Book excerpt: In Kids These Days, early Wall Street occupier Malcolm Harris gets real about why the Millennial generation has been wrongly stereotyped, and dares us to confront and take charge of the consequences now that we are grown up. Millennials have been stereotyped as lazy, entitled, narcissistic, and immature. We've gotten so used to sloppy generational analysis filled with dumb clichés about young people that we've lost sight of what really unites Millennials. Namely: We are the most educated and hardworking generation in American history. We poured historic and insane amounts of time and money into preparing ourselves for the 21st-century labor market. We have been taught to consider working for free (homework, internships) a privilege for our own benefit. We are poorer, more medicated, and more precariously employed than our parents, grandparents, even our great grandparents, with less of a social safety net to boot. Kids These Days is about why. In brilliant, crackling prose, early Wall Street occupier Malcolm Harris gets mercilessly real about our maligned birth cohort. Examining trends like runaway student debt, the rise of the intern, mass incarceration, social media, and more, Harris gives us a portrait of what it means to be young in America today that will wake you up and piss you off. Millennials were the first generation raised explicitly as investments, Harris argues, and in Kids These Days he dares us to confront and take charge of the consequences now that we are grown up.

Book The Urgency of Now

Download or read book The Urgency of Now written by Angelicus-M. B. Onasanya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of nation building has enjoyed currency in the discourse about the general development of countries around the world. Its global importance could be discerned in two different areas; nation-building as applied to efforts aimed at rebuilding a country after a war as in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and so on; and nation-building with regard to efforts aimed at dealing with the sobering realities of failed or failing countries whose populations have been exploited, abused and mismanaged almost to the point of extinction. As can, and should be expected, Nigeria and Nigerians, at home and abroad, have not been exempt from these discourses especially in the past few years as the countrys nascent and fledging (?) democracy became embarrassingly threatened to the point of abortion within Nigeria and the international community of nations. In ones sober moments, the realisation that Nigeria is fast becoming another failed state procures rather scary thoughts.

Book Task Based Language Learning Insights from and for L2 Writing

Download or read book Task Based Language Learning Insights from and for L2 Writing written by Heidi Byrnes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book seeks to enlarge the theoretical scope, research agenda, and practices associated with TBLT in a two-way dynamic, by exploring how insights from writing might reconfigure our understanding of tasks and, in turn, how work associated with TBLT might benefit the learning and teaching of writing. In order to enrich the domain of task and to advance the educational interests of TBLT, it adopts both a psycholinguistic and a textual meaning-making orientation. Following an issues-oriented introductory chapter, Part I of the volume explores tenets, methods, and findings in task-oriented theory and research in the context of writing; the chapters in Part II present empirical findings on task-based writing by investigating how writing tasks are implemented, how writers differentially respond to tasks, and how tasks can contribute to language development. A coda chapter summarizes the volume’s contribution and suggests directions for advancing TBLT constructs and research agendas.

Book Multi Robot Task Allocation for Inspection Problems with Cooperative Tasks Using Hybrid Genetic Algorithms

Download or read book Multi Robot Task Allocation for Inspection Problems with Cooperative Tasks Using Hybrid Genetic Algorithms written by Liu, Chun and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, methods for optimal multi-robot task allocation (MRTA) for industrial plant inspection are investigated. MRTA involves distributing and scheduling a set of tasks for a group of robots to minimize the total cost taking into account operational constraints. With technical progress and declining cost of robotic mobility, interest in industrial mobile robotics has grown significantly in recent years. Many efforts have been devoted to mobility-related problems such as self-localization and mapping, though only few studies deal with the optimal task allocation in multi-robot systems. Since a good task allocation provides more efficient scheduling (e.g. less cost, shorter time), the objective of this research is to develop search/optimization methods for inspection problems that involve both single- and two-robot tasks.
