Download or read book Principles of Organic Synthesis written by Richard O.C. Norman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for those who have had no more than a brief introduction to organic chemistry and who require a broad understanding of the subject. The book is in two parts. In Part I, reaction mechanism is set in its wider context of the basic principles and concepts that underlie chemical reactions: chemical thermodynamics, structural theory, theories of reaction kinetics, mechanism itself and stereochemistry. In Part II these principles and concepts are applied to the formation of particular types of bonds, groupings, and compounds. The final chapter in Part II describes the planning and detailed execution of the multi-step syntheses of several complex, naturally occurring compounds.

Chapters cover acyclic molecules, cyclic molecules, the stereochemistry of organic reactions, the perturbation molecular orbital theory for the origin of stereoelectronic effects, and an introduction to the principles of stereoselectivity and hierarchical levels of asymmetric synthesis. Each chapter includes problems that reinforce main themes, making it valuable to students, teachers and researchers working in organic, biological and medicinal chemistry, as well as biologists, pharmacologists, polymer chemists and chemists. - Presents a holistic and unified approach to stereochemical understanding and predictions, covering reactions of all mechanistic classes - Includes two background chapters on perturbation theory and stereoselective principles, along with asymmetric designs - Features novel rules and mnemonics to delineate product stereochemistry - Includes up-to-date coverage with over 1300 selective references
Download or read book Diffuse X Ray Scattering and Models of Disorder written by Thomas Richard Welberry and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffuse X-ray scattering is a rich (virtually untapped) source of local structural information over and above that obtained by conventional crystallography. The book aims to show how computer simulation of a model crystal provides a general method by which diffuse scattering of all kinds and from all types of materials can be interpreted and analysed.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Molecular Virology written by Nicholas H. Acheson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, fully revised second edition of Fundamentals of Molecular Virology is designed for university students learning about virology at the undergraduate or graduate level. Chapters cover most of the major virus families, emphasizing the unique features of each virus family. These chapters are designed to tell stories about the viruses covered, and include information on discovery, diseases and pathogenesis, virus structure, steps in viral replication, and interaction with cellular signaling pathways. This approach portrays the “personality” of each virus, helping students to learn the material and to build up their knowledge of virology, starting with smaller and simpler viruses and proceeding to more complex viruses.

Download or read book Principles of Molecular Recognition written by A.D. Buckingham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of molecular recognition in chemistry and biology is reflected in a recent upsurge in relevant research, promoted in particular by high-profile initiatives in this area in Europe, the USA and Japan. Although molecular recognition is necessarily microscopic in origin, its consequences are de facto macroscopic. Accordingly, a text that starts with intermolecular interactions between simple molecules and builds to a discussion of molecular recognition involving larger scale systems is timely. This book was planned with such a development in mind. The book begins with an elementary but rigorous account of the various types of forces between molecules. Chapter 2 is concerned with the hydrogen bond between pairs of simple molecules in the gas phase, with particular reference to the preferred relative orientation of the pair and the ease with which this can be distorted. This microscopic view continues in chapter 3 wherein the nature of interactions between solute molecules and solvents or between two or more solutes is examined from the experimental standpoint, with various types of spectroscopy providing the probe of the nature of the interactions. Molecular recognition is central to the catalysis of chemical reactions, especially when bonds are to be broken and formed under the severe con straint that a specific configuration is to result, as in the production of enan tiotopically pure compounds. This important topic is considered in chapter 4.
