Book Contemporary Issues in Taxation Research

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Taxation Research written by Andy Lymer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon papers presented at the 10th Annual Conference of the Tax Research Network held at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in September 2000. The book covers four discrete areas namely compliance, e-commerce and taxation, international taxation and taxation within the European Union, and value added tax, and focuses within those areas on issues of topical and continuing interest. In an introductory chapter, the editors provide an overview of the subject matter of each of the substantive chapters (of which there are eleven). They conclude by seeking to extrapolate from those chapters, notwithstanding their diversity, various matters of wider and contemporary import to taxation. The treatment of the material in this book by scholars from various academic disciplines and with differing geographical perspectives also gives distinct and instructive insights into widely recognised and enduring taxation problems within the above-mentioned subject areas. Further, an appreciation and understanding of the multi-faceted approaches which may be adopted for problem solving, and which are evident in this book, can only enhance the prospects of the ultimate resolution of these problems.

Book Substance Abusing Inmates

Download or read book Substance Abusing Inmates written by Lior Gideon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a manner similar to asking an immigrant to describe his/her first few months, and even their first year, in the country they migrate to, asking released inmates how they reform their lives is the key to unlocking their individual Pandora Box. Anyone who ever went through the migration process experienced many of the same difficulties encountered by those who are released from incarceration and try to rehabilitate their life. There are more than nine million people imprisoned worldwide, and it is known that the majority of them will be released back to the community. Currently, in the United States there are about 700,000 people reentering society after serving time in state and federal prisons. These numbers are much higher for jail inmates who are estimated by the millions each year. Considering the fact that more than two thirds of offenders sentenced to jails and prisons have histories of substance abuse, reentry and reintegration practices become even more of a challenge. This book is a product of an original study that examined inmates who participated in a prison-based therapeutic community and were followed for up to seven years after their release. It will describe the challenges faced by rehabilitated addicts who were released from a prison-based therapeutic community and their journey to freedom; freedom from drugs and freedom from further involvement in criminal activity.

Book The United States and Peru

Download or read book The United States and Peru written by Cynthia McClintock and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 1990s were a critical turning point in the relationship between the United States and Peru, as historically contentious relations dramatically improved. During President Alber to Fujimori's rule, he sought to cooperate with the U.S. government on most issues, including security threats, free-market reform, and narcotics control. Fujimori's government did not meet international standards for democracy and human rights, but relations with the U.S. were more cooperative than they had been since the beginning of the Cold War. Why did the Clinton administration place a relatively low priority on democracy and human rights in Peru? The United States and Peru traces the changes in the relationship between the two countries from the 1980's through the 1990's, examining economic, political, and military issues. Attention is given to the problems of drug-trafficking, guerrillas, human-rights violations, and to the 1995 war between Peru and Ecuador and the U.S. role in the resolution of the conflict.

Download or read book India written by Germano Franceschin and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India, a Union of 28 States and 7 territories, with a population of over a billion people and multiple cultures and languages, is a democratic republic often called, quite rightly, ‘the largest democracy in the world’. Because the well-established English legal system endured after independence in 1947, India categorically remains a common law jurisdiction, and its legal practice and procedure is conducted almost exclusively in English. Nonetheless, Indian law is sufficiently complex in ways that are distinct from other European-based systems that a book such as this – in which the business legal system of India is thoroughly reviewed – will be really welcomed by both practitioners and academics. This book examines the full spectrum of India’s legal system as it applies to commercial, customs, and tax matters, and covers among much else such elements as the following: division of executive and legislative powers between the Union and the individual States; role of the Supreme Court and State high courts; role of State legislative assemblies; levels of appeals in judiciary system; power of specialised State tribunals in, for example, tax, company law, bankruptcy; power of the State to appropriate property; constitutional protection of culture and environment; use and citation of foreign judgments and jurisprudence; contract law; trusts; industrial relations; minimum wage law; income tax rules and procedure; bilateral double taxation agreements; copyright and trademark protection; semiconductor integrated circuits layout design; protection of plant varieties and farmers’ rights; competition law; multi-State cooperation agreements; and regulation of financial services. An extensive appendix supplies texts of the Constitution of India, the Indian Penal Code and 23 Legislative Acts pertaining to commercial, customs and tax matters. There is a sample franchise agreement, and an informative summary of current and projected foreign trade policy through 2014. Both as a guide to business lawyers working with Indian partners and as a comparative law treatment of the world’s second most populous country (and a rapidly growing economic powerhouse), this book has no peers.

Book The Political Economy of Corporation Tax

Download or read book The Political Economy of Corporation Tax written by John Snape and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excellent technical writing on corporation tax abounds, but it tends to be inaccessible to public lawyers, political theorists and political economists. Although recent years have seen not only an explosion in public law scholarship but also a reawakening of interest in interpretative political theory and political economy, the potential of these perspectives to illuminate the corporation tax debate has remained unexplored. In this important work, John Snape seeks to reconcile these disparate strands of scholarship and to contribute to a new way of understanding and conceptualising the reform of the law relating to corporate taxation. Drawing on important developments in public law scholarship, the study combines elements of political theory and political economy. It advances a new interpretation of corporation tax law as an instrument of rule, through the maximisation of a nation's economic potential. Snape shows how corporate taxation belongs at the centre of any discussion of economic globalisation, not only because of the potential of national tax systems to influence inward investment decisions but also because of the potential of those decisions to shape the public interest that those tax systems might embody. Following public law and politics models, the book looks afresh at the impact of Britain's political institutions, of the processes of its representative government and of the theory that moulds and orders the values that the corporation tax code contains. This is a timely exploration of cutting-edge issues of public policy.

Book After Crime and Punishment

Download or read book After Crime and Punishment written by Shadd Maruna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of resettling ex-prisoners and ex-offenders into the community has become an increasingly important one on both sides of the Atlantic. In the USA the former Attorney General Janet Reno identified the issue as 'one of the most pressing problems we face as a nation' in view of the massive prison population and the rapid increase in rates of incarceration, while in the UK it has become an increasingly important issue for similar reasons, and the subject of recent reports by HM Inspectorate of Prisons and HM Inspectorate of Probation, as well as from the Social Exclusion Unit of the Home Office. Yet this issue has not been well served by the criminological literature, and the new policies and programmes that have been set up to address the problem have not been well grounded in criminological thinking. This book seeks to address the important set of issues involved by bringing together the best of recent thinking and research into desistance from crime, drawing upon research in both the UK and the USA, and with a distinct focus on how this might impact upon the design and implementation of ex-offender reintegration policy.
