Book Higher Education Systems Redesigned

Download or read book Higher Education Systems Redesigned written by Jonathan S. Gagliardi and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long an afterthought of the American higher education ecosystem, multi-campus systems have become more important than ever. In recent years, leading higher education systems have engaged in transforming the way they work, scaling best practices, leveraging data and analytics, and creating platforms to optimize and personalize these systems for increasingly diverse students. In Higher Education Systems Redesigned, leaders of these efforts share their insights into "systemness" and how to facilitate sustainable change in a system setting while navigating and leveraging tensions between campus and system priorities. Highlighting examples of successful realignment of these priorities with a focus on contextualized design and implementation, the book charts a shift in the aim of systems. Rather than perpetuating existing norms as they have traditionally done, systems are taking measures to spark innovation across campuses and use evidence-based practices to foster student access and completion rates, better serve communities, and drive social mobility and economic growth. Each chapter concludes with a list of takeaways to guide other system leaders and administrators. One of the few recent examinations of higher education systems, Higher Education Systems Redesigned offers a theoretical and practical framework for how systems can continually evolve.

Download or read book Saving Alma Mater written by James C. Garland and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s public universities educate 80% of our nation’s college students. But in the wake of rising demands on state treasuries, changing demographics, growing income inequality, and legislative indifference, many of these institutions have fallen into decline. Tuition costs have skyrocketed, class sizes have gone up, the number of courses offered has gone down, and the overall quality of education has decreased significantly. Here James C. Garland draws on more than thirty years of experience as a professor, administrator, and university president to argue that a new compact between state government and public universities is needed to make these schools more affordable and financially secure. Saving Alma Mater challenges a change-resistant culture in academia that places too low a premium on efficiency and productivity. Seeing a crisis of campus leadership, Garland takes state legislators to task for perpetuating the decay of their public university systems and calls for reforms in the way university presidents and governing boards are selected. He concludes that the era is long past when state appropriations can enable public universities to keep their fees low and affordable. Saving Alma Mater thus calls for the partial deregulation of public universities and a phase-out of their state appropriations. Garland’s plan would tie university revenues to their performance and exploit the competitive pressures of the academic marketplace to control costs, rein in tuition, and make schools more responsive to student needs. A much-needed blueprint for reform based on Garland’s real-life successes as the head of Miami University of Ohio, Saving Alma Mater will be essential for anyone concerned with the costs and quality of higher education in America today.

Book System wide Safety Improvements

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to safety engineers, highway planners, and others concerned with the procedures used by states to plan and program safety improvements. Information is presented on current practice of states in using system-wide improvements to provide safety consistency. The primary purpose of system-wide safety improvements is to increase safety by improving roadway consistency - to minimize violations of driver expectancy and to avoid or reduce injury and damage that occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the system-wide and spot approaches to safety improvement, explains strategies and programs for system-wide improvements, and gives general guidelines for a program of improving roadway consistency through system-wide safety improvements.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Cundill History Prize Winner of the Frederick Douglass Book Prize Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR A breathtakingly original work of history that uncovers a massive enslaved persons' revolt that almost changed the face of the Americas Named one of the best books of the year by NPR, Blood on the River also won two of the highest honors for works of history, capturing both the Frederick Douglass Prize and the Cundill History Prize in 2021. A book with profound relevance for our own time, Blood on the River “fundamentally alters what we know about revolutionary change” according to Cundill Prize juror and NYU history professor Jennifer Morgan. Nearly two hundred sixty years ago, on Sunday, February 27, 1763, thousands of slaves in the Dutch colony of Berbice—in present-day Guyana—launched a rebellion that came amazingly close to succeeding. Blood on the River is the explosive story of this little-known revolution, one that almost changed the face of the Americas. Michael Ignatieff, chair of the Cundill Prize jury, declared that Blood on the River “tells a story so dramatic, so compelling that no reader will be able to put the book down.” Drawing on nine hundred interrogation transcripts collected by the Dutch when the rebellion collapsed, and which were subsequently buried in Dutch archives, historian Marjoleine Kars has constructed what Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Eric Foner calls “a gripping narrative that brings to life a forgotten world.”
