It accomplishes its mission in an exemplary way at the highest level of contemporary research." Book The Jefferson Bible

Download or read book The Jefferson Bible written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Wyatt North Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2014-01-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Download or read book Jesus the Bridegroom written by Brant Pitre and published by Image. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling follow-up to Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. Includes a reader's guide and an excerpt from Pitre's The Case for Jesus. In Jesus the Bridegroom, Brant Pitre once again taps into the wells of Jewish Scripture and tradition, and unlocks the secrets of what is arguably the most well-known symbol of the Christian faith: the cross of Christ. In this thrilling exploration, Pitre shows how the suffering and death of Jesus was far more than a tragic Roman execution. Instead, the Passion of Christ was the fulfillment of ancient Jewish prophecies of a wedding, when the God of the universe would wed himself to humankind in an everlasting nuptial covenant. To be sure, most Christians are familiar with the apostle Paul’s teaching that Christ is the ‘Bridegroom’ and the Church is the ‘Bride’. But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding? And why does he refer to this as the “great mystery” (Ephesians 5:32)? As Pitre shows, the key to unlocking this mystery can be found by going back to Jewish Scripture and tradition and seeing the entire history of salvation, from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary, as a divine love story between Creator and creature, between God and Israel, between Christ and his bride—a story that comes to its climax on the wood of a Roman cross. In the pages of Jesus the Bridegroom, dozens of familiar passages in the Bible—the Exodus, the Song of Songs, the Wedding at Cana, the Woman at the Well, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and even the Second Coming at the End of Time—are suddenly transformed before our eyes. Indeed, when seen in the light of Jewish Scripture and tradition, the life of Christ is nothing less than the greatest love story ever told.

Book excerpt: To know a person to a very high degree, you need to know what makes them happy, so you can learn to do it, and what makes them sad, so you can avoid it. Jesus, the Son of God, is the visible image of the invisible God. If we want to know what makes God happy, all we have to do is figure out what makes Jesus happy. If we want to know what makes God sad, all we have to do is find out what makes Jesus sad. The events surrounding Lazarus's death and resurrection were so full of meaning and provoked extreme emotions from Jesus. Why did He weep on the way to Lazarus' tomb in Bethany? Could the answer to that question provide humanity clues to a deeper understanding of the divine nature? Reno Omokri unravels this and other issues in this book. The reason Jesus wept is not obvious and will come as a surprise to many. It makes for a very eye opening read and the reader is sure to come away with a much deeper understanding of who God is and what appeals to Him.

Book The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth

Download or read book The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth written by Peter Gillies and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a careful regard for the wording and nuances of the original Gospels, and with rm support from the very Scriptures that lie at the heart of Judaism and Christianity alike, "The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth" places the Galilean's mission to redeem the house of Israel in a striking new light by holding that Jesus, far from seeking to found a new religion or even to improve on the old, was striving to free his fellow Jews from religious bondage altogether. As Peter Gillies observes, 'By portraying his death as a sacrifice willed by YHWH, and in teaching his disciples to symbolically drink his blood and eat his esh, Jesus unequivocally set the stage for a profound spiritual crisis to arise in the lives of his Jewish followers. In my view, he was not seeking to establish a new religious covenant, but rather to provoke the utter abrogation of the everlasting covenant that bound the Chosen People to their tribal God. Truly, in a way that was both fundamentally apostate and pragmatically revolutionary, Jesus gave his life that his followers might go free.' Advancing a singular interpretation that effectively challenges the images of Jesus that have prevailed for nearly 2000 years, "The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth" presents a fresh look at the man whose death on a Roman cross changed the course of history. Please note: due to typographic complexities, "The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth" will only be published as a printed book. No eBook edition will be released. ""The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth" is one of those adventurous books that causes a reviewer to wonder how it was ever achieved. I am reminded of the great fourth-century Christian translator, Jerome, who recalling his work of translating the Hebrew and Greek texts into Latin at the request of the reigning Pope remarked: 'Tears and groans were every day my portion!' This book is not a believer's interpretation. In fact, Gillies describes his work as 'a freethinking attempt to cut straight through to the heart of the mystery' of the historical Jesus. Having found imponderable problems in the teaching of mainstream Christianity teaching based presumably on the four Gospels he has gone to the text with a will. While his work allows ample room for debate and critique, its style and aspiration invite reading and study." Robert Crotty, Emeritus Professor of Religion and Education, University of South Australia"
