Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With twenty-five stories, The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories provides a great introduction to the ironic, moving, and thought-provoking tales of Anton Chekhov. An average student, Chekhov reportedly learned far more from his gifted mother, whose compelling stories interested him in storytelling at an early age. Considered the "father" of the modern short story and the modern play, The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories includes early Chekhov stories of note including Oysters, Vanka and the lyrical A Day in the Country. Translator Constance Garnett was a contemporary of Chekhov's, and while her translations of other nineteenth-century Russian authors have sometimes been faulted, her carefully-chosen translations provide near-contemporary English versions of Chekhov's elegant language and incomparable imagery.

Translator Constance Garnett was a contemporary of Chekhov's, and while her translations of other nineteenth-century Russian authors have sometimes been faulted, her carefully-chosen translations provide near-contemporary English versions of Chekhov's elegant language and incomparable imagery.Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later adopted by James Joyce and other modernists, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories by Anton Chekhov Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a master of the short story. The son of a former serf in southern Russia, he attended Moscow University to study medicine, writing short stories for periodicals in order to support his family. What began as a necessity became a legitimate career in 1886 when he was asked to write in St. Petersburg for the Novoye Vremya (New Times), owned by millionaire magnate Alexey Suvorin. Chekhov began paying more attention to his writing, revising and developing his own principles and conceptions of truth, for a time coming under the influence of Leo Tolstoy. As a result of his widespread popularity, Chekhov amassed a vast collection of short stories displaying an early use of stream-of-consciousness writing, as well as his powerful ideas concerning the individual, the tedium of life, and the beauty nature and humanity. This edition contains "The Wife," "Difficult People," "The Grasshopper," "A Dreary Story," "The Privy Councilor," "A Man in a Case," "Gooseberries," "About Love,"

Book excerpt: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short-story writer who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. This captivating collection of short stories, selected from works written during Chekhov's prolific period, displays those qualities for which the Russian author and playwright is famous: a natural aptitude for detail, dialogue, humor, and compassion. When you want to read in both Russian and English, though, there's a great option: bilingual books!Reading bilingual books and inferring the vocabulary and grammar is a far superior method of language learning than traditional memorization. It is also much less painful.
