Book My Dead Pets Are Interesting

Download or read book My Dead Pets Are Interesting written by Lenore Zion and published by . This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lenore Zion takes readers on a journey down the rabbit hole of the human condition. It is beautiful. It is ugly. And it is brilliant." Tom Hansen, author of "American Junkie" "Zanily macabre, refreshingly irreverent, unimpeachably funny, Lenore Zion is living proof of Oscar Wilde's assertion that there are no dull subjects, only dull writers, because damn it, "her" dead pets "are" interesting." Greg Olear, author of "Fathermucker" and "Totally Killer" "Zion's fearless writing mirrors what's disgusting and great about the human condition." Tony DuShane, author of "Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk" "Reminiscent of David Sedaris' work in its wit, compassion, and honesty, but Zion's breathy, stream-of-consciousness confessional style is all her own. She reveals her most hilarious thoughts on topics ranging from face cancer to elder care." Summer Block "The most disquieting, surprisingly poignant and shockingly honest stories you will ever do yourself the favor of reading." Kimberly M. Wetherell, award-winning filmmaker "A really really funny book. I suspect a small camera has been installed in each copy, and every time we laugh, Zion is taking notes, plotting her next triumph..." Download or read book On Zion s Mount written by Jared Farmer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrouded in the lore of legendary Indians, Mt. Timpanogos beckons the urban populace of Utah. And yet, no “Indian” legend graced the mount until Mormon settlers conjured it—once they had displaced the local Indians, the Utes, from their actual landmark, Utah Lake. On Zion’s Mount tells the story of this curious shift. It is a quintessentially American story about the fraught process of making oneself “native” in a strange land. But it is also a complex tale of how cultures confer meaning on the environment—how they create homelands. Only in Utah did Euro-American settlers conceive of having a homeland in the Native American sense—an endemic spiritual geography. They called it “Zion.” Mormonism, a religion indigenous to the United States, originally embraced Indians as “Lamanites,” or spiritual kin. On Zion’s Mount shows how, paradoxically, the Mormons created their homeland at the expense of the local Indians—and how they expressed their sense of belonging by investing Timpanogos with “Indian” meaning. This same pattern was repeated across the United States. Jared Farmer reveals how settlers and their descendants (the new natives) bestowed “Indian” place names and recited pseudo-Indian legends about those places—cultural acts that still affect the way we think about American Indians and American landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unparalleled in history, the procession of Latter-Day Saints pushing handcarts from Iowa City and Florence (Omaha) to their promised Zion by the Great Salt Lake. Many of the three thousand hardy souls who trudged across thirteen hundred miles of prairie, desert, and mountain from 1856 to 1860 were European converts to the Mormon faith. Without funds for wagons and oxen, they carried their possessions in two-wheeled carts powered and aided by their own muscle and blood. Some of the weary travelers would finally be welcomed by their brethren in Salt Lake City; others would go to wayside graves or get caught in early winter storms in the Rockies and hope to be rescued by the parties sent out by Brigham Young. The migration is described in Handcarts to Zion, which draws on diaries and reports of the participants, rosters of the ten companies, and a collection of the songs sung on the trail and at "The Gathering." LeRoy R. Hafen and Ann W. Hafen dedicated the book to his mother, Mary Ann Hafen, who wrote about the long journey in Recollections of a Handcart Pioneer of 1860: A Woman’s Life on the Mormon Frontier, also a Bison Book.

Book Agnon s Tales of the Land of Israel

Download or read book Agnon s Tales of the Land of Israel written by Jeffrey Saks and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a result of the historic catastrophe in which Titus of Rome destroyed Jerusalem and Israel was exiled from its land, I was born in one of the cities of the Exile," S. Y. Agnon declared at the 1966 Nobel Prize ceremony. "But always I regarded myself as one who was born in Jerusalem." Agnon's act of literary imagination fueled his creative endeavor and is explored in these pages. Jerusalem and the Holy Land (to say nothing of the later State of Israel) are often two-faced in Agnon's Hebrew writing. Depending on which side of the lens one views Eretz Yisrael through, the vision of what can be achieved there appears clearer or more distorted. These themes wove themselves into the presentations at an international conference convened in 2016 by the Yeshiva University Center for Israel Studies in New York City, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Agnon's Nobel Prize. The essays from that conference, collected here, explore Zionism's aspirations and shortcomings and the yearning for the Land from afar from S. Y. Agnon's Galician hometown, which served as a symbol of Jewish longing worldwide. Contributing authors: Shulamith Z. Berger, Shalom Carmy, Zafrira Cohen Lidovsky, Steven Fine, Hillel Halkin, Avraham Holtz, Alan Mintz, Jeffrey Saks, Moshe Simkovich, Laura Wiseman, and Wendy Zierler
