Book excerpt: Chelsea is part of an international team of archaeologists who are making the most of a tenuous cease-fire in the Syrian civil war to excavate and conserve the historic remains of the ancient kingdom of Ebla. The dramatic discovery of a new library of clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform writing brings to the surface international tensions between Syria and Israel. Do the ancient tablets make reference to the ancient Jewish patriarchs living in Israel, or not? Chelsea finds herself caught in the middle of an international tug-of-war. Tensions increase when a small boy finds some tablets inscribed with two types of cuneiform writing that will enable archaeologists to translate the rest of the tablets. The boy and the tablets become the target of international interest. Chelsea must enlist the help of a shadowy character, Tony, for help. He has military training, but is now seeking a new life, one that will allow him to deal with his own demons. She must also call on the help of her colleague in the British Museum, Beanie, who is an IT genius. Chelsea must keep those she loves alive in an international squabble over who can rightfully lay claim to being the original and rightful occupants of Israel-and manage the greatest archaeological discovery of the century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syrian Stone-Lore: Or the Monumental History of Palestine The following chapters are meant to give a general idea Of the present state Of our information concerning the ancient condition Of a country which possesses peculiar interest as being the Holy Land Of the Jew, the Christian, and the Moslem alike. The limits of the country under consideration are the peninsula of Sinai on the south, and the Taurus Chain on the north, the Mediterranean on the west, and the desert on the east. It is clear, however, that the influence of surrounding nations in Egypt, Chaldea, and Asia Minor must always have been strongly felt in the long narrow line of sea-coast, generally known by the name of Syria towards the north and Of Palestine to the south; and it is intended in these pages to Show not only what can be gathered from the antiquities Of Syria itself concerning its ancient condition, but also how much light can now be obtained for the same purpose from the monumental remains of surrounding nations. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a small, makeshift library in the town of Daraya, and the people who found hope and humanity in its books during a four-year siege. Daraya lies on the fringe of Damascus, just southwest of the Syrian capital. Yet for four years it lived in another world. Besieged by government forces early in the Syrian Civil War, its people were deprived of food, bombarded by heavy artillery, and under the constant fire of snipers. But deep beneath this scene of frightening devastation lay a hidden library. While the streets above echoed with shelling and rifle fire, the secret world below was a haven of books. Long rows of well-thumbed volumes lined almost every wall: bloated editions with grand leather covers, pocket-sized guides to Syrian poetry, and no-nonsense reference books, all arranged in well-ordered lines. But this precious horde was not bought from publishers or loaned by other libraries--they were the books salvaged and scavenged at great personal risk from the doomed city above. The story of this extraordinary place and the people who found purpose and refuge in it is one of hope, human resilience, and above all, the timeless, universal love of literature and the compassion and wisdom it fosters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first book to present a comprehensive review of the archaeology of Syria from the end of the Paleolithic period to 300 BC. Syria has become a prime focus of field archaeology in the Middle East in the past thirty years, and Peter Akkermans and Glenn Schwartz discuss the results of this intensive fieldwork, integrating them with earlier research. Alongside the major material culture types of each period, they examine important contributions of Syrian archaeology to issues like the onset of agriculture, the emergence of private property and social inequality, the rise and collapse of urban life, and the archaeology of early empires. All competing interpretations are set out and considered, alongside the authors' own perspectives and conclusions.

Book Early Urbanism on the Syrian Euphrates

Download or read book Early Urbanism on the Syrian Euphrates written by Lisa Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying archaeological evidence from sites covering over 200 kilometres of the banks of the Euphrates River, Lisa Cooper's excellent monograph explores the growth and development of human settlement in the Euphrates River Valley of Northern Syria during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages from circa 2700 to 1550 BC. Cooper focuses on the nature and development of the urban politics that existed in the area during these periods and highlights two principal inter-related characteristics of the Euphrates Valley: the study of specific aspects of Euphrates culture, such as the nature of urban secular and religious architecture, mortuary remains, and subsistence pursuits, to underline the unique character of this region during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages the striking resilience of its cultural traditions over many centuries despite the political instability and environmental degradation. Including studies on the tribal background of the populations, the economy, the unique geography of the Euphrates, the ethnic and social structure of its inhabitants, and the influences of states surrounding it, this is a unique and invaluable resource for all students of archaeology and ancient history.
