Download or read book The Teaching of Mathematics Classic Reprint written by Raymond E. Manchester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics The fundamental principles of mathematics could be written upon a calling card. From these simple facts a vast amount of detail has been accumulated through almost endless deductions. Under the spell of genius there has been constructed a most wonderful edifice upon this foundation, a struct ure similar in many ways to a marvelous mansion with exquisite detail beautiful to look upon, but next to useless to the man who is to have a home. In both cases a wonderful foundation supports a structure of luxury, when by careful construction, a useful as well as an ornamental structure might have been built. Book The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States Classic Reprint written by Florian Cajori and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States On the study of mathematics in elementary schools of the American colonies but little can be said. In early colonial days schools did not exist except in towns and in the more densely settled districts; and oven where schools were kept, the study of mathematics was often not pursued at all, or consisted simply in learning to count and to perform the fundamental operations with integral numbers. Thus, in Hampstead, N. H., in 1750, it was voted "to hire a school-master for six mouths in ye summer season to teach ye children to read and write." Arithmetic had not yet been introduced there. As late as the beginning of this century there were schools in country districts in which arithmetic was not taught at all. Bronson Alcott, the prominent educator, born in Massachusetts in 1799, in describing the schools of his boyhood, says: "Until within a few years no studies have been permitted in the day school but spelling, reading, and writing. Arithmetic was taught by a few instructors one or two evenings in a week. But in spite of the most determined opposition arithmetic is now permitted in the day school." This was in Massachusetts at the beginning of this century. In secondary schools, "ciphering" was taught during colonial times, which consisted generally in drilling students in the manipulation of integral numbers. He was an exceptional teacher who possessed a fair knowledge of "fractions" and the "rule of three," and if some pupil of rare genius managed to master fractions, or even pass beyond the "rule of three," then he was judged a finished mathematician. The best teachers of those days were college students or college graduates who engaged in teaching as a stepping-stone to something better. An example of this class of teachers was John Adams, afterwards President of the United States. Immediately after graduating at Harvard and before entering upon the study of law, he presided, for a few years, over the grammar school at Worcester. Download or read book The Teaching of Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by David Eugene Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Arithmetic This work has been prepared with a view to the needs of Teachers' Reading Circles and of those who are giving in struction or supervising the work in arithmetic in the elemen tary schools. The effort has been made to free it from the more difficult technicalities of mathematics as far as possible, and from that phraseology of the world of pedagogy that renders educational problems unnecessarily difficult. It is the author's desire to place before the large body of teachers of arithmetic, rather than the few who are interested in the technicalities of experiment, a brief silmmary of the develop ment of the science and of the reasons for teaching it; a statement of the subject matter that may properly be selected for school purposes, and the arrangement of this matter in a course of study; a consideration of a few of the technical features of arithmetic; and a discussion of the work of the several school years. He feels it quite unnecessary, however, to repeat at length the simple explanations and devices that are found in any good textbook, believing that the teacher will usually find it advantageous in such matters to follow the book that she is using. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematical Teaching: And Its Modern Methods A few salient points of history may be useful to consider. About 1730 the Hollis professorship of mathematics and natural philosophy was founded at Harvard College it goes back near enough to Newton's time to enable us to see the impulse which. Caused its establishment. Again, the successors of Winthrop, the first Hollis professor, taught by English methods and essen tially English books, including Playfair's Euclid, till long after the Revolution. Webber's Mathematics, compiled from Hutton and the other English writers, and Hutton's own books, were the standard for many years. It was the military experience of the Revolution which led to the employment of French and Swiss professors in West Point Academy and its reorganization under Thayer, shortly after the War of 1812, led to the produc tion by Davies, Church, and Bartlett, of a series of text-books compiled from Lacroix, Legendre, and other writers Of the same nation. But about the same time similar things were done at Harvard College; and the Cambridge Mathematics Of John Farrar. Book A Textbook on the Teaching of Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Textbook on the Teaching of Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by Alva Walker Stamper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook on the Teaching of Arithmetic IN planning the present book, the author has kept in mind three aspects of the teacher's preparation: the need of the perspective gained through a comprehen sion of the larger teaching problems concerned in the teaching of arithmetic, the need of a clear insight into the content of arithmetic, and the need of an understand ing of arithmetic method. The book exploits no new doctrine. It lays no claim to completeness. It has been prepared with the primary aim of supplying the practical needs of prospective teachers, or teachers new in the ser vice. On account of the efiort made to refresh the mind of the reader in the subject matter of arithmetic, the read ing frequently goes beyond the requirements of the grades, this being especially noticeable in the treatment of percen tage and in the solution of problems. If any dogmatism appears in the context, it is the result of efiorts to be clear and convincing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Algebra: Including Trigonometry IN 1909 and 1910 the author had the honour of giving courses Of lectures on the teaching Of Algebra addressed respectively to masters and mistresses in Secondary Schools. The present volume is a practical handbook based upon those lectures, and containing what seem to the author the most useful things he has learnt during the fifteen years of his work as a mathematical master and the ten years in which it has been his duty to discuss with teachers, actual and prospective, the problems Of their craft. It is accompanied by two col lections Of examples Exercises in Algebra, Part I, and Exercises in Algebra, Part II - which are in tended together to cover all stages of school instruction in the subject. Thus the three volumes constitute a single work In the view Of the author the term Algebra should include in its reference all the Trigonometry, plane and spherical, which it is desirable to teach in schools, together with an exposition of the fundamentals of the Calculus. He has sought, there fore, to present these subjects, both in this book and in the Exercises, as a unified whole. He missed the whole point that so much of science is made up of not what is absolutely true, but only what is probably true with some kind of random error, and that fitted scientific laws are not pure geometrical curves but are bands of probability. Such a concept can help discourage some of the all too common tendency of people to think in absolutes and stereotypes. The Disciplinary Values. 2. The Pleasure Values. 3. The Cultural Value. 4. The Preparatory Value. An analysis of each of these values now presents itself for study. The Practical Values of Arithmetic. - The utilitarian value of arithmetic has long served to explain its traditional place in the elementary school curriculum. The mere routine activities of daily life demand a mastery of certain number facts and number processes. In addition, a care fully selected curriculum in arithmetic helps to give children an insight into social activities that would otherwise be unknown to them. It is necessary that children understand the meaning of averages and the modes of computing them; that they know the meaning of common mathematical symbols, of percentages of increases and decreases, of rates of taxation, of interest, of insurance - in a word, the common business practices of social life. Book How to Teach Elementary Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Teach Elementary Subjects Classic Reprint written by Louis Win Rapeer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Elementary Subjects The art of teaching is based upon a knowledge of children, of society, and of how one is to be adjusted to the other. For a knowledge of children we have the sciences of educational psychology and educational hygiene. For a knowledge of society we have sociology, or the social sciences in general, and educational sociology in particular. Direct experience with children and in society and first-hand study of and participation in life are indispensable to those who would guide life effectively as teachers. For helping the immature adjust themselves happily to our complex social life, we use among other instruments the subjects of study. We call the methods of teaching each of the various subjects of the school special methods as distinguished from the general methods of teaching all subjects. Our chapter contributors have been chosen from among the leading specialists in all the "common branches," most of them having written considerably elsewhere on their respective subjects. It has been the aim to give briefly such a statement of minimal essentials of matter and method as will not only be of assistance to many actual and prospective teachers and to parents in homes who attempt to teach their children, but will lead on to the monographic literature on each subject. With the very rapid changes being made in the elementary-school subjects by the modern scientific methods of educational research and with a teaching population of more than a half million, one-fourth of whom are new to the profession each year and four-fifths of whom have not had normal-school or college training, such a volume, we feel, may be of great service. Professional progress and the wide-spread application of recent scientific discoveries will be facilitated. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics in the Higher Schools of Prussia The well-known fact that the Prussians have long been studying the problems of education systematically, thoroughly, and successfully, led me recently to spend nearly an entire academic year in examining the outcome of their study as evinced in the present status of the work of education in Prussia. Some of the results of this examination are presented herewith. It was my primary aim in examining the Prussian higher-school system to ascertain their methods of teaching mathematics, but the work in mathematics cannot be understood without some acquaintance with the entire system of which the mathematical work is a part and by whose spirit it is dominated. Consequently the following account combines a general sketch of the Prussian higher-school system with a more specific and detailed description of the work in mathematics.
