Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Ideals of Life and Happiness The aim of this little book is to help my fellow teachers to think deeply about the serious aspects of human life. After spending twenty-five years of my life as a teacher, I have reached the conviction that what teachers most need is not more theory or more method, but a wider outlook, a clearer vision, and deeper convictions concerning matters of great importance to the lives of the children which the try to influence. I have written as simply, as plainly, and as briefly as I could. I have not the least doubt about the truth or the importance of the principles which I have tried to emphasize. If these chapters, through the teachers who may read them, contribute in ever so small a way toward a larger life and greater possibilities and opportunities for children, I shall be happy. The selections from Emerson and Bryant in Chapter III are printed with the permission of, and by special arrangement with, Houghton Mifflin Co., and D. Appleton and Co. Book The Ideal Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ideal Teacher Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Teacher Teaching will be a profession when we have learned the need of thorough scholarly equipment, and single minded devotion to our daily and hourly duties in the school-room, under the guidance of those larger ideals which the world has set up for the protection of its cherished values. Nothing less than expert knowledge, tempered by a spirit of reverent ministry to those placed under our tuition, will ever make us professional teachers. Teaching will be a fine art when the situations of schoolroom life are made to call for the best in teacher and pupil. In such a soil of noble motivation the highest powers of human beings thrive. The teacher who drives or is driven, who forces himself or his children through stated tasks, without any sense of their significance, will not find teaching congenial. He will never know that absorption which is the essence of art. Half-heartedly he will teach, his other, more imperious impulses beckoning him away to another life. And while he stays, he will know only that pain of conflict which destroys the possibility of happy work. To achieve real success, teaching must be kept an interesting business, where the free impulses of children and teachers are so used as to accomplish useful things happily. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dreams and Ideals Joy is a gift of the gods, but happiness is an art to be learned. Happiness is the object of life. All mankind is working for it in one way or another. Some seek it through fame, some through wealth, some through posi tion, some through ease, some through knowledge. All these methods are wrong. Each is but the gratification of a single feeling. Happiness is infinitely mo.re Is it then the gratification of all feelings? Far from it. Happiness lies in the balance of the feelings. It is the equipoise of the mind between pain and pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: We is a dystopian novel written by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. Originally drafted in Russian, the book could be published only abroad. It was translated into English in 1924. Even as the book won a wide readership overseas, the author's satiric depiction led to his banishment under Joseph Stalin's regime in the then USSR. The book's depiction of life under a totalitarian state influenced the other novels of the 20th century. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, We describes a future socialist society that has turned out to be not perfect but inhuman. Orwell claimed that Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied this. The novel is set in the future. D-503, a spacecraft engineer, lives in the One State which assists mass surveillance. Here life is scientifically managed. There is no way of referring to people except by their given numbers. The society is run strictly by reason as the primary justification for the construct of the society. By way of formulae and equations outlined by the One State, the individual's behaviour is based on logic.

Book Happiness Essays on the Meaning of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Happiness Essays on the Meaning of Life Classic Reprint written by Carl Hilty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Happiness Essays on the Meaning of Life Great numbers of thoughtful people are just now much perplexed to know what to make of the fafis of life, and are looking about them for some reasonable interpretation of the modern world. They cannot abandon the work of the world, but they are conscious that they have not learned the art of work. They have to fight the battle of life but they are not sure what weapons are fit for that battle. They are so beset by the cares of living that they have no time for life itself. They observe that' happiness often eludes those who most eagerly pursue it and that the meaning of life is often hidden from those whose way would seem to be most free. To this state of mind - hesitating, restless, and dissatisfied, in the world but not content to be of the world the reflefiions of Professor Hilty, as published in Switzerland and Germany, have already brought much reassurance and composure and their message seems hardly less applicable to English and American life. Here also the fever of commercialism threatens the vitality of i deal ism, and here also the art of life is lost in the pace of living. Religion to a great many e'du cated people still seems, as Bishop Butler wrote in 173 6, not so much as a subject of inquiry. Book excerpt: The Sunday Times Bestseller 'Really brilliant and just crammed with wisdom and insight. It will genuinely make a difference to me and the way I think about myself.' Stephen Fry ___ Everyone says they want to be happy. But that's much more easily said than done. What does being happy actually mean? And how do you even know when you feel it? In Happy Derren Brown explores changing concepts of happiness - from the surprisingly modern wisdom of the Stoics and Epicureans in classical times right up until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. He shows how many of self-help's suggested routes to happiness and success - such as positive thinking, self-belief and setting goals - can be disastrous to follow and, indeed, actually cause anxiety. Happy aims to reclaim happiness and to enable us to appreciate the good things in life, in all their transient glory. By taking control of the stories we tell ourselves, by remembering that 'everything's fine' even when it might not feel that way, we can allow ourselves to flourish and to live more happily. ___ What readers are saying: ***** 'Immensely positive and life-affirming' ***** 'This is the blue print to a good life' ***** 'Thought provoking and potentially life-changing.'
