Book The Teaching of Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by David Eugene Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Arithmetic The Teachers College Record for March, 1903, contained an article on Mathematics in the Elementary School by the author's colleague Professor mcmurry and himself. This number, how ever, has long since been out of print, and as a result of this fact it was thought best in the autumn of 1908 to prepare a new number of the.record on The Teaching of Arithmetic. This was done by the author, and the article appeared in January, 1909. Although it was thought that the unusually large edition was sufficient for all demands for some years to come, it was ex hauste\d within a few weeks, and it became necessary to print the article in book form. In spite of the fact that the work was originally written in a popular style, to the end that it might be read by those who have no more interest in mathematics than in the various other subjects of the curriculum, it has been thought best to make but a few changes in arranging for its publication in the present form. Intended as it is for those who are teaching or supervising the work in arithmetic in the elemen tary schools, it would hardly serve its purpose if it departed widely from the practical and entered the domain of pure theory. As between influencing the few or the many on a topic of such general interest 'it has been thought better to adopt the latter course, and to prepare a book that might have place in educational reading circles generally and serve as a basis for the work in the class-room for the training of teachers. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook on the Teaching of Arithmetic IN planning the present book, the author has kept in mind three aspects of the teacher's preparation: the need of the perspective gained through a comprehen sion of the larger teaching problems concerned in the teaching of arithmetic, the need of a clear insight into the content of arithmetic, and the need of an understand ing of arithmetic method. The book exploits no new doctrine. It lays no claim to completeness. It has been prepared with the primary aim of supplying the practical needs of prospective teachers, or teachers new in the ser vice. On account of the efiort made to refresh the mind of the reader in the subject matter of arithmetic, the read ing frequently goes beyond the requirements of the grades, this being especially noticeable in the treatment of percen tage and in the solution of problems. If any dogmatism appears in the context, it is the result of efiorts to be clear and convincing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Disciplinary Values. 2. The Pleasure Values. 3. The Cultural Value. 4. The Preparatory Value. An analysis of each of these values now presents itself for study. The Practical Values of Arithmetic. - The utilitarian value of arithmetic has long served to explain its traditional place in the elementary school curriculum. The mere routine activities of daily life demand a mastery of certain number facts and number processes. In addition, a care fully selected curriculum in arithmetic helps to give children an insight into social activities that would otherwise be unknown to them. It is necessary that children understand the meaning of averages and the modes of computing them; that they know the meaning of common mathematical symbols, of percentages of increases and decreases, of rates of taxation, of interest, of insurance - in a word, the common business practices of social life. Conclusions based on class-teaching and those arrived at by experiment and by a private study Of the individual have served both to correct and to supplement each other. The substance of the present volume has also formed the introductory part Of a course of lectures on the teaching of mathematics, which, for many years, I have given in various institutions to classes of teachers from almost all types and grades Of schools, elementary as well as secondary and tertiary. Book Principles and Methods of Teaching Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles and Methods of Teaching Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by James Robert Overman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching Arithmetic This book, as its title indicates, is a discussion of principles and methods of teaching arithmetic. A complete study of methods of teaching any subject involves two things (a) A study of guiding principles, and (b) A study of the details of method - of possible methods of presenting the various parts of the subject. The best place to study the details of method is in connection with a review of subject matter, but such a study should be preceded or accompanied by a study of general principles. It is the purpose of this book to do three things (a) To give a clear conception of the ends to be accomplished through the work in arithmetic (b) To analyze the teaching of arithmetic into the different kinds or types of teaching that occur in the subject and to give an understanding of guiding principles and a knowledge of possible methods of procedure, tools and devices to be used in each of these types; and (c) To make clear, by means of numerous illustrations and lesson plans, how these general principles and methods of procedure apply to the teaching of the particular subject of arithmetic. The material of this book has all been developed and used in the author's classes during the last six years, and is presented here in book form in. the hope that it may contribute something toward improving and standardizing the teaching of arithmetic. It is believed that this book will be found suitable for use as a text for normal schools and teachers' reading circles. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States On the study of mathematics in elementary schools of the American colonies but little can be said. In early colonial days schools did not exist except in towns and in the more densely settled districts; and oven where schools were kept, the study of mathematics was often not pursued at all, or consisted simply in learning to count and to perform the fundamental operations with integral numbers. Thus, in Hampstead, N. H., in 1750, it was voted "to hire a school-master for six mouths in ye summer season to teach ye children to read and write." Arithmetic had not yet been introduced there. As late as the beginning of this century there were schools in country districts in which arithmetic was not taught at all. Bronson Alcott, the prominent educator, born in Massachusetts in 1799, in describing the schools of his boyhood, says: "Until within a few years no studies have been permitted in the day school but spelling, reading, and writing. Arithmetic was taught by a few instructors one or two evenings in a week. But in spite of the most determined opposition arithmetic is now permitted in the day school." This was in Massachusetts at the beginning of this century. In secondary schools, "ciphering" was taught during colonial times, which consisted generally in drilling students in the manipulation of integral numbers. He was an exceptional teacher who possessed a fair knowledge of "fractions" and the "rule of three," and if some pupil of rare genius managed to master fractions, or even pass beyond the "rule of three," then he was judged a finished mathematician. The best teachers of those days were college students or college graduates who engaged in teaching as a stepping-stone to something better. An example of this class of teachers was John Adams, afterwards President of the United States. Immediately after graduating at Harvard and before entering upon the study of law, he presided, for a few years, over the grammar school at Worcester. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Mathematics Perhaps no subject is so directly in the flux of the instability of things as mathematics. For cen turies this subject has held the unenviable reputa tion of being tortuous; yet man, because of his un ending need of the subject, has endured silently. It has been one of the necessary evils of life, yet, did man but know it, wonderfully full of beauty in its symmetry and exactness. Indispensible to the man who builds, to the man who barters, to the man who meditates, it has ever been shrouded with a mantle of mysticism. One might say with truth that they who have the greatest need of the find ings of mathematical investigation have the smallest Opportunity to acquire a knowledge of them. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Arithmetic The State Board of Education expect to make no revolution in teaching the old subject of Arithmetic, by the issuance of a new book. They feel, however, that arithmetics have been too much given to talking and not enough to doing - that a student seldom or never masters the thought in a long and minute explanation. He cannot understand it before working the examples, and does not need it afterward. Hence, the explanations in the present volume have been made brief, and may be enlarged by the teacher as the occasion demands. Let no one despise the book on account of its small size, but work a class carefully through it, making it familiar by frequent reviews, and observe the effect. We respectfully invite the candid criticism of those who have done this that the defects of the present volume may be remedied in the near future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Elementary Arithmetic The present edition of The New Elementary Arith metic will be found to differ from the earlier edition principally in an increase in the amount of drill work given upon the fundamental operations. This change, it is believed, recognizes a tendency of present-day arith metic work which has the approval of the best authorities. In a few other respects also the book has been changed, notably in the direction of simplification and the bringing of the book into harmony with the advance which has been made in the teaching of arithmetic since the first edition appeared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Elementary Arithmetic He is next led to apply his facts to other concrete problems, such as: If John has one marble and Henry has three, how many have both? Which are not constructive, but which oblige him to use his judgment. Finally the number combinations thus learned and applied are fixed by a series of drills. An essential feature of these drill tables is that they make the subject less formidable to the child. For example, the tables on page 43 show that if the child adds three, say, to a series of numbers ending in six, all the sums will end in nine. As soon as the child masters the develop ment of a number, he is taught to associate it with certain facts of his daily life; as, for example, in connection with the number eight, is given the table of dry measure, and with the number twelve, the foot, the months, and the mysteries of the clock face. In this way the child is sure to be interested, and his powers both of memory and of judgment are developed. Throughout the book much use is made of graphic illustrations and concrete problems, such as drawing to scale.
