Book Distilling Democracy

Download or read book Distilling Democracy written by Jonathan Zimmerman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zimmerman (educational history, New York U.) examines the history of Scientific Temperance Instruction, a curriculum on the evils of alcohol which was originally developed and advocated by a grassroots movement, and ultimately was mandated in all American schools for a time. He traces today's debate on drug and alcohol education to issues raised in this seminal episode. The debate over STI, claims Zimmerman, was really about the balance between expertise and populist desire in determining what should be taught to America's children. Book A Most Stirring and Significant Episode

Download or read book A Most Stirring and Significant Episode written by H. Paul Thompson, Jr. and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Atlanta enacted prohibition in 1885, it was the largest city in the United States to do so. A Most Stirring and Significant Episode examines the rise of temperance sentiment among freed African Americans that made this vote possible—as well as the forces that resulted in its 1887 reversal well before the 18th Amendment to the Constitution created a national prohibition in 1919. H. Paul Thompson Jr.'s research also sheds light on the profoundly religious nature of African American involvement in the temperance movement. Contrary to the prevalent depiction of that movement as being one predominantly led by white, female activists like Carrie Nation, Thompson reveals here that African Americans were central to the rise of prohibition in the south during the 1880s. As such, A Most Stirring and Significant Episode offers a new take on the proliferation of prohibition and will not only speak to scholars of prohibition in the US and beyond, but also to historians of religion and the African American experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The important role of the Temperance movement throughout American history is analyzed as clashes and conflicts between rival social systems, cultures, and status groups. Sometimes the "dry" is winning the classic battle for prestige and political power. Sometimes, as in today's society, he is losing. This significant contribution to the theory of status conflict also discloses the importance of political acts as symbolic acts and offers a dramatistic theory of status politics, Gusfield provides a useful addition to the economic and psychological modes of analysis current in the study of political and social movements.

Book Historical Dictionary of Women s Education in the United States

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Women s Education in the United States written by Linda Eisenmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-07-17 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of women's education in the United States presents a continuous effort to move from the periphery to the mainstream, and this book examines both formal and informal opportunities for girls and women. Through an introductory essay and nearly 250 alphabetically arranged entries, this reference book examines institutions, persons, ideas, events, and movements in the history of women's education in the United States. The volume spans the colonial era to the present, exploring settings from formal institutions such as schools and colleges to informal associations such as suffrage groups and reform organizations where women gained skills and used knowledge. A full picture of women's educational history presents their work in mainstream institutions, sex-segregated schools, and informal organizations that served as alternative educational settings. Educational history varies greatly for women of different races, classes, and ethnicities. The experience of some groups has been well documented. Thus entries on the Seven Sisters women's colleges and the reform organizations of the Progressive Era convey wide historical detail. Other women have been studied only recently. Thus entries on African American school founders or women teachers present considerable new information that scholars interpret against a wider context. Finally, some women's history has yet to be adequately explored. Hispanic American women and Catholic teaching sisters are discussed in entries that highlight historical questions still remaining. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and concludes with a brief bibliography. The volume closes with a timeline of women's educational history and a list of important general works for further reading.
