Book Radical Reform in Irish Schools 1900 1922

Download or read book Radical Reform in Irish Schools 1900 1922 written by Teresa O'Doherty and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the radical reform that occurred during the final two decades of British rule in Ireland when William Starkie (1860–1920) presided as Resident Commissioner for the Board. Following the lead of industrialized nations, Irish members of parliament sought to encourage the establishment of a state-funded school system during the early nineteenth century. The year 1831 saw the creation of the Irish National School System. Central to its workings was the National Board of Education which had the responsibility for distributing government funds to aid in the building of schools, the payment of inspectors and teachers, the publication of textbooks, and the cost of teacher training. In the midst of radical political and cultural change within Ireland, visionaries and leaders like Starkie filled an indispensable role in Irish education. They oversaw the introduction of a radical child-centered primary school curriculum, often referred to as the ‘new education’. Filling a gap in Irish history, this book provides a much needed overview of the changes that occurred in primary education during the 22 years leading up to Ireland’s independence.

Book The System of National Education in Ireland Its Principle and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The System of National Education in Ireland Its Principle and Practice Classic Reprint written by J. C. Colquhoun and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System of National Education in Ireland, Its Principle and Practice The object of these pages may be briefly stated. It is not, I entreat the public to understand, the exposure of Mr. Carlile, or of any of the Commissioners of the Board of National Education. That object would never have induced me to take up the pen. The conduct of the Commissioners is a matter quite incidental to the question, and on which, if I could have avoided it, I should have been glad to pronounce no opinion. My object was the exposure of the system, and of that system the Commissioners form but a small part. The evil lies in the machine, not in the men who work it. They of course become implicated by their position, but if they were changed again and again, the mischief would remain unmitigated. That evil lies in uniting together men of opposite religious opinions, and committing to them the superintendence of popular education. That is the inherent vice of the system, and wherever that vice is repeated, the same results will appear. It is all the more necessary to bring this before the public at the present time, that an attempt is made to infuse the venom of this system both into England and Scotland. A struggle has commenced; and with the same party, a struggle to establish Liberalism in education. Liberalism in religion (or the Voluntary System), has for some years been obtruded upon us. Liberalism in education is now thrust on our notice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
