Book Shilappadikaram

Download or read book Shilappadikaram written by Ilango Adigal and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shilappadikaram or the Ankle Bracelet is one of the five major epics of Tamil literature. It was composed as a verse romance in Tamil by Ilango Adigal, a Jain prince who lived in the second century ad and was one of the most renowned classical poets of ancient India. Shilappadikaram is a tale of wonders and misfortunes, of hapless mortals and capricious deities, of magic and heroism in a bright but also cruel world in which the law of karma rules and where 'actions committed in past lives must always bear fruit'. Thus the peerless young Kovalan will leave his loyal wife Kannaki for the courtesan Madhavi and though he returns to her, still meets his death because of her ill-omened ankle bracelet. It has been called an epic and even a novel, but it is also a book of general education. Ilango packed his story with information: history merging into myth, religious rites, caste customs, military lore, descriptions of city or country life. And four cantos are little anthologies of the poetry of the period (seashore and mountain songs, hunters' and milkmaids' songs), thereby giving us a vivid picture of early Indian life in all its aspects.

Book excerpt: In classical Tamil, Senkonmai means Righteous Sceptre. In latter centuries it became senmai, or when shortened even further--sen. Kol is the wooden rod used by a shepherd to guide and protect his flock. Combine the two words, and senkol (a word in popular use) becomes the staff (sceptre) a king wields. It is the physical manifestation of austerity, purity, mercy, and truthfulness--the dharmic tenets that guided the rulers of ancient Tamilakam. The sceptre was not a symbol of lordship and power, as was commonly associated with the royal mace in other ancient cultures such as the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Persian, and even later-day monarchies. In ancient Tamilakam, kings were known as kovalan and kavalan, both terms used interchangeably. Kovalan is the wielder of the senkol. Kavalan is the servant-guardian. A kovalan, by his example, serves and guards and guides the state. If he fails in this duty, he must make good or if unable to rectify the error, he must pay a penalty. The price could be restitution, such as money to put matters right or some other favour that restores or compensates the damage or loss to the affected constituent, be it a person or an institution. In extreme cases, he must be prepared to forfeit his life. Honour, duty, and accountability demanded this of him. The senkol in the hands of the kovalan constantly reminded him he, as the wielder of the kol, was a mere kavalan, servant-guardian of the state. These obligations on the king were disseminated to the people by temple inscriptions, palm-leaf books, guru-sishyan (teacher-student) discourses, and history enacted through the medium of story-telling (oral tradition), visual arts (portraiture and sculpture), and performance arts (dance and drama). An early example of the kavalan's duty, responsibility, and accountability was expounded in Silapathikaram, the classic Tamil epic composed by Elango-Adigal (the venerable ascetic prince). He was a prince-turned-monk and brother of Senkuttuvan, the Cheran king. Song of the Ankle Rings is based on the Silapathikaram. The Pandyan King, Nedun-Cheliyan, wrongly condemns Kannagi's husband of stealing the queen's anklet, and puts him to death. When she learns of this atrocity, she confronts the king in open court and proves her husband's innocence. The righteous king, horrified by his negligence that had led to the irredeemable error, grabs his chest and cries, "Am I king? No, I am the thief." Distraught and ashamed of the gross injustice committed, he digs his fingers into his chest and dies--his heart having failed him. Panegyrists sang his praises thus: "The kavalan's injustice bent his senkol, yet the kovalan's death reinstated his dynasty's righteousness. Rejoice people, for the senkol stands upright again." Kannagi, arguably the first female protagonist in Tamil literature, is revered in India and the Tamil diaspora as an exemplary model for womanhood. There are temples and statues raised to her memory. Welcome! Hear Kannagi and her husband, Kovalan--his name is an irony in more ways than one--recount their stories in Song of the Ankle Rings.

Book A Tale of the Mistaken Anklet

Download or read book A Tale of the Mistaken Anklet written by Kalian Ethirasan and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tale of the Mistaken Anklet is a complete translation of the foremost of the Tamil epics, Silapathikaram written by the Saint-Prince Ilango Adigal in the second century CE. The original was written in the Tamil language, spoken in the southern most part of India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and other places where the Tamil Diaspora is spread out. This Tamil epic ic distinctly different from the epics in Sanskrit and other western languages. While the Epics in other languages employ a single form of poetry, Ilango Adigal has employed a number of different types of poetry. While other epics use only the verses Silapathikaram employs a combination of prose and poetry covering the three divisions of Tamil prose, music and drama. Story wise also silapathikaram is based on already existing popular folklore called, 'Kovalan Natakam' having ordinary citizens as hero and heroines, while the other epics have persons from the princely families as heroes and heroines..It covers all the five land divisions of the ancient Tamils namely, Kurinji (hills) Mullai (forest) Marutham (wet land ) Neithal (sea and the shore ) and Paalai (wasteland or Dry land) and the music and dance of these people. Kanal Vari having a fisherman motive , Vettuva vari , the song of the fighters from the waste lands, Aychiyar kuravai , music and dance of the shepherds of the forest and Kunrakkuravai , the song of the hill tribes and each of them having a single or combination of Tamil poetic forms. As the author is a Jain monk one can see the influence of number three or its multiples in the epic,as it covers three kingdoms, three capital cities , Three important characters and three divisions of Tamil and in all has thirty chapters , In spite of this in addition to the Jain teachings. it is easy to find the references to other Gods Thirumal, Murugan , Indra and Goddess Kali ( Kotravai) . However, the most significant content of the epic is its contribution to ancient Tamil music. " Silapathikaram throws a flood of light on the music of the ancient Tamils. The Arangetru Kathai and Aychiyar Kuravai give a mine of information relating to the music and dance of that period. It gives a vivid description of the dances of those days, dances performed to please the deities, qualification and equipment of dancers and dance masters, system of training, the instruments used as accompaniments, the qualification of the performers and details relating to the art dance, folk dance, individual dance and group dance etc.. The seven swaras likened to the 7 principal planets and the 12 swarasthanas to the 12 signs of the Zodiac. The ancient Tamils used a scale of 22 srutis. The terms Alaku and Mattirai were used as equivalent of Sruti."Most of the existing translations are in the verse form , where as ' The Tale of the Mistaken Anklet has been written in Modern English so that persons with an elementary knowledge in English can easily understand and appreciate the story. The two forewords ,the first by Professor P . Marudanayagam a former Head of the Department of English of Pondicherry University and the other by 'Kalaimamani' , 'Thamizhmamani' Dr Arimalam Padmanabhan add luster and luminescence to this translation each highlighting different aspects of the original and the significance of the translationThe book is aimed at the Tamil youth living abroad and in India who are unable to read and write in Tamil as well as English knowing people from other parts of India and the world keen to know about this most popular Tamil Epic,

Book Ritual and Mythological Sources of the Early Tamil Poetry

Download or read book Ritual and Mythological Sources of the Early Tamil Poetry written by A.M. Dubianski and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the origin of the early Tamil poetical canon, which constitutes a set of specific subjects, images, principles of arrangement of basic poetical themes which are called tiṇai. The author proceeds from the idea of a Russian scholar O. Freidenberg that literary forms ‘originate from anti-literary material rather than their own archetypes’. An outline of mythological concepts, prevalent in ancient Tamil culture, is presented, alongside main mythological figures - Murukaṉ, Māl, Cūr, Koṟṟavai, Vaḷḷi. A controversial notion of aṉanku, especially in its aspect of an inner female energy, is analyzed. In addition, the author explores the panegyric art of the Tamil kings’ singers, describing such singers and performers while discussing the idea of ritual character. The elements of five canonical tiṇai-themes of the akam poetry are examined, where the use of ethnological data suggests that the themes are based on some behaviour patterns which are meant to ensure a reliable control over the female energy. Finally, the text raises the problem of earlier poetic forms that consolidated the tiṇai system.

Every narrative, however, carries the imprint of the times it was released in. Kannagi through the Ages: From the Epic to the Dravidian Movement aims to understand the ways in which representations of Kannagi in the epic Silappatikaram differ in every new narrative. Looking at the portrayals of Kannagi in plays, commentaries and folk narratives, the book examines how representations of gender and culture have evolved over time. Focusing on the interrelationships between a text and a society as well as between society and the way it moulds the category of 'woman' at different times through symbols and icon, the author analyses the social, cultural and political processes that contributed to the emergence of Kannagi as an icon of Tamil culture and epitome of Tamil womanhood.
