachusetts. To the Reverend Orme Leighton, a schism in the church would have meant nothing unless it came to the point of cracking heads; but a schism in governmental policy, which placed the right to govern one's self and own black chattel in the balance, found him taking sides from the first, thundering out from the pulpit, sup ported by text and verse, the divine right of personal dominion by purchase, and in superb contradiction voie ing the constitutional right to self - government. When the day of words was past, he did not wait for the des perate cry of the South in her later need. Abandoning gown and pulpit for charger and saber, he was of the first to rally, of the last to muster out. Nor at the end of the long struggle did he find solace in the knowledge that he had fought a good fight. To him more than the South had fallen. God had withheld his hand from the just cause, and Leighton had fought against Leighton! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Chosen People Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chosen People Classic Reprint written by Sidney Lauer Nyburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chosen People ON this day shall ye be forgiven and cleansed from all your sins: before God ye shall be pure! The solemn words of the young Rabbi were at one and the same moment an earnest command to future holiness and a promise of the Divine Compassion. He seemed, as he spoke, a fitting prophet of God's word. His slender young figure quivered with a noble enthusiasm. His dark handsome face was aglow with that light which comes to a man who believes himself to be dedicated with all his strength and vigor to a sacred cause. The Great White Fast - the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in all the year - was nearing its close. Through the stained glass western windows of the Temple Beth E1, the setting sun cast great pools of crimson and purple upon the oor of the synagogue. The vast congregation sat silent and responsive under the spell of this youth whom they had called from his little Western village home to be their guide. Book Goethe in English

Download or read book Goethe in English written by Derek Glass and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography was commissioned by the English Goethe Society as a contribution to the celebration in 1999 of the 250th anniversary of Goethes birth. It sets out to record translations of his works into English that have been published in the twentieth century, up to and including material published in that anniversary year. It aims to serve as wide a constituency as possible, be it as a simple reference tool for tracing a translation of a given work or as a documentary source for specialized studies of Goethe reception in the English-speaking world. The work records publications during the century, not merely translations that originated during this period. It includes numerous reprintings of older material, as well as some belated first publications of translations from the nineteenth century. It shows how frequent and how long enduring was the recourse of publishers and anthologists to a Goethe Victorian in diction, a signal factor in perceptions and misperceptions. Derek Glass was putting the finishing touches to the bibliography at the time of his sudden death in March 2004. Colleagues at Kings College London have edited the final manuscript, which is now published jointly by the English Goethe Society and the Modern Humanities Research Association both as a worthy commemoration of Goethes anniversary and as a tribute to Derek himself.
