Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Algebra: Including Trigonometry IN 1909 and 1910 the author had the honour of giving courses Of lectures on the teaching Of Algebra addressed respectively to masters and mistresses in Secondary Schools. The present volume is a practical handbook based upon those lectures, and containing what seem to the author the most useful things he has learnt during the fifteen years of his work as a mathematical master and the ten years in which it has been his duty to discuss with teachers, actual and prospective, the problems Of their craft. It is accompanied by two col lections Of examples Exercises in Algebra, Part I, and Exercises in Algebra, Part II - which are in tended together to cover all stages of school instruction in the subject. Thus the three volumes constitute a single work In the view Of the author the term Algebra should include in its reference all the Trigonometry, plane and spherical, which it is desirable to teach in schools, together with an exposition of the fundamentals of the Calculus. He has sought, there fore, to present these subjects, both in this book and in the Exercises, as a unified whole. Book The Teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools

Download or read book The Teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools written by Arthur Schultze and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools Since 1906 the author has delivered a yearly course of lectures at New York University on the Teaching of Mathematics in Secondary Schools. These lectures consisted largely of a concrete discussion of the problems that arise in actual teaching. This book was planned on similar lines, but the pressure of professional duties, coupled with ill health, made it impossible to carry out this concrete treatment of the subject through the entire extent of secondary school work. The author hopes, however, that all important and fundamental topics have been treated in such detail as to be of real assistance to the inexperienced teacher, to whom the generalities of abstract pedagogy are not only useless, but often meaningless. The chief object of this book is to contribute towards making mathematical teaching less informational and more disciplinary. Most teachers admit that mathematical instruction derives its importance from the mental training that it affords, and not from the information that it imparts. But in spite of these theoretical views, a great deal of mathematical teaching is still informational. Students still learn demonstrations instead of learning how to demonstrate. Book Summary Report on the Teaching of Mathematics in Japan 1912 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary Report on the Teaching of Mathematics in Japan, 1912 Following the resolution passed at the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians held at Rome in April 1908, an International Commission was formed to make a comparative study of methods and ways in the teaching of mathematics in the secondary schools of different countries and present a collective report to the next Congress to be held at Cambridge in August 1912. The words secondary school have varied meanings in different countries. This, in conjunction with other considera tions regarding the working detail of the enquiry, soon lead to the conviction, that such limitation is not only undesirable but even impracticable. So it was altogether dropped. It was decided that the work of the Commission should include the whole field of mathematical instruction, from the most rudimentary education to that stage of the university education, where original research begins. From these simple facts a vast amount of detail has been accumulated through almost endless deductions. Under the spell of genius there has been constructed a most wonderful edifice upon this foundation, a struct ure similar in many ways to a marvelous mansion with exquisite detail beautiful to look upon, but next to useless to the man who is to have a home. In both cases a wonderful foundation supports a structure of luxury, when by careful construction, a useful as well as an ornamental structure might have been built.
