Download or read book Things I Did When I Was Hangry written by Annie Mahon and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of struggling with eating disorders and anxiety around food and eating, Annie Mahon figured that having a path, any path, would be helpful. When she read The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh, she found a path that not only changed her (and her family’s) relationship with food, but also transformed nearly every aspect of her life. In Things I Did When I Was Hangry, Annie shares her path to mindful cooking and eating. The tools Mahon offers fit together like a wheel, rather than sequential steps. Readers are invited to just jump in and take what works for them. Each section has a short humorous story about Annie’s own journey toward more conscious cooking and eating. She shares practices for developing mindfulness that will support more ease around food, and journal questions to help you look more deeply at the roots of your thinking about food, cooking, and eating. Simple, delicious, vegan recipes complement each section, demonstrating mindful alternatives for every meal and many eating challenges, including eating at work and school, eating at restaurants and on vacation, and mindfully feeding friends and entertaining. Mindful eating has been shown to improve body acceptance, diminish negative self-talk and support weight loss. Mindful cooking is a mindfulness practice in itself, creating more ease in our day-to-day lives. Annie Mahon’s recipes and suggestions are scaffolding anyone can use to build their own mindful kitchen and eating practices.

Book Life Is Not a Stage

Download or read book Life Is Not a Stage written by Florence Henderson and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millions of people around the world, Carol Brady is synonymous with motherhood, but growing up as the youngest of ten children in rural Indiana in the aftermath of the Great Depression, Florence Henderson lived a life quite different from that of the quintessential TV mom she later played on television. Florence's father was a dirt-poor tobacco tenant farmer who was nearly fifty years old when he married Florence's twenty-five-year-old mother, and was nearly seventy when Florence was born. Florence's childhood was full of deprivation and abandonment. Her father was an alcoholic at a time when there was no rehab or help for the disease. Their home rarely had electricity or running water. When she was twelve, Florence's mother left the family to work in Cleveland and never returned. Florence opens up about her childhood, as well as the challenges she's faced as an adult, including stage fright, postpartum depression, her extramarital affairs, divorce, her hearing loss, and heart problems. She writes with honesty and wisdom of how her faith and ability to survive has brought her through rough times to a life of profound joy and purpose.

Book Sleeping with the Dictionary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harryette Mullen
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2002-02-22
  • ISBN : 0520927834
  • Pages : 99 pages

Download or read book Sleeping with the Dictionary written by Harryette Mullen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harryette Mullen's fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, is the abecedarian offspring of her collaboration with two of the poet's most seductive writing partners, Roget's Thesaurus and The American Heritage Dictionary. In her ménage à trois with these faithful companions, the poet is aware that while Roget seems obsessed with categories and hierarchies, the American Heritage, whatever its faults, was compiled with the assistance of a democratic usage panel that included black poets Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps, as well as feminist author and editor Gloria Steinem. With its arbitrary yet determinant alphabetical arrangement, its gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games (acrostic, anagram, homophone, parody, pun), as well as its reflections on the politics of language and dialect, Mullen's work is serious play. A number of the poems are inspired or influenced by a technique of the international literary avant-garde group Oulipo, a dictionary game called S+7 or N+7. This method of textual transformation--which is used to compose nonsensical travesties reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky"--also creates a kind of automatic poetic discourse. Mullen's parodies reconceive the African American's relation to the English language and Anglophone writing, through textual reproduction, recombining the genetic structure of texts from the Shakespearean sonnet and the fairy tale to airline safety instructions and unsolicited mail. The poet admits to being "licked all over by the English tongue," and the title of this book may remind readers that an intimate partner who also gives language lessons is called, euphemistically, a "pillow dictionary."
