Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual Arts The greatest present problems affecting the manual arts in education, whether that education be vocational or cultural in its aim, are centered around the selection and organization of subject-matter and methods of teaching. Believing this to be true, the author contributes the following chapters to the discussion of these problems, hoping that they may be of some service to his fellow workers. Several of the chapters have previously appeared as articles in magazines. When brought together, however, they have a significance which they did not possess as isolated articles appearing from time to time over a period of several years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Arts Public School Manual Arts an Agency, for Vocational Education However this may be, one feature of either of the two plans sug gested should be emphasized as imperative, viz: Put the-special work followed by the pupil in his senior year under the supervision. Of the leaders in the industry represented. I do not believe we shall ever get industrial conditions to obtain in the school if school men are permitted to organize the work of industrial courses, nu less they have had the special industrial training needed. On the other hand, I maintain that the executive heads in the school sys tem must remain in general control. Germany and England give us our best illustration of what can be done in this direction - by demonstrating the sanest kind of cooperation between the school and the industrial leaders. Book Manual Arts for Vocational Ends Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual Arts for Vocational Ends Classic Reprint written by Fred D. Crawshaw and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Arts for Vocational Ends The agitation of industrial education during the past few years has made all teachers of the manual arts in elementary and grammar grades, as well as in the high school, consider the question of the sufficiency of their subject and the efficiency of their teaching. If the manual arts were first introduced into the public schools for the purpose of making boys and girls more efficient, community workers and if, after twenty-five years of instruction in the manual arts, it is found that boys and. girls are still unable, when they leave school, to meet reasonable community demands, then something should be done to change this condition. Certainly the public schools should be held responsible for an education which will enable the youth of our land to perform a service upon leaving school immediately profitable both to themselves and to the community at large. If one is to receive a profitable return from a wage-earning occupation he must prepare particularly to do A what is required of those engaged in the occupation. A, vocational tendency, therefore, must obtain somewhere in the process of education. Inasmuch as the large majority of those at any time enrolled in the public schools must find a means of livelihood early in life, it is imperative that the public schools, even in the lower grades, offer an opportunity for vocational work. Book Teaching Manual and Industrial Arts

Download or read book Teaching Manual and Industrial Arts written by Ira Samuel Griffith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Manual and Industrial Arts: A d104book for Normal Schools and Colleges Teaching Manual and Industrial Arts is intended as a text for use in normal schools and colleges. Its primary aim is to assist in the making of necessary connections between the more general courses in educational psychology and theory of teaching and the special work of practice teaching in manual and industrial arts. While the discussions of the text largely presuppose a knowledge of psychology as a prerequisite, mature students and experienced teachers of the manual or industrial arts who have had no psychology may be expected to pursue the reading of the text successfully by devoting somewhat more time and attention to the reference readings suggested at the close of each chapter. Some experience with manual or industrial arts subject-matter is necessary for an appropriate appreciation of the discussions of the text. Lest the author be accused of inconsistency in the matter of his choice of philosophical bases for the various discussions, he would state that he has intentionally made use of both the analogies of dualism and of the conception of contiguity and continuity. (Cf. Dewey's "Democracy and Education," especially Chapter XXV.) The accompanying charts should make clear the grounds for justification assumed by the author in the matter of bases. Why there should of necessity be considered any lack of contiguity and continuity in the conception of dualism, and vice versa, philosophy has not been able to prove. (Cf. "Dualism," The New International Encyclopaedia for a brief statement.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copper Work: An Illustrated d104 Book for Teachers and Students in the Manual Arts During the past few years many experiments have been tried in the development of Manual Training Courses and much time has been spent in discussing of what lines of work they should consist. Wood and iron were the first materials used and are yet indispensable, but experience has led those who are developing this work to believe that there are other materials as well adapted to Manual Train ing work in all its various forms. Clay, used not only for modeling but for ceramic work as well, leather, brass, and copper are materials that have also been put to the test and found satisfactory in many ways. In ancient times copper was known as a useful metal, and down through the ages it not only held its own but increased in usefulness. Among its valuable properties may be mentioned toughness and ductility; its toughness enables it to be beaten into thin strong sheets, while its ductility enables it to be drawn out into fine wire. Copper readily forms important alloys, such as brass from copper and zinc. Work in sheet copper and brass has been introduced into the public school course with gratifying results. It has proved itself to be a valuable departure from other branches of Manual Training work and gives promise of being per manent. Sheet copper and brass offer possibilities for various kinds of treatment, either in the flat work which includes saw piercing, embossing and enameling, or in the raised work. There is something about this work that appeals to pupils and holds their interest. The nature of the material, hard enough to offer some resistance and yet pliable enough to allow its being wrought into many forms, the durability of the object when completed, and the variety of colors that may be obtained, especially with copper, all tend to make the subject not only interesting but fascinating. All exercises in sheet metal should be of some real value to the pupil; no time should be spent on work done simply for practice, but the various steps should be learned in the making of useful objects of artistic worth. In this, as in other work, it seems best to give each member of the class the same work for a while until he has become acquainted with the different tools and learned the limita tions of the material. When this has been accomplished, each pupil may be allowed to work out his own designs. In this the educational value is very greatly increased. The pupil conceives the idea and makes several sketches of it, carrying it through repeated changes until it is brought to the perfected design appropriate in every way to the idea. Some may not be fortunate enough to get a full equipment so that all of the various kinds of metal work may be done, but such may be able to make a beginning by doing light work in saw piercing, which requires a very limited equipment.
