Download or read book The Tao of Raven written by Ernestine Hayes and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her first book, Blonde Indian, Ernestine Hayes powerfully recounted the story of returning to Juneau and to her Tlingit home after many years of wandering. The Tao of Raven takes up the next and, in some ways, less explored question: once the exile returns, then what? Using the story of Raven and the Box of Daylight (and relating it to Sun Tzu’s equally timeless Art of War) to deepen her narration and reflection, Hayes expresses an ongoing frustration and anger at the obstacles and prejudices still facing Alaska Natives in their own land, but also recounts her own story of attending and completing college in her fifties and becoming a professor and a writer. Hayes lyrically weaves together strands of memoir, contemplation, and fiction to articulate an Indigenous worldview in which all things are connected, in which intergenerational trauma creates many hardships but transformation is still possible. Now a grandmother and thinking very much of the generations who will come after her, Hayes speaks for herself but also has powerful things to say about the resilience and complications of her Native community.
Download or read book Blonde Indian written by Ernestine Hayes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring, the bear returns to the forest, the glacier returns to its source, and the salmon returns to the fresh water where it was spawned. Drawing on the special relationship that the Native people of southeastern Alaska have always had with nature, Blonde Indian is a story about returning. Told in eloquent layers that blend Native stories and metaphor with social and spiritual journeys, this enchanting memoir traces the author’s life from her difficult childhood growing up in the Tlingit community, through her adulthood, during which she lived for some time in Seattle and San Francisco, and eventually to her return home. Neither fully Native American nor Euro-American, Hayes encounters a unique sense of alienation from both her Native community and the dominant culture. We witness her struggles alongside other Tlingit men and women—many of whom never left their Native community but wrestle with their own challenges, including unemployment, prejudice, alcoholism, and poverty. The author’s personal journey, the symbolic stories of contemporary Natives, and the tales and legends that have circulated among the Tlingit people for centuries are all woven together, making Blonde Indian much more than the story of one woman’s life. Filled with anecdotes, descriptions, and histories that are unique to the Tlingit community, this book is a document of cultural heritage, a tribute to the Alaskan landscape, and a moving testament to how going back—in nature and in life—allows movement forward.

Download or read book Raven Tales written by Dennis Waller and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Tlingit and the Haida don't have myths; they are stories about our history” The Raven is as much a paradoxical creature as he is important in the myths of many native cultures. The central character of these stories, the Raven is considered the benevolent creator, filling the world with beauty and harmony, the master mind behind all that is good and looked upon with warm admiration. On the other hand, he is often viewed as a malevolent conniving, scheming trickster with self-gratification as his only goal. Including stories of the Raven eating the unsuspecting victim out of house and home or bidding someone to do his work, he is still the ultimate larger-than-life heroic figure within the myths. Whether it is creating animals or chasing down a woman to marry, one thing for sure, the Raven has left us with a rich and colorful history recorded in the myths and legends of the indigenous people. While the Raven appears throughout the world in mythology, our focus here will be centered on the Tlingit, Tsimshian, Haida, the Yupiit and Inupiat also known as the Eskimo, and the Athapascan Peoples of Alaska. What follows are 30 stories that seem to contradict each other adding to the confusion as to what or who this Raven really is. The cornerstone of this book is the Tlingit Creation Story which shows why the Raven is regarded as a grandfather to the people and is thought of with respect in asking for good health, good hunting, and for good fortune. It was the Raven that created man, the forest and the animals that inhabited them, the rivers and the fish that live in the water. In this context, the Raven is revered. However there are other stories that portray the Raven as a lazy scavenger, living off the hard work of others, or seeking sexual pleasure, the Raven is a shining example of how multi-faceted a myth can be. From being worship to being considered a lazy birdbrained (pardon the pun) imbecile, the Raven has most definitely left us with a fascinating collection of tales.

Download or read book The Way of the Tao Living an Authentic Life written by Dennis M. Waller and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treatise and interpretation of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching by Dennis M Waller. The Tao is an ancient philosophy of living in the natural world. It shows the way of how to get back to being your Authentic Self, your Spiritual Self. The Tao has the power to help you reclaim your life from the temporal ego identity that is imprisoning you. With the Tao you can discover your Authentic Identity by getting back to the being-ness and oneness of living in the Divine Consciousness. Through discovering these truths we can become the creators of the universe instead of the passive observers we have been. We can learn to live life in the infinity of the now verses living in the clutches of the Ego. The Tao shows us how to grow detached from the ego identity by becoming in direct contact with our true intent and motives that was meant for us. When we do, we begin to see ourselves as we truly are. It is being authentic that we become reconnected to the divine source. What is the Way of the Tao? It is the way things are in their own natural progression of life and death. The way of intelligent design as shown in nature, this is the way of the Tao. It is the way without dogmas, formalities or religion. To live in the Tao is to live in peace and harmony. The Tao gives you the knowledge of being one with the higher realm of divine consciousness and to experience the innerconnectiveness to all living things. It is to have the awareness of being in this world while knowing that you are not part of it because you are more than all of this. You are one and 10,000 things at the same moment. You are the song that the bird sings, the breeze blowing through the trees, the fish swimming in a brook, the warmth of the sun shining from above, the coolness of the earth below your feet, you are life and death, all at once and not at all. There is no separation in the Divine Oneness. The Tao contains the power to liberate you from the ego-imposed prison of the dualistic world. Living in the Tao can bring a deep inner peace and a reconnection to the divine source. The wisdom of the Tao is in a practical sense, a way to live life with the clarity of knowing the universal truth. When you are living in the Tao, you will see resistance and opposition fade away. Conflict and stress will become distant memories. The issues of life become irrelevant or will simply disappear once you start living your authentic self with the Tao. The Tao shows how to transcend all those insurmountable obstacles that the ego has created. There is another level of existence that is the real, true, genuine substance of who you are. This is the authentic self. The authentic self is the real you that can be found at your absolute core. It is the part of you not defined by your job, function, nationality, religion, race or role in life. It is the composite of all your skills, talents and wisdom. It is all of the things that are uniquely yours and need expression, rather than what you believe you are supposed to be and do. The choice we need to make is whether to trust in our own nature, to be of a pure heart and mind or to live in a world where we are trying to control everything. We have seen that going against our nature provides no comfort or satisfaction for our souls. For authentic satisfaction, for true peace, we must learn to realize who we are and where we came from. The truth is all around us. You can hear the voice of god in the laughter of children at play and in the songs of the birds. You can see God in all his glory throughout all of nature. It is all around us to see and experience. Remember you are part of this universe and here to experience it. Be your Authentic Self and be one with it all. To live in the Tao and live your purpose is to live life to the fullest.

Until Riley started to arouse in him something other than suspicion. Tao doesn't trust lone shifters, especially ones so guarded--and tempting. But the sexual tension between them is making them both come undone, and vulnerable to more than desire. All Tao wants is for Riley to stay with him and to trust him with the truth of her past. As Riley's mysteries come to light, so does a danger that threatens not only her life but the safety of the entire pack. For Tao, keeping Riley safe means keeping her close--forever--as his mate."--Page 4 of cover.
Download or read book Indebted to Change written by Stephen Falconer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The date, the time, the place are obscure, but of what we can be certain is that the Beggar Poet is in no position to call himself a "noble person" or a "superior man." He lives his life as would a mendicant writer or a solitary seeker--one who has tasted love, joy, and the depths of human despair. Like most of us, really. In fashioning his life to the changes of the I Ching, each of the sixty-four hexagrams, he is faced with challenges and riddles, thresholds to broach, subtle variations of insight from which, by living through them sincerely and with an unrelenting gaze, he can be said to be living an evolving revelation of consciousness. Anyone who has taken time to turn the pages of the I Ching will realize that as well as discovering uplifting and spiritually profound moments, there are those we truly fear and spend our lives trying to avoid. Instead of trying to maintain constantly a higher spiritual eminence--a perfect sense of proportion--we come to know by experience, if Heaven wills and for only brief interludes in an otherwise fulfilling life, its opposite, making our luminous spiritual flights all the more poignant and precious.

The sting of those words would stay with her all her life. Years later, after becoming a seasoned fighter for equality, she would deliver her own powerful message: one that helped change Alaska and the nation forever. In 1945, Peratrovich stood before the Alaska Territorial Legislative Session and gave a powerful speech about her childhood and her experiences being treated as a second-class citizen. Her heartfelt testimony led to the passing of the landmark Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act, America’s first civil rights legislation. Today, Alaska celebrates Elizabeth Peratrovich Day every February 16, and she will be honored on the gold one-dollar coin in 2020. Annie Boochever worked with Elizabeth’s eldest son, Roy Peratrovich Jr., to bring Elizabeth’s story to life in the first book written for young teens on this remarkable Alaska Native woman.

Download or read book Bury My Heart at Chuck E Cheese s written by Tiffany Midge and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is there no Native woman David Sedaris? Or Native Anne Lamott? Humor categories in publishing are packed with books by funny women and humorous sociocultural-political commentary—but no Native women. There are presumably more important concerns in Indian Country. More important than humor? Among the Diné/Navajo, a ceremony is held in honor of a baby’s first laugh. While the context is different, it nonetheless reminds us that laughter is precious, even sacred. Bury My Heart at Chuck E. Cheese’s is a powerful and compelling collection of Tiffany Midge’s musings on life, politics, and identity as a Native woman in America. Artfully blending sly humor, social commentary, and meditations on love and loss, Midge weaves short, stand-alone musings into a memoir that stares down colonialism while chastising hipsters for abusing pumpkin spice. She explains why she does not like pussy hats, mercilessly dismantles pretendians, and confesses her own struggles with white-bread privilege. Midge goes on to ponder Standing Rock, feminism, and a tweeting president, all while exploring her own complex identity and the loss of her mother. Employing humor as an act of resistance, these slices of life and matchless takes on urban-Indigenous identity disrupt the colonial narrative and provide commentary on popular culture, media, feminism, and the complications of identity, race, and politics.
