This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Four Years' Course in German for Secondary Schools The prime conditions of success in oral practice are an early start, immediately after the discussion of pronunciation, and, so far as possible, uninterrupted continuance. The more exceptions the teacher makes in favor of English, the harder he will find it to make the pupils speak German at all. If German is from the first the medium of instruction, the pupils will accept it as a mat ter of course and will soon take pride and delight in their speak ing ability; classes thus trained are invariably more attentive, alert, and interested than those taught by the grammar or read ing method. But if oral practice is introduced only spasmodically, or late in the course, the pupils will look upon it as more or less of an imposition, an added hardship, and this attitude on their part will tend to diminish even the very moderate results which such a method might otherwise produce. Book The Teaching of Modern Languages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Modern Languages Classic Reprint written by Leopold Bahlsen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages The question of methods has doubtless occupied the attention of teachers as long as language teaching has existed. There was a time, however, when there was no dispute regarding those questions which are to-day most generally discussed; when each language teacher, apart from the slight peculiarities of his own individuality, pursued the same course. In this place we are interested merely in foreign-language teaching; and in our discussion we must begin at a point before civilized people, in the accepted meaning of the word, inhabited North America. There was at that time in the Old World but one foreign language in the schools: Latin. It was not until later that Greek was added; it was not until after the destruction of Constantinople by the Turks (1453) that highly educated Greeks fled toward the West, taking with them their language and the remains of their art. Latin became thereafter the common language of the educated, of the learned. Whoever would rise to higher refinement, whoever would enjoy the beauties of the classics, was obliged to learn the ancient languages, - there was no other possibility. And the purpose of such study indicated at once and in a perfectly natural manner the way to be followed - and the means of making the start in this way. Students wished to understand the classics. Without further ado they took up the various authors and began to decipher them, gradually becoming at home in the language. In the Latin schools Cicero was put into the hands of the beginners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on German Schools: With Special Relation to Curriculum, and Methods of Teaching This book is not a treatise on German education as a whole. Not months, but years Of patient inquiry would be necessary to undertake such a task. I rather hoped by confining my work within narrower limits to accomplish something of more permanent value. I had endeavoured, before visiting the country, to prepare myself by a careful perusal of all available reports on German education, and as many of the Official syllabuses of work as I could Obtain. Book German Higher Schools

Download or read book German Higher Schools written by James E. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Higher Schools: The History, Organization and Methods of Secondary Education in Germany But as Prussia is the larger part of the Empire both in area and population, and by far the most important state politically in the Confederation, it is doing no great injustice to consider German schools from the Prussian standpoint. A foreign institution, however simple it appears to the casual observer, presents a wonderful complexity to the student. And the longer he studies the more complex it grows. After a six months' residence abroad I was more confident of my ability to interpret the German school system than I am now, at the end of almost five years' continuous study and investigation. No one of my readers, I am sure, can be more dissatisfied than I am myself with this attempt to portray German ideals and German methods. The subject is too important to be lightly treated and too extensive to be understood on short acquaintance. I trust, however, that my work may lighten the labours of other students in this field and prove to be of some practical worth to educators. Sermonizing on the basis of foreign customs is always of doubtful expediency. It is, indeed, questionable whether there is anything peculiar to the German theory and practice of teaching which is directly applicable to British or American conditions. Each nation must educate itself in its own way and for its own ends. The chief value of foreign examples consists in a rational understanding of the foreign way of adapting means to ends in the realization of great ideals. In this work, therefore, I have studiously resisted the temptation to point out the moral of every tale. The intelligent reader is capable of drawing his own conclusions; he who reads merely to imitate needs no encouragement. It has been my aim to make each chapter as complete in itself as possible, even at the risk of some repetition of important facts. Book The Teaching of German in Secondary Schools

Download or read book The Teaching of German in Secondary Schools written by Elijah Williams Bagster-Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of German in Secondary Schools The following pages represent the outgrowth of experience in high school work, of lectures given to intending teachers, and of a first-hand study of modern language instruction in various parts of Germany. The book is planned to give teachers, in book form, a helpful discussion of the main elements that go to make up a modern language course in secondary schools. Much of the material has long since been common property, perhaps, but has never, to my knowledge, been presented in so detailed a form, with the possible exception of "The Practical Study of Languages," by Sweet, which also serves a different purpose. This book will have to deal largely with answering two questions: Firstly, what is the best work we can hope to do in a course extending over a maximum period of four years in the high school? Secondly, what has experience to teach us as to the best way to do it? We are still in the experimental stage of language teaching, and probably shall be for some time to come. The time is not ripe for any man to come and say, and scientifically prove, "my method is the method of language teaching." We still lack scientific data with regard to the mental processes involved in learning a foreign language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Schools Universities in Germany The book on Schools and Universities on the Con tinent, ' which I published in 1868, has long been out of print 5 I now republish that part of it which re lates to Germany. The historical interest of tracing the development of the French school-system, from the University of Paris and its colleges down to the lyceums and faculties of the present day, is extremely great; the practical value of this school-system, in affording lessons for English people's guidance at the present moment, is small. The German schools and universities, on the other hand, offer an abundance of such lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language Work Below the High School: Adapted From the German In the composition lessons, an interesting body of thought is suggested in such manner as to se cure brevity and reasonable uniformity in the exercises, and as much originality in the pupils as is consistent with the mastery of form. Brevity of composition prevents tediousness; while a fair degree of uniformity makes it possible for most exercises to be corrected in the class, thus accur ing a large amount of practice in writing without overburdening the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Minnesota: Bulletin for Teachers of German This is the third of a series of bulletins on the teaching of high-school subjects, prepared under the auspices of the College of Education at the University of Minnesota. These bulletins do not undertake to give detailed treatment of special methods or of many other important matters covered in the special methods courses at the University. They are, however, designed to present a summary of the text-books and materials available to teachers of the various subjects. In every bulletin an effort is made to confine the discussion to those problems which confront the beginning teacher and to supply those aids, suggestions, and materials which should be at her disposal in solving such problems. The Bulletin for Teachers of Latin was prepared by Professor Joseph B. Pike, and the Bulletin for Teachers of History was prepared by Professor August C. Krey. These and succeeding bulletins may be secured by addressing the Librarian, University of Minnesota, and enclosing the price, 25 cents each.
