Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Essays and Addresses on Education The papers of this volume fall into three groups, two of the three being written by myself. From my writings on education I have selected only those which may have some claim to permanent interest, and all but two have been tested by previous pub lication. Those of the first group deal with ques tions about which we teachers, eager about our im measurable art beyond most professional persons, never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching? How far may it influence character? Can it be prao ticed on persons too busy or too poor to come to our class - rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be applied? And how shall we content ourselves with its necessary limitations? Under these diverse head ings a kind of philosophy of education is outlined. The last two papers, having been given as lectures and stenographically reported, I have left in their original colloquial form. A group of papers on Har vard follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.. She and I often talked of preparing together a book on education. Now, alone, I gather up these frag mentsn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Teacher: Essays on Educatioal Aims and Methods One of the best auguries for the progress of Education in this country is the freedom with which its methods and ideals are now being canvassed. A generation ago, educational reformers were few in number and were held in little regard: their influence was mainly confined to their own respective circles, and, for the rest, our Schools and Colleges - St. Edward's and St. Ignavia's, as D'Arcy Thompson called them - went their habitual way, contented to range within narrow limits and to acquiesce in an established and comfortable routine. But, during recent years, the changes have been rapid and continuous; the outlook of educational theory has been vastly widened; in the domain of practice there are now few traces of routine and almost none of acquiescence. This growth of independent opinion is well exemplified by the volume of essays here presented. The writers are men of high repute, not only masters but skilled exponents of the subjects with which they deal; and it is interesting to observe from what diverse angles they bring their judgments to bear upon the central theme. "What," asks the reader, "is the chief aim of Education?" "The training," says one, "of good citizens." "The service of the community," says another, "through the extension of scientific knowledge." "The quickening of the spirit," says a third, "through the emotions and the sense of beauty." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Pedagogy: Education, the School, and the Teacher, in American Literature We are physiologically connected and set forth in our beginnings, and it is a matter of immense consequence to our character, what the connec tion is. In our birth we not only begin to breathe and circulate blood, but it is a question hugely significant whose the blood may be, For in this we have whole rivers of predispositions, good or had, set running in us - as much more powerful to shape our future than all tuitional and regulative influencesthat 'come after, as they are earlier in their begin ning, deeper in their insertion, and more constant in their Operation. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classroom Teacher, at Work in American Schools There is no reason to classify books as of higher or lower degree in a professional series. The teaching of beginning reading, the standards to be maintained in erecting school buildings and in their equipment, the organization of the supervisory and administrative staff, the control of public schools by a board of education that operates under a state law all are important in the equipment of a teacher charged with the education of a child in the first grade. If the school system is weak in any of these particulars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teacher Classic Reprint written by Florence Milner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher The influences that have obtained in recruiting the vast army of teachers are infinite in variety. Some have taken up the work with definite purpose, some are teachers by acci dent A large number, especially among the women, have drifted into the ranks with no very definite idea as to how or why they are there or how long they may remain. But no matter whence these teachers come, no matter why, they should, being committed to the profession, consider carefully What it has to offer either as an occupation for a few years or for a life work. To the man, the situation pre sents one problem; to the woman, a different one entirely. There was a time when teaching offered to the young man a natural stepping-stone to a Wider or, at least, a different career. If he expected eventually to be a min ister, doctor, lawyer, or a business man, two or three years in the school-room was considered excellent preparation, and not a waste of time. Today it is necessary 'for a young man to select his chosen profession early and to enter upon it as soon as possible. All time spent in any other direction is deemed worse than thrown away. Competition is too great to admit of any but the direct road. This condition of affairs cuts off from the number of school men many naturally brilliant and well equipped, who, in former times, did excellent work in the school-room for short periods. Now and then today there is a young man who still finds teaching the first open door to Wider activity and broader culture. He teaches a year or two, saves a little money, growing a little bigger each month, until he sees other and more profitable opportunity for his increasing powers opening before him. This young man does not have much knowledge of pedagogy, often has no experience at all, but he brings something vital, virile, to the school-room which more than balances lack in technical requirements. What he brings counts for more than normal school train ing, a teacher's diploma from college, or than a head full of books on psychology, pedagogy, child study, and meth ods of discipline, good as they may be in their place. Book The Teacher and the School Or School Economy

Download or read book The Teacher and the School Or School Economy written by Edward T. Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and the School; Or School Economy: Outlines, Directions, and References; A Basis for Lectures, and Talks Given by the Principal to the Senior, Classes in the State Normal School, Los Angeles, California Young teachers need some definite instructions on School Management before they assume charge of schools. They may have a clear knowledge of the science of teaching, and utterly fail in their work if they do not know how to organize and manage a school. This knowledge cannot be gained in a Normal School. It is, therefore, the most difficult problem for the young teachers when they are first thrown on their own responsibility. These hints and directions are formulated principally from the experience of the author for nearly twenty-five years in the public schools of three States. They, in no sense, make a complete work on School Economy, but may, with the many references given, be of aid to teachers who have had little experience. Quotations have been freely taken from and references made to the following works: Education, George Combe; Principles and Practices of Teaching, Johonnot; Lectures on the Science and Art of Education, Payne; School Management, Gill; School Management, Landon; Philosophy of Education, Rosencranz; Education as a Science, Bain; Education, Spencer; Teacher and Parent, Northend; Methods of Teaching, Swett; School Economy, Wickersham; School Management, Raub; School Management, Baldwin; Philosophy of School Discipline, Kennedy; School Management, Holbrook; Methods of Teaching in Country Schools, Lind; Theory and Practice of Teaching, Page; School Amusements, Root; Principles of Education Practically Applied, Greenwood; Philosophy of Education, Tate; Theory and Practice of Teaching, Thring; School Management, Kellogg; Psychology Applied to Teaching, Mc-Lellan; Compayre's Psychology; Hewett's Psychology About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Teacher, Vol. 5: July, 1904-June, 1905 In this book the author proves that a science of education is possible, after the necessary emphasis is placed upon the functional or dynamic phase Of science. This educational science is quite independent, with a technique Of its own; its aims are formulated mainly upon an ethical basis. Its means upon a psychological basis. A strong plea is made for professional training of the teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher as He Should Be: An Address Delivered, July 8, 1891, Before the New York State Teachers Association, and With Slight Changes, July 21, 1891, Before the Chautauqua Assembly Suppose we apply the inductive method. Let us select four Of the recognized great teachers Of recent generations, and see what qualities they had in common. There will be no dispute as to whose name should head the list. With Thomas Arnold let us associate Edward Thring, Emma Willard, and Mark Hopkins. The eminence Of these teachers is established. I suppose if there were a vacant posi tion on the Institute corps Judge Draper would consider any one of them an eligible candidate. Language can go no farther. But when we apply to them our twenty-six adjectives we are perplexed. For one thing, none of them were great scholars. Edward Thring and Mark Hopkins were not even bookish in their tastes, but read marvellously little for men of their station.
