This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 4. Encompassing the whole milieu of early Islamic civilization, this major work of Western orientalism explores the meaning of the life and teaching of the tenth-century mystic and martyr, al-Hallaj. With profound spiritual insight and transcultural sympathy, Massignon, an Islamicist and scholar of religion, penetrates Islamic mysticism in a way that was previously unknown. Massignon traveled throughout the Middle East and western India to gather and authenticate al-Hallaj's surviving writings and the recorded facts. After assembling the extant verses and prose works of al-Hallaj and the accounts of his life and death, Massignon published La Passion d'al-Hallaj in 1922. At his death in 1962, he left behind a greatly expanded version, published as the second French edition (1975). It is edited and translated here from the French and the Arabic sources by Massignon's friend and pupil, Herbert Mason. Volume 1 gives an account of al-Hallaj's life and describes the wo rld in which he lives; volume 2 traces his influence in Islam over the centuries; volume 3 studies Hallajian thought; volume 4 contains a full biography and index. Each volume contains Massignon's copious notes and new translations of original Islamic documents. Herbert Mason is University Professor of Religion and Islamic History at Boston University. He is also apoet and novelist; his version of the Gigamesh epic was a nominee for the National Book Award in 1971. Bollingen Series XCVIII. Originally published in 1972. Download or read book Virgil s last dream of Aeneas and Homer written by Art Aeon and published by AEON PRESS, Halifax, NS, Canada. This book was released on with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virgil’s Last Dream of Aeneas and Homer by Art Aeon is a fictional narrative poem in the tercet stanza. It unfolds the imaginary dialogues between Augustus (63 BCE-14 CE), the first Roman emperor, and Varius Rufus (74-14 BCE), a literary executor of the great Roman poet, Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 BCE), known as Virgil. Varius reports Virgil’s untimely death to Augustus and reveals that he keeps Virgil’s unpublished manuscript of The Aeneid. At Augustus’s request, Varius relates a succinct gist of the first six books of The Aeneid and what Virgil told him at his death about his numinous last dream on how the spirit of Aeneas guided Virgil to Dis to meet with the spirit of Homer, and what they discussed on the epic poetry: In his dream, Virgil prayed to muse Calliope for inspiration to bring his Aeneid to a meaningful conclusion. Calliope suggested that Virgil invoke Aeneas to guide him for a supernatural adventure to meet Homer in Dis and ask for expert advice in improving his new epic. At Virgil’s sincere invocation, Aeneas’s spirit appeared to him. Eventually, Aeneas guided Virgil to the palace of the queen of the dead, Proserpina. In an impromptu symposium, held by Proserpina at the plea of Aeneas, Virgil met Homer-Meles, the author of The Iliad, and Homer-Outis, the author of The Odyssey. Virgil recited his Aeneid for his revered Greek poets. After their earnest and enlightening discussions, the Greek bards convinced Virgil that his Aeneid was as good as a human could achieve. Proserpina announced that Virgil’s visit to Dis was overdue; he should return to the world of the living. At that point, Virgil awakes from his numinous dream and finds his dear friend Varius, waiting by his bed. He realizes that the time has come for him to depart from this world to Dis. Virgil requests Varius to publish The Aeneid as it is and impart his dream of Aeneas and Homer to others. Then Virgil gently passes away in peace.
Download or read book Dream of the Walled City written by Lisa Huang Fleischman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marking the debut of a stunning new literary talent, Lisa Huang Fleischman's extraordinary saga -- inspired by her grandmother's life as an early feminist, political activist, and friend of Mao Zedong -- is a masterpiece about one clever and resourceful woman, growing up amidst the turmoil of twentieth-century China. Born in 1890, the privileged and sheltered daughter of a high-ranking imperial official, Jade Virtue spends her childhood enclosed by the towering walls of her family's sprawling mansion, never glimpsing the desperate struggle of China's ancient society, as the old ways are challenged and the twentieth century -- fast, fearsome, and tumultuous -- rushes in. But when her father mysteriously dies, young Jade Virtue is suddenly thrust into poverty, and experiences firsthand a traditional culture falling apart under the onslaught of growing rebellion against the Emperor, rapid social changes, and the mounting aggression of Japan and the West. Fleischman has rendered a richly textured, panoramic vision of Chinese life in the perilous years between the end of the empire and the Communist triumph of 1949, charting Jade Virtue's arranged first marriage to the corrupt opium addict Wang Mang, who harbors a terrible secret in his family's past; her awakening independence and ambivalent politics; her struggles with motherhood; and her fascinating acquaintance with a gifted, idealistic, fiercely ambitious young man named Mao Zedong. But the most important choices of her life are shaped by her conflicting loyalties, her intense lifelong friendship with Jinyu, a fiery woman revolutionary, and to Guai, a government official and sworn enemy of the Communists, with whom she finally discovers true and redemptive love. Exquisitely nuanced and lyrical yet marked with a driving power, Dream of the Walled City is an enthralling novel of hard-won personal independence set against the vivid backdrop of a rapidly changing world. From the final days of the last dynasty through the savage Japanese invasion during World War II to the formidable red dawn of the Communist triumph; from the backward rural province of Hunan to exile on the tropical shores of Taiwan; and from the binding chains of predetermined fate to the exhilarating liberation of a human spirit, this is a remarkable odyssey you will never forget.
