Book The Teaching of Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Geometry Classic Reprint written by David Eugene Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geometry A book upon the teaching of geometry may be planned in divers ways. It may be written to exploit a new theory of geometry, or a new method of presenting the science as we already have it. On the other hand, it may be ultraconservative, making a plea for the ancient teaching and the ancient geometry. It may be prepared for the purpose of setting forth the work as it now is, or with the tempting but dangerous idea of prophecy. It may appeal to the iconoclast by its spirit of destruction, or to the disciples of laissez faire by its spirit of conserving what the past has bequeathed. It may be written for the few who always lead, or think they lead, or for the many who are ranked by the few as followers. And in view of these varied pathways into the joint domain of geometry and education, a writer may well afford to pause before he sets his pen to paper, and to decide with care the route that he will take. At present in America we have a fairly well-defined body of matter in geometry, and this occupies a fairly well-defined place in the curriculum. There are not wanting many earnest teachers who would change both the matter and the place in a very radical fashion. There are not wanting others, also many in number, who are content with things as they find them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solid Geometry The stone-millis geometry - plane, solid, and plane and solid - published in 1910, was a pioneer in its field, being the first of the group of American textbooks on geometry which in recent years have attempted in various ways to make the teaching of geometry conform to modern thought in education. It marked a wide departure from the traditional Greek geometry after which textbooks for secondary schools had for generations been patterned. This text has met with remarkable success. The educational ideals which it embodied are now recognized as national, and are summarized in the report OF the national committee OF fifteen on the teaching of geometry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plane Geometry Every attempt has been made to create and cultivate the heuristic attitude on the part of the pupil. This has been done by the method of initiating the pupil into original work described above, by queries in the course 'of proofs, and also at the bottom of different pages, and also by occasional queries in the course of the text where definitions and discussions are presented. In the writer's opinion, the time has not yet come for the purely heuristic study of Geometry in most schools, but it is all-important to use every means to arouse in the pupil the attitude and energy of original investigation in the study of the subject. In other respects, the aim has been to depart as little as possible from the methods most generally used at present in teaching geometry. (b) It is a means of logical discipline. With respect to the general historic development of the subject-matter of geometry, we Shall find: (a) That the practical side alone was recognized in pre-grecian geometry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Teaching Geometry, Vol. 9 This book fully meets the most rigid requirements now made in secondary schools. Like the author's other Algebras, it has met with marked success and is in extensive use in schools of the highest rank in all parts of the country. The method of presenting the fundamental topics differs at several points from that usually followed. It is simpler, more logical and more philosophical, yet by reason of its admirable grading and superior clearness The Essentials of Algebra is not a difficult book. The examples and problems number over three thousand and are very carefully graded. They are especially numerous in the important chapters on Factoring, Fractions, and Radicals. All of them are new, not one being a duplicate of a problem in the author's Academic Algebra. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Solid Geometry N English secondary schools, the study of Solid Geometry receives much less attention thdn in the corresponding institutions of Germanywand the United States. As a rule, the course adopted covers little more than the first twenty One propositions of Euclid's eleventh book. In consequence, however, of the recent changes in the teaching of plane geometry, it is probable that more time will in future be given to the subject; and the present volume, which em bodies the notes that have been used in this school for the last twenty years, contains, it is hoped, the theorems of Chief interest and importance. It is intended to contain all that a pupil really needs, except that which the teacher, and only the teacher, can best supply. While the proofs are not in the book in full and formal fashion, the author has given as much analysis, suggestion, and guidance as he feels to be Wise. Book Elementary and Constructional Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary and Constructional Geometry Classic Reprint written by Edgar H. Nichols and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary and Constructional Geometry This book is designed for pupils beginning Geometry at the age of twelve, or even younger. It is based upon the author's class-room experience with young boys during the last twelve years. It is hoped that it may prove an aid to those teachers who do not want a text-book except as a guide to the pupil, to enable him to review the principles developed in the class by answering for himself a set of questions similar to those asked in the class-room, and by working out practical problems illustrative of the princi ples studied. It cannot be used as a text-book from which lessons are assigned in advance to the class. Each prin ciple should be developed by the teacher and the class, working together - the principle coming at the end, not at the beginning, of the study - and then a lesson from the book, covering essentially the same ground, should be as signed. The book has not been divided into lessons, be cause sometimes a single paragraph Will afford material for several lessons, and, again, several pages can be mastered in one lesson. Each teacher should be free to develop his subject in his own way Without artificial lines of division. The main object of the first year's study is to make the pupils perfectly familiar with the use of their tools, so that in the study of Theoretical Geometry the construction of the figures will present no difficulty. In the pursuit of this object a great many useful working principles are learned, which greatly simplify the more advanced study of the subject. Download or read book Practical Exercises in Geometry Classic Reprint written by William Douglas Eggar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Exercises in Geometry This book is an attempt to adapt the experimental method to the teaching Of Geometry in schools. The main Object of this method, sometimes called heuristic, is to make the student think for himself, to give him something to do with his hands for which the brain must be called in as a fellow-worker. The plan has been tried with success in the laboratory, and it seems to be equally well-suited to the Mathe matical class-room. Care has been taken to select exercises which can be easily performed in an ordinary room with ordinary materials. Doubtless there are many experiments, which might have been included, missing from the following collection but it is hoped that the course will be found sufficient, or at least that it will indicate a way Of presenting the work to a beginner. Book A Text Book of Geometry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Geometry Classic Reprint written by G. A. Wentworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geometry When the pupil is reading each Book for the first time, it will be well to let him write his proofs on the blackboard in his own lan guage; care being taken that his language be the simplest possible, that the arrangement of work be vertical (without side work), and that the figures be accurately constructed. This method will furnish a valuable exercise as a language lesson will cultivate the habit of neat and orderly arrangement of work, and will allow a brief interval for deliberating on each step. After a Book has been read in this way, the pupil should review the Book, and should be required to draw the figures free-hand. He should state and prove the propositions orally, using a pointer to indicate on the figure every line and angle named. He should be encouraged, in reviewing each Book, to do the original exercises; to state the converse of propositions; to determine from the statement, if possible, whether the converse be true or false, and if the converse be true to demonstrate it; and also to give well-considered answers to questions which may be asked him on many propositions.
