Book The Teacher Speaks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teacher Speaks Classic Reprint written by Seth Arthur Fessenden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Speaks The second aspect has to do with the personal preparation of the teacher. Some attention is given to the general problems of scholarship, and in these instances the part that effective speech can play is set forth. In developing this aspect of the text a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the speech needs of the teacher. To help the student become competent in this area, the discussion is supplemented by exercises and suggested ways of self-evaluation and evaluation by colleagues. It is hoped that such practice will firmly establish the habit of critical self-analysis as a means to continued improvement. The third aspect deals with the problems of interpersonal communications in out-of-class situations as they affect the teacher's professional success. Emphasis is placed upon the employment interview and other types of personal conference, including the counseling conference. Certainly the skills in volved in sharing ideas in face-to-face situations play a large part in the teacher's total effectiveness. Contacts with parents, community leaders, and school personnel represent occasions in which the teacher's speech personality is a major factor in his success. The fourth aspect is perhaps the key to teaching success: the continued growth and improvement of communicational ability. Though other factors are necessarily involved, the level of communication is an index of the level of learning. All teachers are concerned with the quality of the student's speech. They must be able to recognize difficulties, deviations, and maladjustments related to speech abilities. This aspect leans for its technical detail upon the earlier discussion of the prin ciples underlying the quality of the teacher's speech, but the principles are directly applied to the student in this phase of the discussion. Further, in order that the classroom itself can be actively a learning laboratory, many suggestions are made for the use of speech and for possible speaking assignments in functional speaking situations. Book The Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teacher Classic Reprint written by Francis B. Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher IN this dawning of a better day for the world the teacher is coming into a fuller measure of recognition. No longer is he living and working on the fringe of things, but nearer the centre; and no longer is his work thought of as tame and incidental, but rather as vital and essential. Civiliza tion has taken him into its confidence and is giving into his hands a piece of work that no one else can do so well. His work is not now detached from the activities of life. Rather, it is woven into the warp and woof of life itself. He is no lineal de scendant of Squeers, or Gradgrind, or the Hoosier Schoolmaster, or Ichabod Crane; but in these types he recognizes the hazy myths dwelling in the twilight zone of our misconceptions of the school and the teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Room Conversation Book We all agree that the object in learning a living language is the ability to speak it. To reach this end, the appeal should be made to the ear and not to the eye. It is due to the recognition of this principle that the German teachers in teaching English and French, and the English teachers in teaching German and French, are meeting with so much success. Every successful teacher of language tries to make his pupils speak the new language as much as possible. Book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint written by Joseph H. Wade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers Primer The child comes to school at the age of six or seven with a speaking vocabulary of several hundred words, say from five hundred to seven hundred words. This number will vary according to his environment and home influences. In teaching reading to these first year pupils, the aim should be to teach the child to recognize the symbols for the ideas which he already possesses. In other words, the aim is not to enlarge the child's speaking vocabulary but rather to convert it into a reading vocabulary. The child must learn to associate form and sound; the printed symbol must suggest an idea. Furthermore the child must learn to translate these symbols into oral language expressively rendered. If the class be one composed largely of children who speak little or no English, the problem is more complex. The teacher must build up an English vocabulary for the most commonplace actions and ideas, and, at the same time, must associate the spoken words which the pupils are learning day by day with the printed or written symbols. That is, the teacher must teach English speech as well as reading. In this Primer no particular method has been fol lowed absolutely. The aim has been to use the best features of the word, the look and say, the sen tence, the phonic, and the Gouin methods. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives in common use form the basis of the child's reading vocabulary. These should be taught as sight words. As an introduction to the work in reading, such commands as stand, face, etc., which are at first given orally by the teacher, may be written on the board and the children directed to obey them. The first sentences in this Primer direct the performance of certain actions, one purpose being to secure silent reading before oral reading is attempted. Book Twenty Talks to Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twenty Talks to Teachers Classic Reprint written by Thomas E. Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Talks to Teachers Twenty Talks to Teachers is an epitome of some of the discussions used by the author in teachers' institutes. It is not a profound book. It was not intended to be. Its object is to call the attention of young teachers to some of the every day conditions and problems which they must solve for themselves. The average term of service of teachers is little over three years, hence the great mass of teachers are young in service. A number of these have expressed themselves as being pleased with the discussions in institutes, especially so because they were plain homely talks rather than learned discussions. Perhaps these and others may appreciate them as well in the printed form. No one is expected to agree with all that is said. If the topics are suggestive to young teachers, if the book helps them over a few of the hard places, if it sets them thinking on some topics, if the advice that is given proves sound, and if it should encourage a few to deeper study, better preparation and broader reading, it will have done well. Trusting that it may form the basis of profitable discussions in teachers' institutes and meetings it is submitted to the great body of young teachers whose zeal, enthusiasm and optimism, has done so much in the past, is doing yet, and will continue to do so much for our schools and out of whose work must grow in the future a worthy profession of teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral English or the Art of Speaking This book has been written to supply a need. The vocational and civic importance of the ability to speak has been recognized by teachers of English throughout the country, but as yet the meaning of Oral English is rather vaguely and variously understood. We are con scious of our goal, but we lack method in our efforts to attain it. It is true that we no longer imagine that the art of speaking can be taught in a half-dozen lessons to the commencement speaker or the interscholastic debater.
