Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus An exceptional value to some Of its parts. Gospels and Epistles, it is true, alike had their origin in the Christian community, and alike come to us with a certain impress of the personality of their writers. The Gospels are not unmediated reports Of the sayings and doings of Jesus, and the Epistles are an invaluable help for understanding who Jesus was and what He taught. It is doing Violence to the known facts Of the origin Of the New Testament writings to establish any sharp contrast between the Gospels and Epistles, and it is doing violence to what we actually find to be the presentation Of Christianity in these two sections Of the New Testament. At the same time, Christ Himself is the supreme authority on Christianity. His own words claim our first attention. What He teaches about God, and Himself, and the spiritual life is the regulative teaching, in whose light the teaching Of His disciples is to be interpreted. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. As to others, they are at liberty to believe what they like; but those who call themselves disciples of Jesus have no alternative but to renounce him or to accept what he says. His Court is the Court of Last Resort, for them It is just as well to remember this, in these controversial times. There are teachers and teachers, but there is only one teacher for Christians. When Hillel and Sham mai have spoken their last word, we await his Verily, verily, I say unto you. Any man is at liberty to quit Christ; but no man can Cleave to Christ and withhold aught Of loyalty from him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus: In Eighteen Sections When Wendt's exhaustive work, Lehre Jesu, appeared, it was evident that a new starting-point for theological reconstruction had been given to the world. It was a matter of regret that so magnificent a work should be marred by certain presuppositions which belong to the Ritschlian School. Beyschlag in his New Testament Theology offered some minor criticisms of Wendt's work, but did not unfortunately alter that defect, which was the most serious blot on the Lehre Jesu, the attempt to explain away one of the most indubitable elements of the teaching of Jesus, the fact of His pre-existence. I felt it my duty to give to my own Church the main results of these two invaluable books, especially in the hope that I might remove the great defect, while passing on the splendid spoil which these scholars had carried away from the study of years. I have now thrown the substance of eighteen sermons on the subject into the present form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Keywords in the Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Keywords in the Teaching of Jesus Classic Reprint written by A. T. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keywords in the Teaching of Jesus The seven chapters in this little book were delivered as lectures to the Jackson Springs Summer Assembly, under the auspices of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, in the last week of June, 1904. They are published practically as they were delivered and at the request of the Assembly. Many delightful memories come thronging my mind as I now write, memories of the wood robins caroling in the pine trees as I tried to talk to a large and deeply spiritual and sympathetic audience about the words of Jesus. If a still larger audience can be led to earnest study of the Master's teaching, this volume will not be in vain. These seven lectures are not an exhaustive discussion of the teaching of Christ. No book is that, but this one only claims to set forth the main points in Christ's teaching around which the rest clings. The first chapter discusses the same theme as the author's book, "The Teaching of Jesus Concerning God the Father," American Tract Society, New York, 1904. Book Teacher s Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teacher s Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Classic Reprint written by Harris Franklin Rall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual for the Teachings of Jesus Two great ideas underlie the Kingdom of God Series. The first is the idea of the Kingdom. There is a Kingdom that is more than church in this world or heaven in the next; it is the new earth in which the Spirit of God shall rule men's hearts and homes, in which the good will of God shall be done in the factory and on the street, in the nation and among the nations of the earth. Back of these studies is the great thought that such a new world is coming. The second great idea is that this Kingdom is a development. God is growing a world just as we see him growing Christians round about us. That this is God's method we can see by looking at the world round about us: God does not make things over suddenly by an outside force, but works gradually and from within. In other words, it is the principle of life working from within rather than a machine working from without. The Bible shows us that this has been his way in the past. We trace there God's increasing revelation of himself to men, and his increasing gift of his life in men. In all your teaching of this course be sure to have these two great ideas stand out clearly before the class. See that they grasp its point of view at the very start. The first year of this course considered the development of the Kingdom as shown in the Old Testament. Now we come to the central and supreme event in this story of the Kingdom, how God perfectly revealed himself in Jesus Christ, and how with Christ there began the new epoch in the making of the new earth. The Teacher's Preparation Two steps are necessary in the preparation of every lesson by the teacher. He must first master the material of the lesson; he must then plan how to teach it. Book The Teaching of Jesus Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Jesus Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Hans Hinrich Wendt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 2 It will be seen that, throughout the construction of the present work, our author stands on the scaffolding of his earlier work, in which he has devoted patient and inde pendent study to the examination of the Gospel sources. Here we have, not a process of destructive criticism, but a process of positive reconstruction on the basis of criticism. Many are inclined to ask, in regard to a criticism which seems only to achieve greater confusion and unsettlement of the grounds of Christian faith, What, then, shall we have left after this devastating flood has passed In the present work we have Dr. Wendt's answer to that question, so far as the teaching of Jesus is concerned. Here, he might say, is so much term firma, more or less perfectly reclaimed by historical research from the chaos into which the Zeitgeist of modern criticism had thrown the whole territory. Briefly, it may be said that, so far as criticism, apart from exegesis, is concerned, all fundamental Christian doctrine remains; for though some will take exception to the author's soteriology as being too subjective, in accordance with the theology of Ritschl, this too arises, not from the critical elimination of essential elements of the Gospel reports, but mainly from the fact that it is the teaching of Jesus, not also that of Paul, that is under discussion. In connection with this, the reader will not fail to bestow attention Upon the highly-suggestive preface which the author has written for this translation.
