Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual for Infant Schools and Preparatory Classes The Infant Model and Training School was established by the Commissioners of National Education, in March, 1838; and was arranged and organized under the immediate superintendance of Mr. Wilderspin. During the fourteen years that it has been in operation, the want of some treatise on the methods of instruction pursued, for the guidance of teachers trained in the establishment, has been much felt. To supply this deficiency, the writer, as master of the school, has been authorized by the Commissioners to prepare the following pages. They contain as much of the theory and practice of teaching as is needed for the proper management of Infant Schools; and the same mode of training, lessons, and apparatus, are equally applicable to the junior classes in male and female schools; so that. where, from local causes, Infant Schools may not yet have been established, preparatory classes taught on the same principles may be beneficially formed in such schools as already exist. Book A Manual of Instruction for Infants Schools

Download or read book A Manual of Instruction for Infants Schools written by William Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools: With an Engraved Sketch of the Area of an Infants' School Room and Play Ground, of the Abacus, of a Scheme of Instruction, and the Tables of Numbers The following Treatise is, as it professes to be, a Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools. The reader, however, is requested to bear in mind, that a treatise of this character must involve many of the peculiarities which necessarily belong to an establishment, proposing to itself the instruction of infants, from the first dawn of reason, ' and that it does not contain a course of instruc tion, which the teacher may adopt without further anxiety of mind. Concerning the lessons which are placed before the reader in the following Manual, it is necessary to remark, that they are not to be regarded as forming distinct sub jects of instruction, but as, severally, integral parts of a system. The Manual contains, in separate systems, the mode of arranging an Infants' School; the mode of teach. Ing the Art of Reading; the mode of Teaching the Art of Arithmetic; the mode of Teaching the Art of Writing; and, in the last place, a course of Oral Instruction. The lessons may, perhaps, appear unimportant, when indivi dually considered; but if any one is omitted in its place and order, the omission will be found to have destroyed the unity of the system to which it belonged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Years at School: A Manual of Principles and Methods, for Primary Teachers The reader will find nothing in the following pages which has not been submitted again and again to the tests of actual experience and careful criticism. For a number of years the author has devoted his entire time to the training of teachers and the supervision of primary grades. In the oversight of four hundred children, who are putting in their first year at public school, and the majority of whom come directly from the Kindergarten, he has had unusual opportunities of observing the results of Fr bel's methods of instruction. He has also been able to study the best means of blending Kindergarten methods with methods of the public school, in order that the children may pass in easy gradation from one to the other. Again, in studying the requirements of those pupils who had not received Kindergarten training, he has had an opportunity of applying such kindergarten methods as can profitably be introduced into public schools. The methods are specially adapted to graded schools, but the wants of rural schools have also been kept in mind. To be helpful rather than to be original has been the aim throughout. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infant School: Its Principles and Methods That there is need for a book dealing with the special problems of the Infant School, the writer is strongly convinced. There are two reasons which seem to require that an attempt should be made to deal with these problems at present. In the first place, the Infant School is dealt with in too summary a fashion in most books on School Method, and the importance of its work is by no means adequately represented. In the second place, the general plan on which most School Management text-books are based, that of the Curriculum or subjects of study, is not a plan suited to a discussion of Infant School Management. In the Infant School the central fact for the teacher is not the Curriculum but the Pupil. This, of course, is true of all schools, but its truth is most evident at the initial stages of education. Hence in this book an attempt has been made to discuss education from the central standpoint - the child to be educated. The writer is convinced that this is the only scientific basis for education, and that from this basis must be deduced alike the curriculum and the method. Apart from this basis, education becomes merely an empirical system of rules and traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Infant Teacher s Assistant

Download or read book The Infant Teacher s Assistant written by T. Riggway and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infant Teacher's Assistant: For the Use of Schools, and Private Families or Scriptural and Moral Lessons for Infants With Observations on the Manner of Using Them The Compilers of the following pages having been engaged in Infant Education, from nearly the commencement of the Infant System, and having had to encounter many difficulties in the selection of appropriate Lessons for the use of their own Schools, they are desirous of facilitating Infant Instruction, by placing within the reach of Teachers the fruits of their own experience. The Compilers have been indebted to numerous sources for much of their matter; this they have interspersed with original Lessons, and such hints and remarks, as, in their judgment, appeared valuable for general adoption. As far as they know their own hearts, it is not a desire of dictating, but of being helpful to their fellow-labourers, which has induced them to come before the public, and should they be the means of aiding any in the developement of mind, or in the right direction of the rising thought, they desire to be thankful, and will endeavour to give to God the glory. The value of education depends upon its aim: if our exertions be limited to a preparation for the business of this life, those energies which are born for eternity, are obscured and lost. The soul of man can only flourish and breathe forth peace, and love, and humility, when grafted in Him, who hath said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not."
