Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of Psycho-Analysis This little book owes its inception to an address which I gave to the members of the Psycho-neurological Society in London during my presidential year of office, but it includes much more than could be brought forward on that occasion. In its preparation some acquaintance with the subject on the part of the reader has been taken for granted. Book The Technique of Psychoanalysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Technique of Psychoanalysis Classic Reprint written by Smith Ely Jelliffe and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of Psychoanalysis The traveller in a foreign land who keeps to the main highway needs no guide. He does not even have to know the language of the country for a judiciously distributed pour boire will put him in touch with all the more common requirements of his surroundings. With his Baedeker in hand, he may even wander about in strange surroundings oblivious to the unknown claque about him and return to his haven of safety with an outline of the topography of the city, its bricks and mortar, and possibly its trolley cars. But were he to go into the by-ways, were he to reach out for an understanding of the rich life that is actually being lived about him, he is more or less shut off, and deaf and dumb must needs grope about if without knowledge of the language of the country. The doctor of medicine is in some such a position - his unexplored countries come to him, however, he does not go to them. His Baedekers - Gray, Osier, and perhaps a rich library, furnishing the details of many complicated structures - lead him through the more frequented paths of disease processes, but, like the real traveller he not infrequently finds himself lost in unexplored territory. A new language strikes his ear at every specialistic frontier that he would pass; a rich and apparently hopeless terminology has to be mastered if he would travel in new fields, and if he would know what is going on over the boundary he must make it a part of himself. It is of no service to him to rationalize his indolence by calling this speech new-fangled, absurd or unnecessary. To shut his eyes and ears to these new languages, refusing to learn them, only hampers himself, and the stream of active intelligence goes on, leaving him in an eddy of his own isolation. Words are only tools to be used to cut into the facts of nature, so that fellow workers, through mutual understanding, can make a concerted effort and clear a pathway into the secrets of life. Much of this data is incorporated in the present little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Psycho-Analysis IT is well known that Freud's work, of which this book IS a partial exposition, has from the beginning met with constant hostility, and that his conclusions have been combated with an acrimony scarcely equalledelsewhere in science in modern times. It would hardly be correct to attribute this state of affairs altogether, as some writers have done, to the mental stereotypy that is so grievous a characteristic of mankind, and which inevitably interposes a resistance to any revolution in thought.1 In the present case a greater measure of the resist ance is inherent in the situation itself, in a way that it will be well to explain at the outset. Book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis

Download or read book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis written by Joseph Sandler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book distills the essence of child psychoanalysis from the practice and thought of its founder Anna Freud, who for over 50 years has been at the forefront of this controversial field. Children are the most refractory of all subjects to treat analytically. Here, for the first time, is a primer on the difficult technique as practiced at the Hampstead Clinic in London, which was founded by Anna Freud and is today the leading child analytic center in the world. She and her colleagues expose their wealth of experience to systematic review, which yields up rich insights not only into child psychoanalysis and psychotherapy but also into basic child development. In addition, their findings have relevance to the understanding of emotional disturbance at all ages. The book follows the treatment situation through all its stages, from the first session to termination and follow-up. It focuses on the interaction between therapist and child in the treatment room, illustrating the points with copious clinical vignettes. One point examined is the structure of treatment with respect to such matters as scheduling sessions and handling interruptions. Another element that comes under scrutiny is the development of the child's relationship to the therapist, which subsumes such factors as establishing an alliance, transference, and resistance. The child's repertoire of expressions, both verbal and nonverbal, is explored, as is the therapist's armamentarium of interpretations and interventions. Woven throughout the description of these elements is incisive commentary by Anna Freud. Her commonsense approach gives the book unique value, lifting it to a rare level of human wisdom.

Book Classics in Psychoanalytic Technique

Download or read book Classics in Psychoanalytic Technique written by Robert J. Langs and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1977-07-07 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Robert Langs collects the most important and creative work ever published on how to do psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Classics in Psychoanalytic Technique. Practioners should base their studies upon. This revised edition builds upon his previous volume of works, The Therapeutic Interaction, as well as extended the critiques that were included in the earlier book. The book is grouped into subject matters, and then arranged chronologically within each category, so as to provide a sense of growth in psychoanalytic thinking. Beginning with Freud's intrapsychic foundation and oedipal emphasis and spanning all the way to recent contributions. Included are the works of Winncott, the Kleinians, and Greenson, just to name a few. Dr. Langs concludes the volume with a paper of his own addressing the question of the whether the writings constitute a solid foundation or a façade. In any field growth and change are important, yet one can never forget their humble beginnings. Which is why Classics in Psychoanalytic Technique is a tribute to those who struggled to advance the field of psychoanalysis.

There is a certain danger, on the one side, of its being treated from the somewhat narrow point of view inseparable from any particular branch of knowledge, and, on the other, of. Its being taken out of the realm of serious and scientific thought by amateurs who, rushing in where angels fear to tread, think themselves competent to discuss a highly technical subject without the essential training in its technique, viz., a. Thorough course of psycho-analysis under the guidance of an expert analyst. A study such as the one presented here is, therefore, greatly to be welcomed. Download or read book Psycho Analysis and Everyman Classic Reprint written by D. N. Barbour and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psycho-Analysis and Everyman Some quarter of a century ago, in the effort to heal certain mental troubles, a curative method was evolved to which was given the name Psycho analysis. The development oi this method and its employ ment were for some ten years the work of one man alone, in the face of hostile indifference or active ridicule. This man is Dr. Sigmund Freud, a Viennese doctor; by race a Jew. Were the applications of psycho-analysis confined to extreme cases of mental disease, the educated layman, for whom this book is intended, might well ask why he should concern himself with a difficult, and, by popular report, somewhat um pleasant, branch of medical science. On the contrary, psycho-analysis affects by implication our whole conception of Life, our ideas of right and wrong, our morals, our religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psycho-Analysis The last two chapters, and especially the last, should be regarded rather as speculative essays in application. They should not be regarded as practical programmes to which psycho-analysis is in any way committed. Readers unacquainted with psychology should not be unduly discouraged if they find some difficulties in the first chapter. A glossary of special terms is appended for the reader's convenience. For whatever sound psychological insight is to be found in this book I am indebted to Dr. Drever of Edin burgh University. But this does not imply that the opinions expressed are necessarily shared by him. To my wife, also, I am indebted for invaluable help in many ways.
