Book The Teeming Millions of the East

Download or read book The Teeming Millions of the East written by G. T. Bettany and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teeming Millions of the East: Being a Popular Account of the Inhabitants of Asia; The History of Existing and Extinct Nations, Their Ethnology, Manners, and Customs Beyond all other continents, Asia is full of varied interest to the inquiring and reflective mind. By its vast extent, its diversity of climates and physical features, its variety of population, its scattered tribes, its mighty empires and their wonderful history, its strange superstitions, its profound moral teachers, and its powerful religions, the Orient continent appeals in succession or in combination to the most far-reaching of our faculties and sympathies. Its historic records go back farther than those of any continent, unless perhaps Egyptian records may claim something like equality in this respect, and Egypt may almost be regarded as an annex of Asia. The prehistoric remains of Asia are as yet little known, but from what we already know of them early man in Asia passed through the same stages of using rough and polished stone implements for long ages as in Europe; and it may be inferred from the great age of historic records in Asia that the first men lived in Asia at an earlier period even than in Europe. Book Japan

  • Pages : 411 pages

Download or read book Japan written by Various and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present revised edition of the 'History of the Empire of Japan is not intended to supersede the original edition, the high qualities of which are, on the contrary, recommended to all students of Japanese history. That work admirably represents what might be termed the orthodox view of national history, and is free alike from the unscientific method of the more conservative historian, and from the superficial speculations of the more radical, but not more scientific, student. Were the present editor to write an original work on Japanese history, however, he would, it is unnecessary to say, change the entire manner of presentation in order to make it accord with his own conception of the subject-matter. In this revision, he has not changed the general order of the original work, but has merely corrected a few data which are obviously out of date, omitted those minor facts which may well be dispensed with, and made the general narrative somewhat smoother than it was. The primary aim in this division of the volume has been to supply a popular and accurate account of certain phases of the national progress that has taken place since the "History of the Empire" was prepared a dozen years ago.

Book How a Continent Created a Nation

Download or read book How a Continent Created a Nation written by Libby Robin and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Libby Robin explores the links between nature and nation. By looking at some of those who observe the natural world most closely--including scientists, field naturalists and farmers--she tells the story of how we as a nation have come to understand our land. Having left the cultural cringe behind, settler Australians are struggling with the 'strange nature' of this continent. Robin suggests new ways of living in an arid and urbanized continent in times of global change, and gives hope that Australia can move beyond the biological cringe.

Book Problem of Great Importance

Download or read book Problem of Great Importance written by Karl Ittmann and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-09-29 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the significant role population science played in British colonial policy in the twentieth century as the imperial state attempted to control colonial populations using new agricultural and public health policies, private family planning initiatives, and by imposing limits over migration and settlement. A Problem of Great Importance traces British imperial efforts to engage metropolitan activists who could improve its knowledge of colonial demography and design programs to influence colonial population trends. While imperial population control failed to achieve its goals, British institutions and experts would be central to the development of postcolonial population programs. Researchers, scholars, and historians of British history will gain greater perspective into the effects of demography on imperial governance and colonial and postcolonial British views of their place in the world.
