Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tebtunis Papyri, Vol. 1 The papyri which form the subject of the present volume were found by us in the winter of 1899-1900 at 0mm el Baragat (the ancient Tebtunis) in the south of the Fayfim, when we were exca vating for the University of California with funds generously provided by Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst. Brief accounts of the excavations have appeared in the At/zemum, 1900, pp. 600 - 1, and the Arc/zit) fur Papyrusy'orsc/mng, I. Pp. 376 - 8. The large collection of papyri which we then obtained falls into three parts (1) those from the cartonnage of mummies, which belong to the third or second centuries B. C.; (2) those from the mummies of crocodiles, which with a few exceptions belong to the end of the second or to the early part of the first century B. C (3) those found in the ruins of the town, which nearly all belong to the first three centuries of the Christian era. The present volume deals only with the second division (with the addition of a few late Ptolemaic documents from the third), and includes practically the whole of it; for though there are still some small crocodile-mummies containing papyri which have not yet been opened, it is unlikely that they will produce any well-preserved documents of importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tebtunis Papyri, Vol. 2 OF the large collection of papyri found by us in the winter of 1899 - 1900 at fimm el Baragat (the ancient Tebtunis), when we were excavating for the University of California with funds generously pro vided by Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst, that portion which was obtained from the mummies of crocodiles dating from the second and first cen turies was published by us in collaboration with Prof. J. G. Smyly in 1902. The cartonnage from the Ptolemaic necropolis has now been nearly all unrolled and in part deciphered, chiefly by Prof. Smyly, who is again collaborating with us in Part III. The present volume deals with the papyri found in the houses of the town during the first month of the excavations: with the exception of a few Ptolemaic documents these texts belong to the first three centuries of the Christian era. The unrolling of them was performed during the course of the excavations and in the summer of 1900, while we were occupied with other work, these papyri were studied by Dr. E. J. Goodspeed, who deciphered part of those here edited and is associated with us in their publication to him we also owe the bulk of the indices. The decipherment of the rest of the texts was done by ourselves in 1904, and the volume was put into type in the winter of 1904 - 5; but we were unable to resume work upon it until the summer of 1906, when we largely extended and altered the commentary, and added the appendices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hibeh Papyri, Vol. 1: Edited With Translations and Notes In editing the classical fragments we have continued to avail ourselves very largely of the most generous assistance of Professor F. Blass, whose weighty judgement we have followed in the authorship suggested for most of the new pieces (nos. 1 and to whom is due much of their reconstruction and interpretation, besides many suggestions on difficulties arising in the fragments of extant authors (nos. 19 With regard to the non-literary texts we have received much help from Professor J. G. Smyly, who has not only placed at our service' his intimate acquaintance with the contemporary Petrie papyri, but has in many cases revised our decipherments of the texts and made suggestions for their interpretation. His knowledge of ancient mathematics has materially assisted in the elucidation of the astro nomical calendar (no. And without his aid we should certainly not have ventured, as we have done in Appendix I, upon the difficult, perhaps even hopeless, task of attempting to solve the perplexing problems connected with the Macedonian calendar. Our proof sheets have also had the advantage of having been read through by Dr. P. Mahaffy, to whose liberality we owe the insertion of a facsimile of the calendar (plate VIII). Some assistance which we have received from other scholars on special points is acknowledged in connexion with the individual papyri. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Greek Papyri in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, Vol. 1: Literary Texts, Nos. 1-61 HE great majority of the texts here published, which constitute the literary por tion of the Greek papyri belonging to the John Rylands Library, were purchased by myself in Egypt on behalf of Lord Crawford or the late Mrs. Rylands. The locality from which some of them proceeded was ascertained with tolerable clearness, and the origin of one or two more is fixed by internal evidence. Wherever the provenance seemed sufficiently assured this is specified; when no locality is named, it is to be inferred that satisfactory testimony was not forthcoming. My thanks are due to several scholars who have kindly assisted me on special points, more particularly to Mr. T. W. Allen, whom I have consulted on matters pertaining to Homer, to Prof. J. Ilberg, who has made some valuable suggestions on Nos. 21, 29, and 29 (a), to Prof. Gilbert Murray, who has seen some of the proof-sheets and contributed a reconstruction of No. 15, and to Prof. Smyly in connexion with No. 27. Dr. Schubart was good enough to verify for me certain points in papyri preserved at the Berlin Museum. The non-literary section of the Rylands papyri, which is naturally much more extensive, will occupy at least two volumes, of which the first is already in hand and will, it is hoped, be issued early in 1912. A chronological arrangement will be adopted, and the next Part of this Catalogue will accordingly contain documents of the Ptolemaic and Roman epochs, those of the Byzantine period being reserved until later. Book Greek Papyri in the British Museum Vol 4

Download or read book Greek Papyri in the British Museum Vol 4 written by Harold Idris Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Papyri in the British Museum, Vol. 4: Catalogue, With d104s; The Aphrodito Papyri The general principles followed in this volume are the same as those adopted in the previous ones, which were explained and justified in the introduction to vol. II. There are, however, certain changes, which require a brief notice. As announced in the introduction to vol. III, the method of numbering the texts by their inventory numbers only has been abandoned in favour of a numerical sequence of catalogue numbers, the inventory numbers being of course added in each case. The catalogue numbers begin with I 332, the last number contained in the previous volume having been 13 31. This change has involved certain others. The references in the index are now not to the pages of the catalogue but to the papyri themselves and moreover, since all the Greek papyri of the present collection are included in the volume, either among the texts or among the descriptions, the previous 'table of papyri has been omitted. A numerical index, in order of inventory numbers, has been added for the purpose of enabling readers to find any papyrus pre viously referred to by its inventory number. The numbers of papyri contained in this volume are given in heavy Arabic numerals, according to the principle adopted in the volumes of the Egypt Exploration Fund those, on the other hand, which occur in previous volumes are referred to, as before, in ordinary type. There is, however, an exception to the foregoing rule. The Coptic papyri of the collection were not finally arranged for publication, and consequently did not receive their catalogue numbers, until almost the whole of the Greek portion of the catalogue had been printed off. Consequently most of the references to them in the commentary on the Greek texts are to their inventory numbers only. Since they are included in the numerical index at the end, documents thus referred to can, however, be identified without much trouble.
