Book Makers and Takers

Download or read book Makers and Takers written by Rana Foroohar and published by Currency. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Wall Street bad for Main Street America? "A well-told exploration of why our current economy is leaving too many behind." —The New York Times In looking at the forces that shaped the 2016 presidential election, one thing is clear: much of the population believes that our economic system is rigged to enrich the privileged elites at the expense of hard-working Americans. This is a belief held equally on both sides of political spectrum, and it seems only to be gaining momentum. A key reason, says Financial Times columnist Rana Foroohar, is the fact that Wall Street is no longer supporting Main Street businesses that create the jobs for the middle and working class. She draws on in-depth reporting and interviews at the highest rungs of business and government to show how the “financialization of America”—the phenomenon by which finance and its way of thinking have come to dominate every corner of business—is threatening the American Dream. Now updated with new material explaining how our corrupted financial system propelled Donald Trump to power, Makers and Takers explores the confluence of forces that has led American businesses to favor balance-sheet engineering over the actual kind, greed over growth, and short-term profits over putting people to work. From the cozy relationship between Wall Street and Washington, to a tax code designed to benefit wealthy individuals and corporations, to forty years of bad policy decisions, she shows why so many Americans have lost trust in the system, and why it matters urgently to us all. Through colorful stories of both “Takers,” those stifling job creation while lining their own pockets, and “Makers,” businesses serving the real economy, Foroohar shows how we can reverse these trends for a better path forward.

The mansion had many glass cases filled with stuffed animals. One night, they were asked to accompany two strange minders and the son of the owner’s butler, to help carry the spirits of the animals back to Africa, where a ceremony was to be held. On their way, their craft was attacked by some evil aliens called jungoes, who were after the spirits. They were forced to take a short-cut through a world called ‘The Outer Reaches.’ On arrival, they found that the world had been taken over by the jungoes, who had built an electro-magnetic shield around the world to stop everyone entering or leaving, plus a plant, designed to change the atmosphere to a gas, which would kill all the creatures. After many adventures, they escape, with a promise to return and reach the ceremony site. They return later, together with volunteers, to rid the world of the jungoes and destroy both the shield and the gas plant. Upon returning to earth, Sammy was attacked by a jungo. This added a potentially horrific twist to the story.

Book The Keys of Power

Download or read book The Keys of Power written by J. Abbott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1932, demonstrates how the control of certain ‘-isms’ has for long moulded the interpretation of Indian belief and ritual by Western writers particularly. In every chapter there is some new coordination, often iconoclastic of then-accepted theory, whilst the new wealth of customs carefully recorded is astonishing. Long disputed problems such as that of the Maratha ‘devak’, or that of the ceremonial sowing of seedlings known to Western scholars as the ‘gardens of Adonis’, have at last been settled through careful research.

They were known as Life Diamonds--rough uncut diamonds of high quality bought by Jews in Eastern Europe to use as passports to safety. After 1939 and the Nazi blitzkrieg, after the extermination camps began belching black smoke into the skies and the railroad station at Auschwitz II-Birkenau became the busiest train station in the world, they became Death Diamonds. Blood from a Stone is the amazing story of forty of those diamonds, of their journey across continents and oceans, from the mines of South Africa to the diamond centers in Antwerp and Amsterdam, to the Jews of Eastern Europe, to the Death Camps. . . and to the two American soldiers who liberated them from the SS, finally, and buried them in a forest in Alsace on the border between France and Germany. It is the story of the curse believed to lie over the fabulous wealth of these stones, bringing death and disaster to all who touched them. It is the story of Yaron Svoray, who spent more than a decade in search of one small foxhole somewhere in a thousand square miles of forest...and of his unbelievable success. Blood from a Stone is a unique story, a story unlike any to come out of World War II. Blood from a Stone will more than over a dozen exclusive photos from the two-hour History Channel documentary.

Book Boots of Leather Slippers of Gold

Download or read book Boots of Leather Slippers of Gold written by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most lesbians had to hide, how did they find one another? Were the bars of the 1940s and 1950s more fun than the bars today? Did Black and white lesbians socialize together? Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold is a ground-breaking account of the growth of the lesbian community in Buffalo, New York from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s Drawing on oral histories collected from 45 women, it is the first comprehensive history of a working-class lesbian community. These poignant and complex stories provide a new look at Black and white working-class lesbians as powerful agents of historical change. Their creativity and resilience under oppressive circumstances constructed a better life for all lesbians and expanded possibilities for all women. Based on 13 years of research, Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold ranges over topics including sex, relationships, coming out, butch-fem roles, motherhood, aging, racism, work, oppression, and pride. Kennedy and Davis provide a unique insider's perspective on butch-fem culture and trace the roots of gay and lesbian liberation to the determined resistance of working-class lesbians. The book begins by focusing on the growth and development of community, culture, and consciousness in the bars and open house parties of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. It goes on to explore the code of personal behavior and social imperative in butch-fem culture, centering on dress, mannerisms, and gendered sexuality. Finally the book examines serial monogamy, the social forces which shaped love and break-ups, and the changing nature and content of lesbian identity. Capturing the full complexity of lesbian culture, this outstanding book includes extensive quotes from narrators that make every topic a living document, a composite picture of the lives of real people fighting for respect and for a place that would be safe for their love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of five, Manuel Donoso rode a wooden horse and pretended he was a cowboy. Two years later, he saddled a real horse and became a real “cowboy”. As a teenager, he found himself conscripted into the Chilean Army. While there, he experienced many abuses of power. The witnessing of the crushing of an aspiring young soldier’s military dreams was the final straw. This drove him to persuade the country’s president, Eduardo Frei Montalva, to arrange for his discharge. Not satisfied with being a dreamer in Chile’s Central Valley, he travelled from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere. Journeying through the Amazon, he marveled at the exotic creatures, was intrigued at the mysterious colours of the Amazon River, yet was horrified by the brutality of man he experienced along the way. While penniless in Central America, yet wanting to get to the United States, he became a dreamer again. He and a group of young friends put together a crazy form of transportation that worked, just not the way they expected. Eventually, he made it to Canada the easy way—by plane. In his new home he met the girl of his dreams. She was so nice, he actually married her twice! Then he wrote his entire improbable story in a book and called it “A Risk Taker’s Journey”. What a life! What a story! You’ve got to read it.
