Book Water Bears The Biology of Tardigrades

Download or read book Water Bears The Biology of Tardigrades written by Ralph O. Schill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering extensive information on tardigrades, this volume begins with a chapter on the history of tardigrades, from the first description by Goeze in 1773, until 1929, when the most comprehensive monographic approach by E. Marcus was published. Tardigrades’ organ systems, including their integument, body cavity, digestive, muscular, nervous and reproductive systems, as well as their overall external morphology, are summarized in the second chapter. Subsequent chapters present the current state of knowledge on tardigrade phylogeny, biogeography, paleontology, cytology and cytogenetics. In addition, the book provides insights into the ecology of tardigrades in marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats. The reproduction, development and life cycles are summarized and the extraordinary environmental adaptations of encystment and cyclomorphosis, desiccation tolerance, freezing tolerance and radiation tolerance are discussed in detail. Further chapters provide an overview of key approaches in molecular tardigrade studies and describe techniques for sampling and sample processing. The book closes with a list of tardigrade taxa up to a sub-generic level, including the type species of each genus, the numbers of lower taxa in each taxon, and the main environments in which the taxa were found. Given its depth of coverage, the volume offers an invaluable resource for scientists from various disciplines who plan to research tardigrades, and for all others who are interested in these fascinating animals.

Book Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates

Download or read book Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates written by James H. Thorp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-11 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates has been immensely popular with students and researchers interested in freshwater biology and ecology, limnology, environmental science, invertebrate zoology, and related fields. The First Edition has been widely used as a textbook and this Second Edition should continue to serve students in advanced classes. The Second Edition features expanded and updated chapters, especially with respect to the cited references and the classification of North American freshwater invertebrates. New chapters or substantially revised chapters include those on freshwater ecosystems, snails, aquatic spiders, aquatic insects, and crustaceans. Most up-to-date and informative text of its kind Written by experts in the ecology of various invertebrate groups, coverage emphasizes ecological information within a current taxonomic framework Each chapter contains both morphological and taxonomic information, including keys to North American taxa (usually to the generic level) as well as bibliographic information and a list of further readings The text is geared toward researchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students

Book Biology of the Vestfold Hills Antarctica

Download or read book Biology of the Vestfold Hills Antarctica written by J.M. Ferris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume was conceived as a companion to 'Antarctic Oasis: Terrestrial environments and history of the Vestfold Hills' edited by J. Pickard and published in 1986 by Academic Press, Sydney. Pickard's book contains accounts of the Vestfold Hills' climate (N. A. Streten) and recent geomorphological history (D. A. Adamson & J. Pickard) which provide a valuable context for understanding their present day biology. Pickard also gives a history of human discovery and occupation of the Vest fold Hills. There is some overlap in the coverage, to the extent that both this volume and Pickard's book describe the terrestrial flora and fauna. The reader specifically interested in the terrestrial ecosystems of the Vestfold Hills should draw from both sources. Together, these works present a broad and descriptive account of the largest truly coastal antarctic oasis: a region that holds a unique variety of opportunities for future scientific investigation. There are several tasks I wish to accomplish here, apart from expressing my sincere thanks to the many people who have contributed to the completion of this volume. I wish to briefly introduce the Vestfolds and to list some of the features that, in my opinion, make them biologically varied, and unique in the context of other coastal ice-free areas. I wish to describe the phases of biological research in this region, including the directions that have been pursued since the 1984 symposium and to comment upon the future of the Vestfold Hills.

Book Dormancy in Aquatic Organisms Theory Human Use and Modeling

Download or read book Dormancy in Aquatic Organisms Theory Human Use and Modeling written by Victor R. Alekseev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume on dormancy in aquatic organisms. The book is divided into three parts whereby the first part is devoted to several groups of aquatic organisms which are under-studied in terms of the dormancy’s role in the life cycle. The second part looks at the use of dormancy phenomena in science and potential human applications. Furthermore, part 3 comprises of examples of using modeling in relation to dormancy phenomenon and it opens with a theoretical analysis of studies of biological information, including seasonal information. This work can be used as a text book for students as well as a manual for science and practice purposes in ecology, aquaculture, nature protection and space researches with regards to creating ecological life supporting systems and discovering extraterrestrial life on other planets with harsh environmental conditions.

Book Biomimetic Architecture and Its Role in Developing Sustainable Regenerative and Livable Cities

Download or read book Biomimetic Architecture and Its Role in Developing Sustainable Regenerative and Livable Cities written by Mohsen Aboulnaga and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on understanding biomimetic architecture and its role as a sustainable design tool. It presents the role of biomimicry in mitigation and adaptation to climate change and examines how biomimetic architecture can provide healthy solutions to limit the spread of COVID-19 in buildings and cities. Coverage includes global examples of biomimetic approaches and buildings, an evaluation of the performance of biomimicry applications in architecture to illustrate best practices, and an exploration of how nature can offer inspiration in building design to conserve resources and save energy use as well as curb carbon emissions – a reaffirmed goal of COP 26 and an outcome of Glasgow Climate Pact. Finally, the book presents guidelines to enhance urban areas and healthier spaces in buildings to meet COVID-19 social distance regulations and beyond. Examines global applications of biomimicry in architecture; Highlights the importance of biomimicry in driving livability in cities and buildings; Explores the role of biomimetic architecture in mitigating climate change. “The line of argument developed is highly relevant to the present, in addition to being original and pertinent to research on urban regeneration, especially in regard to the exploration of the use of biomimicry architecture in response to changing urban demands.” —Alessandra Battisti, Ph.D., Professor of Architecture, University of Rome La Sapienza-
