Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual of Physical Exercises: Arranged to Meet The requirements of the New Code Bpreparation classes where they would receive instruction not only in practice, but in theory. Too much attention is paid by many teachers to the practical work alone, with the result that they allow their pupils in school hours to sit and stand in the most injurious positions. If the truth were known, half of the children of the present day who suffer from curvature of the spine and other deformities have contracted them in the schoolroom, partly owing to the defective formation of the old desks and seats (which in nearly all the best schools now are being replaced by those made more on hygienic principles), but very greatly to the non-attention of the teachers, many of whom allow the children to sit in the most slovenly and incorrect positions, through sheer inability to tell them what is right. The teachers should be trained theoretically and practically, and even when this has been done the services of a specialist should be retained to visit the school at intervals to see that the work is being carried on efficiently. Book Exercises and Drills

Download or read book Exercises and Drills written by J. Leonard Mason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises and Drills: Being a Teacher's Manual of Physical Training Containing a Progressive Series of Exercises for Use in Schools Without the Aid of Apparatus The importance of the theory and practice of Physical Training is universally acknowledged. Besides the immediate benefit to the pupil and teacher, which is too obvious to need mention, there is also a lifelong advantage derived; for the pupils learn that the practice of systematic physical exercise is necessary for their health, and, consequently, will never in after life think themselves too busy to spend a few minutes each day in exercise, thus banishing many of the petty ailments with which they may be burdened. It is the object of the writer to place in the hands of school teachers a Manual of Physical Training which can be easily understood, and which will prove of assistance in conducting this important branch of school work. The method of arrangement will indicate to the teacher such of the important movements as are suitable for the class room, and will show how they can be properly arranged into short drills. Like every other branch of school work, Physical Training has its difficulties, and the lessons or drills may sometimes lag, but with a little effort on the part of the teacher interest can be awakened, and the real pleasure and benefit derived, when teacher and pupils become familiar with the drill, will more than repay for the effort it costs to make the daily drill a bright spot in the days routine. Various systems of Physical Training have been advocated during recent years. They all have their merits and can be commended each for its own peculiar excellencies. But for use in schools they all need modification and adaptation to the conditions and limitations of the school room. The system of exercises and drills presented in this Manual attempts to make a judicious selection of the best features of the different systems. It cannot, therefore, be classed with the Swedish system, with the German system, or with any other of the current systems. If it is to have a special name, it would, perhaps, best be called Eclectic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is the practice of some systems to omit certain exercises on the ground that they tend to confirm the pupil in his incor rect postures. The method adopted by this Manual, however, is to provide counteracting exercises, without omitting any exercises necessary for symmetrical development. And, in order to emphasize the correct posture, it is the uniform prac tice of this system to follow the contracting and stooping movements by the straightening, extending and expanding movements. Book Manual of Exercises in Physical Training Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Exercises in Physical Training Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Carl Ziegler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training, Vol. 1 Since those who do the actual teaching are the ones who should understand the needs and conditions best, all the members of the Physical Training Department were called in conference. This book embodies many features suggested by their experience. It is only when we attain correct and energetic execution on the part of the pupils, when teachers and pupils alike have grasped the purpose of each exercise, so as to be able to detect and correct faulty execution, that we may hope for those results which alone justify teaching this subject. In order that the greatest possible good may accrue to the pupils, the teachers must thoroughly acquaint themselves with the subject matter. The Instructions to Teachers, the descriptions of the exercises, the manner of giving commands, as well as the lessons which are to be given, must be carefully studied. Teachers must also observe closely the work of the special teachers, and learn the best methods of giving a gymnastic lesson. In this way they will learn to use to the best possible advantage the limited time allowed this subject. The lessons must be memorized so that they can be given without reference to the book. There must be a regular time in the daily program for the exercises, and at this time the complete lesson should be given. The conditions under which the work is conducted in the regular class room are not altogether favorable. For this reason the success of the lesson will depend largely upon the attitude of the class teacher. The fidelity and faithful cooperation of the teachers and those in charge of the schools will determine the results attained. This manual contains fifty lessons, each of which is intended to be for two weeks. Each grade will use twenty lessons, as follows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training, Vol. 1 This manual is intended as a guide for the teachers, and is planned to enable them to give the gymnastic lessons in such manner that the pupils will receive the greatest amount of benefit. In undertaking the preparation of this manual, I considered carefully the difficulties to be overcome in attempting to meet the different conditions existing in the various schools. I realized, too, the need of meeting the many demands made upon the Physical Training Department, for pleasant and effective exercises, as well as for a variety of work.
