Download or read book The Technology of the Cottonseed Crushing Industry Classic Reprint written by Klare Stephen Markley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technology of the Cottonseed Crushing Industry With the exception of soybeans and spent distiller's grains, solvent extraction of oleaginous materials has been carried out in small batch units which offer little advantage and considerable disadvantage over mechanical methods, except for the more complete removal of oil. The successful application of solvent extraction to soybeans is due in a considerable measure to the inherent nature Of the seed. The structure and chemical composition of the soybean is such that it is readily amenable to 'flaking to produce particles thin enough to permit ready penetration of the solvent and, at the same time, strong enough to withstand fracturing and general disintegration during passage through the extractor. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Processing and Marketing Cottonseed Cooperatively From the standpoint of total volume of seed processed, cooperatives that mill cottonseed are relatively unimportant, since they normally crush only 5 to 8 percent of the seed produced. However, these cooper ative mills exert influence in various ways upon the industry much greater than their volume indicates. Table 2 shows volume of seed crushed by cooperative mills for the 7 - year period, 1947-48 to 1953-54. Tonnage crushed by individual mills ranges from around tons to more than tons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Standards of the United States for the Grading, Sampling, and Analyzing of Cottonseed Sold or Offered for Sale for Crushing Purposes: Effective, June, 1932 Various efforts to find a method for satisfactory appraising and evaluating the content of cottonseed marketed for crushing purposes have been more or less continuous since cottonseed began to be important, but the variation both of quantity and condition of the constituents had presented obstacles to this attainment. In 1925 the Bureau of Agricultural Economics undertook, in response to requests from substantial factors in the industry and pursuant to its legal authority, to develop such a grading system. 'through its Division of Cotton Marketing, studies of the nature and uses of cottonseed and of the grading requirements of the industry were made and a grading system based upon the chemical composition of seed was devised. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cottonseed Handling at Gins: Production Research Report No. 66 Although cotton has been grown for its fiber for many centuries, the seed has been generally used commercially only in relatively recent times. It is reported that in ancient times the Hindus and the Chinese, using the principle of the mortar and the pestle, developed crude methods for obtaining oil from cottonseed. They used the oil for their lamps and fed the remainder of the pressed seed to their cattle. For many centuries, however, the use of cottonseed in India and China never developed much beyond that primitive stage. The first cottonseed oil known to have been produced in America was exhibited before the American Philosophical Society in 1768. It was produced on a very small, experimental scale and was generally regarded as a curiosity. Little effort appears to have been made to produce additional oil until after the invention of the cotton gin in 1793. The increase in cotton production that followed this invention made the use of cottonseed a challenge. During the first part of the 19th century, mills in Europe began to crush Egyptian cottonseed on a limited scale. However, American chemists were primarily responsible for transforming cottonseed into useful products. Before the crushing industry was developed, cottonseed had no cash value except the limited quantities sold for planting-seed. Small quantities of seed were used for fertilizer and some was fed to livestock. Raw cottonseed, however, has limited value as livestock feed. Most seed was left at the gins. Disposal was a serious problem; some States passed laws prohibiting gins from accumulating large quanti t1es on their premises and from dumping seed into streams. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Research on Cottonseed and Cottonseed Products at the Southern Utilization Research and Development Division: A Bibliography of Publications, With Abstracts Only a little more than a century ago cottonseed was generally regarded as a waste product of the cotton industry, to be disposed of at some trouble and expense. So radically has this sit nation changed, however, that today the nine to 11 billion pounds of cottonseed produced annually in the United States return approximately $2 50 million to the grower. After processing, the products attain a value of about $1. 5 billion at the consumer level. Although production of cottonseed is generally considered incidental to the production of lint cotton, the seed is an item in the livelihood of the approximately 2, 300, 000 persons living on farms on which cotton is grown. Some 418, 000 workers not living on cotton farms are em ployed there at the peak of the season. In addition to these, the cotton gins employ some 51, 000 workers, and cottonseed oil mills another 12, 000 during operating periods. To these numbers can be added 3, 000 more employed in plants manufacturing shortening and cooking oils. Research has been largely responsible for converting this erstwhile waste product into one of great value, both from the economic standpoint and as a source of products to meet the needs of humanity, directly or indirectly. Many individuals, industrial firms, independent research organizations, universities, and state and Federal agencies have participated in the research responsible for these advances, and none more vigorously than the cottonseed industry itself through the National Cottonseed Products Association and other representative organizations.
